Outcry on Twitter after The Bachelor SA reveal even as M-Net defends its choice

Lee Thompson was recently revealed as the country’s first bachelor. Soon after however, there was a social media outcry. This was from those who think he does not represent the ideal South African man.
Their biggest concern is that women of colour may be overlooked.

The creators of The Bachelor series have however defended their choice. For them, Lee fits the description of the kind of man the contestants wanted.
“In line with the international format of the showâ The Bachelorâ our local version had to be a prince charming. A highly attractiveâ adventurousâ charismatic and financially independent single man. Willing to put his heart on the line to find true love on televisionâ” M-Net spokesperson Lani Lombard said.
She has reassured fans that Lee is an open minded individual. He is willing to put a ring on the finger of a girl from any culture or background.
“He also had to be a match for each of the 25 ladies from different cultures and backgrounds who he will woo â and be wooed by â in the Bachelor mansion. We based our final decision based on what the diverse group of shortlisted ladies described as their prince charming.”
M-Net is confident that viewers will fall in love with Lee as soon as they see him in action.
“These type of conversations are a reflection of the society we live in and not an indication of M-Netâs values and beliefsâ” Lani added.
