Family asks for simple tombstone in honor of Hugh Masekela
To honour the late Hugh Masekela’s wishes, his family has thus requested for a simple tombstone.
The government has made approaches to several tombstone companies on behalf of Masekela’s family, to ask if they could build a simple tombstone.
Masekela died on January 23rd at his Johannesburg home. He was then later cremated at a private ceremony.
Erect tombstone
Faith Mazibuko, Gauteng’s MEC for arts and culture, said the government wanted to erect a tombstone at a special section of West park cemetery.
“We spoke to the family after his death and they told us they wanted a very basic tombstone. They wanted something like a simple slab with his birth date and death date. Nothing fancy. I know that there was talk of a giant trumpet or elaborate design, but they said it was his wish that it be simple,” Nthato Nkwabi from Khaabo Tombstones said.
