HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ACHOLI CULTURAL FESTIVAL
Kaunda grounds and Pece Stadium in Gulu district was last weekend flooded with a number of people from all over the country. All of these collected together in solidarity to celebrate the first ever mega Acholi Cultural Festival.
The Acholi are a group of people who cover the Northern part of Uganda, and this festival was organized to celebrate the richness of their culture and dances. The theme for the Acholi Cultural Festival, was “Kwero deyo pa Acholi” , meaning, celebrating the Acholi Glory.
A number of people attended this “Ker Kwaro”, and many watched in amazement as the Acholi people displayed their tradition in a number of ways. The President of Uganda was a guest, and he officiated the launch of the “Aduku Pa Rwot” which in English means, The basket of the Chief. From what we know, it contained a total of 20 million Uganda Shillings.
The Acholi are also called a warrior tribe, and many of their food, music, dance and artifacts were displayed at this festival. They occupy the areas of Agago, Kitgum, Pader, Lamwo, Gulu, Amuru, Nwoya and Omoro districts.
The Acholi tribe has survived over 20 years of instability and insurgency. The festival gave them a platform to celebrate their glory, strength and rebirth.
From what we hear, the Annual Festival will me made an annual event, that will attract thousands of people and tourists from all over the country.
