Oscar Pistorius temporarily released from prison
Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius was temporarily released from prison, to attend his grandfather’s funeral.
The star, is currently serving a 15 year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, five years ago.
Pistorius’ grandfather died last month at the age of 101, after going to hospital for a routine operation.
After he died, Pistorius who is said to have been devastated, applied to the Department of Correctional Services to attend his memorial.
He was then freed on ‘compassionate grounds’ to attend the service.
This is not the first time the star is being allowed out on compassionate grounds. In 2016, he attended his maternal grandmother’s memorial. In August last year, he also attended the funeral of his other grandmother.
Being allowed out for a third time has therefore raised eyebrows as to whether Pistorius may be getting preferential treatment.
The Department of Correctional Services has however come out saying: ‘An application has been made but it has not yet been fully considered.
“The Head of Centre has to consider a number of factors before an inmate is temporarily placed outside of a correctional facility as that carries risks.”
