Yesterday evening Adjumani was a ghost Town. The shops were closed, the streets empty, and different people peeped from the corners of their homes. One could feel the sorrow and rage in people’s hearts, just by standing in the middle of the streets. Many had been killed. Innocent people had been murdered in a Scuffle Between Angry Mob and Police.
THE CAUSE
It all started when the police fired a stray bullet that killed the Vice President of the Adjumani District Bodaboda committee. The issues under which this happened was involving a thief. Our sources say that a suspect that stole a Boda boda, and the riders wanted to lynch him. During the intervention and attempt by police to disperse the crowd, the bullet was fired.
This sparket riots among the people of the town, and they managed to take over one gun from a policeman. In this scuffle, a police was also shot down, to death, and one other innocent person who was at the balcony of the house.
The deceased were named as Police Constable Hannington Mwesimire, Michael Anyama, and Ben Opala. The angry mob went as far as setting a grass thatched hut, “Tukulu” ablaze. They went around and threatened to burn the Police Station down. The mob further set a motorcycle and vehicle on fire. The day ended with a UPDF vehicle strolling through and monitoring the streets of the town, with only it’s siren being heard in the middle of the night.
May the souls of the deceased rest in Peace. Let us hope that all this is put behind us, as we fight the various conflicts and preach peaceful co-existenec in the refugee settlement of the district.
