Series seats still cost less in Cleveland
Resale prices on tickets for Tuesday’s sixth game of the World Series in Cleveland were hovering around $3,000 to $4,000 for mid-range seats available, far less than they had cost in Chicago.
And that’s with a title guaranteed to be decided either Tuesday or in Wednesday’s game seven if needed, as the Cleveland Indians lead the Chicago Cubs 3-2 in Major League Baseball’s best-of-seven final.
The same price difference was in evidence for the opening two games last week in Cleveland compared to last weekend’s games in Chicago, where seats were going for twice as much, some purchases topping $20,000.
A Cleveland savings had prompted many Cubs fans to drive the six hours from Chicago and pay for lodging and travel and still spend less than they would have for tickets to the three games played at Wrigley Field.
Resale website StubHub had two prime box seats listed for $50,000 each five hours before Tuesday’s first pitch of what could be the deciding game that ends one of the epic title droughts in baseball history.
The Cubs, who had not reached the World Series since 1945, have not won the crown since 1908, the longest championship drought in American sports. The Indians rank second in baseball’s title futility streak, last lifting the trophy in 1948.
Standing room was going for $650 a ticket with two outfield seats offering the cheapest place to sit in the stadium at $685 each.
For Wednesday, a game not yet certain to be played but certain to crown a champion if it is, the cheapest seats were going for $840 while the median price in the middle of all seats on offer was a hefty $8,325.
The high end for a game seven was around $20,000 with two hopeful souls seeking $50,000, one for standing room, and another charging 30 cents shy of $1 million for standing room.
