Of Magic Behind the Lens
Rohan’s journey began at the age of six when photography was just a fun hobby. Fast-forward to today, and it’s more than that – it’s his way of telling stories, preserving nature, and inspiring others.
The prodigy begun this journey under the wings of his teacher and mentor, Jeffrey Wu – a renowned Canadian wildlife photographer and Kenya Tourism Board brand partner.
Wu has also previously appeared on the Nikon Contest judge panel.
Rohan Shan admits learning the art from the legend has played a crucial role in shaping his craft over the past three years.
Beyond photography, Rohan is a well-rounded talent. He plays the piano and the tutu.
Interestingly, he has the streak of sports – playing rugby well enough to earn a spot in Kenya’s U18 national team.
Lens as a Tool for Social Impact
Rohan’s talents extend beyond capturing stunning images.
In November 2024, Rohan organized Mara Melodies, a charity music concert where all proceeds went to schools in the Maasai Mara.
It is his way of giving back to the community.
The concert’s success enabled a new fully stocked library for one school, beds and assorted furniture for two other schools. That’s incredibly inspiring.
The Challenge?
Managing photography, music, sports, and academics is no small task. Rohan admits that balance is his biggest challenge.
Yet, he continues to prove that passion and discipline can go hand in hand.
What’s Next for Rohan?
While his career aspirations lean toward engineering and sports, wildlife photography will always be part of his journey.
Rohan is not driven solely by winning awards – it’s about using his talent to champion conservation and share the beauty of the wild with the world.
His lens has greatly helped boost the image of Kenya’s wildlife in tourism circles.
Rohan’s story is proof that dedication, curiosity, and a love for one’s craft can open incredible doors.
Whether it’s through his lens, his music, or his sportsmanship, one thing is clear – he’s just getting started.
