Phiona Mutesi leads Her University to Chess Victory
For Phiona Mutesi, it is in the blood. Not even fame can take away the fact that she is a chess champion. She is referred to as the “College Chess Star” at her University, NorthWest. Towards the end of last year, she led her Chess Team into winning a trophy in the Top Small College Team category.
Phiona Mutesi, whose life story was behind the Disney movie, “Queen of Katwe” is just a first year at American, NorthWest University. She has however already managed to turn heads, together with her colleague, and fellow freshman, Ben Mukumbya.
A tweet from Deborah Malac, US Ambassador to Uganda indicates that indeed this champion has made the country proud. She wrote;

TEAMS NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY BEAT TO WIN
From our sources, we learn that Phiona’s University managed to get the trophy with a 4-0 win against previous champion, Oberlin College. The later had won the said trophy for the previous four years. The University had played other teams to win the Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championships. Some of these are; Columbia University, Arizona State University, Tecnológico Nacional de México, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Oberlin College, and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. They finally emerged successful.
