The 7 year old boy has been nicknamed ‘mask boy’ because of the rare birth defect he suffers from which makes him look like he has two faces.
A Chinese baby born with a rare birth defect called transverse facial cleft has caught the attention of people across the globe.
Baby Huikang, born to a humble family of farmers in southern China’s Hunan Province, has two huge gaps appearing from both sides of his mouth leading towards his ears.
Huikang’s mother, Yi Lianxi, told the media that she had three ultrasound scans and one Doppler ultrasound scan during her pregnancy but no deformation was detected.
She also revealed her family was teased and looked down upon by their neighbors for the boy’s unusual appearance; some even suggested they should throw away the child.
Media reports about Hukang’s condition saw well-wishers send their contributions to cater for mask boy’s reconstructive surgery.
Hukang has undergone two successful surgeries but doctors say he would need to wait for about 10 years to see if his facial bones would grow in a normal way.
