Sacked Senior Nation Editor Comes Back To Haunt The Company: He is Suing For Over 400 Million
The ghost of sacked senior Nation Editor Galava is back and this time with a vengeance.
The former editor was unceremoniously dismissed from his job by the powers that be at Nation after his stinging critique of the Jubilee government with focus on the president. Mr Denis Galava is suing the Nation Media Group for wrongful dismissal while at the same time suing NMG CEO Joe Muganda in a separate suit for defamation.
The sacked editor has four counts in his suit and for all he is suing for a total of 425 million which is just about an eighth of NMG’s profits. He says the reason given for his dismissal that of failing to follow a policy is invalid since the policy was put in place well after the article had been set up. The case has apparently set the management at NMG in a flurry of activities as they face what could potentially be the biggest payout to an employee in Kenya’s history for wrongful dismissal.
Denis Galava cites thee manner he was dismissed which has curtailed his chances of re-employment, the current inflation rate and his remaining 19 years before getting to retirement age as factors which have led to his placement of the compensation way above that provided by the employment act.
This second round of fight between NMG and its editor is bound to be filled with drama and publicity especially at a time when leading media houses are sacking employees all over.
