The Weekend is here and these are best 5 bars in Nairobi. Not according to Ghafla but according to CNN
The weekend is upon us! A time to relax, chill and get lit for the young cats in Nairobi. In that regard we will be making our way to our favourite waterholes(if you are not there yet) to wash away all the January blues while dancing away all our money problems- I bet you have many.
I’m here to spruce it up for you and today we’ll be talking about some of the best bars to frequent in Nairobi (hold up, B-Club is not in the list) which are up-beat, with a cool selection of people and drinks. Sadly they are only 5 and they consist of a list compiled by Joe Yogerst who is a CNN reporter.
I suggest we get to it:
The first bar on his list is Choices bar along Baricho road. We all know Choices right? It’s basically the place where every afro fusion artist in Nairobi was born and bred. Live acts from around Kenya take the stage every Thursday, while Mondays are devoted to relaxation and conversation, Wednesdays to soul music, and the weekends to DJ parties not to forget live Premier League matches.
The second best bar in Nairobi is Hemingways Lounge bar which is located at the luxurious Hemingways hotel. Well, I know little about the place so I will just follow Joe’s lead on this one. He describes it as a chilled out place with a chummy atmosphere similar to the Muthaiga Country Club and other colonial holdovers. It’s also one of Nairobi’s best wine cellars and boasts a large selection of South African, South American, European and Californian vintages.
Then there is the Alchemist bar in Westlands which I must attest is one of the coolest places in Nairobi right now. Co-owned by Mitchelle Morgan and her Expatriate boyfriend Peng Chen, it blends together drinks, music, fashion, food and art in an eclectic outdoor space that feels more like an open-air fair that a traditional nightclub.
There is also Sierra Brewery at Yaya Centre which serves in house German beer — made with just hops, malt, yeast and water strictly following the centuries-old Reinheitsgebot tradition of Teutonic brewing.
The Brasserie gastropub situated on the third floor of Galleria mall also serves lunch and dinner making it just the best place to wind down a Saturday night.
There is also Champagne & Fishbowls at Seven Seafood & Grill restaurant, ABC along Waiyaki Way which is specially known for marine-themed drinks like the bright red Piranha and a tequila-beer concoction called seven’s Tsunami. If you are into that kind of stuff that is.
Lastly there is The Champagne Bar a posh place on the seventh floor of the Sankara design hotel in Westlands, an intimate space with sofa seating around low tables and a few stools along a gorgeous palm wood bar hand-carved by local artist and furniture maestro Marc van Rampelberg. Joe suggests you order a bottle of Krug or Taittinger and drink your bubbly straight up or ask the resident mixologist for one of his latest takes on the champagne cocktail.
