This Is The Touching Story Behind Radio Maisha’s Noisy Sports Commentator Stephen Mukangai

He is known as one of the noisiest and most entertaining sports commentators on radio but behind the funny and captivating voice lies a man who has gone through thick and thin to become one of the country’s finest radio personalities.

Stephen Mukangai is so familiar a name for sports lovers and specifically football enthusiasts in Kenya. He is always there to give you the most captivating football commentaries every weekend, from Nyayo National stadium in Nairobi to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in England.

Famously known for his sharp, high-pitched voice, ‘go go go go gooooaaaaaaaaal…’ which has become his mantra, Mukangai complements the ever entertaining Hassan Ali as they keep fans up to date with the happenings in the world of sports.

But who is Mukangai, and what as he gone through to become what he is today?

His story is a catchy one. Mukangai lived in Kibera as a hustler doing mjengo where he earned Kshs. 700 a week and later moved to Limuru for greener pastures. Here, he worked in a flower company as a greenhouse cleaner.

Mukangai worked hard and saved some cash from his derisory earnings which he later used to join the Kenya College of Communication. It was here that Mukangai met comedian Jalang’o who spotted his talent and took him to Radio Africa where Radio Maisha poached him from.

Mukangai made his debut at Radio Maisha when he commentated the game between Ulinzi Stars and Red Berets in the Kenyan premier league. Who doesn’t remember this day? I vividly do.

A year later, Mukangai would be voted the best radio sports reporter alongside his mentor Ali Hassan and since then he has gone from strength to strength.

The commentator hosts Dozi Dozi za Barclays Premier League on Radio Maisha breakfast show and Dozi Dozi za Utesi Gani on KTN, shows which are trending on social media.

It is justified to say that Mukangi is among the reasons why anyone would want to tune in to Radio Maisha.

He is a living testimony that people go a long way to greater heights.
