Karlien van Jaarsveld opens up about emotional journey with daughter
Karlien van Jaarsveld took to Instagram to make a heartbreaking post. Doctors have been unable to perform a long-awaited medical procedure on her 1-year-old daughter, Elah.
Last year, she had to cancel shows to be with her daughter who was then seriously ill.
Karlien’s daughter has a blood clot in her portal vein.
“They call it Portal vein Thrombosis.”
“The long-awaited operation that my husband and I were looking forward to for Elah has taken place. All we want is for her to finally be healthy after this massive procedure. It gave us hope and helped us get through everything,” she wrote.
According to Karlien, the operation was supposed to last four hours. It was once the doctor met them in the paediatric room afterward that they got the bad news.
“He says ‘she’s fine, but I couldn’t do anything for her.’ I must have misheard him? Huh? What do you mean Dr.? Please repeat? ‘I couldn’t do the shunt’,” she recalls their interaction.
A shunt is used to open clogged veins, allowing fluid to move along from one part of the body to another.
“Our baby has been cut open, from one side to the other side of her little tummy, just to see that the Dr. can’t do anything for her. Her veins are totally different from what the radiologist told the Dr. and so he had to just stitch her up again. Such a big incision, with no change,” Karlien went on to say.
Elah is now in recovery.
“Elah is recovering in PICU. They are suppressing the pain with strong medication, and overtime will lessen her dosage as she gets better. My heart is in pieces and is being pulled in every direction.”
