Raila Instructs Lawyers To Sue Hospitals That Turned Away The Patient Who Died After Waiting In An Ambulance For 18 hours
Last Friday, the late Alex Madaga made headlines after several news outlets highlighted his misery in the hands of medical institutions.
The deceased was rushed to Kikuyu Mission Hospital after being knocked by a speeding car along Waiyaki Way on Monday the 5th. The hospital referred him to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialized treatment.
KNH refused to admit Alex on grounds that it did not have an ICU bed. The departed was then rushed to different hospitals but still they couldn’t admit him without a cash payment of Sh200,000.
He was taken back to KNH but he was not admitted until the evening of the following day after his lawyer cousin fought to have him taken in by the hospital. By then, Alex had already spent 18 hours in the ambulance fighting for his life.
The 37 year old Alex passed on three days after he was admitted at Kenyatta. Sources say he died at 1:50pm last Friday.
Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, has since instructed his lawyers Anthony Oluoch and Mr Edwin Sifuna, to institute legal proceedings against hospitals for denying Alex emergency medical treatment.
Raila says every Kenyan is guaranteed by the constitution the highest attainable standard of health be it in a private or public health facilities.
The CORD leaders added he had instructed his lawyers to liaise with Mr. Madaga’s family to institute legal proceedings against the hospitals.
