Dumi Masilela’s alleged attacker being problematic
Mfundo Nkosi, one of the suspects in the late Dumi Masilela’s murder is allegedly refusing to co-operate with authorities. The news of his behavior was made known when the detective handling his case said that the suspect (Nkosi) had refused to be charged.
“Last time I went to Morddebee (correctional services), the suspect refused to be charged, saying that he needed to consult with his lawyer,” Detective Mthokozisi Ngwenya explained in the Benoni Magistrate Court. When asked by the magistrate how the suspect had refused to be charged, the prosecutor Lumka Phoso explained that he had refused to have his fingerprints taken.
Dumi Masilela, an actor and singer, died last month when he was trying to flee from a group of armed men in Tembisa. He was married to Simphiwe Ngema, an actress.
Nkosi confessed that he was in the car when Dumi was shot, but he was not the one who pulled the trigger. He claimed that another of his accomplices, had fired the shot. He also said that he and five other men were riding in a hijacked Jeep, and were riding around with the owner of the car, while trying to hijack the VW Dumi was driving. He turned himself in after he found that his co-accused, Bongani Masombuka, had been arrested for a different crime. They are alleged to have been part of a six-man gang who hijacked the owner of a black jeep in Daveyton, and drove off to Tembisa.
On Friday, the court heard that Nkosi and Masombuka had since been linked to the crime scene. Through his phone records, Masombuka was placed at the crime scene with Nkosi’s fingerprints found in the car.
They are currently facing charges of robbery in connection with the black Jeep they allegedly used, but are yet to be charged for any crime relating to Masilela’s attempted hijacking and killing.
