Kenya's recently passed alcoholic drinks control act is too restrictive and will harm the country's crucial tourism sector, hotel and bar owners complained on December 7. The law, which came into force late last month prohibits alcohol from being sold before 2:00 pm on weekends and 5:00 pm on weekdays and bans licensing for an establishment located within 300 meters of a school. The new law, which also clamps down on the deadly illicit brew known as Changa'a and attempts to curb underage drinking, was welcomed by anti-drug abuse campaigners. But many restaurant, hotel and bar owners were left reeling by the new law and mulling their strategy to have some restrictions eased during the nine-month grace period granted to the main affected parties by the new act. If there is one thing Nairobi men look forward to, it’s leaving the house at midday on a Saturday all in the pretext of taking the family car for a wash. It’s the perfect excuse to leave the house and go indulge in some cold ones and nyama choma with the boys while catching up with a game of football.
All this however will change starting tomorrow as Nairobi men have no choice but to spend time with the missus and the kids and this is after a statement by Nairobi water asking for the closure of all car washes in Nairobi due to the current water shortage.
The statement came as follows:
The Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Ltd. would like to put on notice that all Car Wash service vendors have been ordered to cease operations forthwith.
This is due to the ongoing water predicament, the recent water distribution schedule and the Meteorological reports in the public domain as regards to the weather patterns.
This is aimed at water conservation as the vendors use treated water to wash vehicles which is prejudicial during this difficult times.
Stringent measures will be taken against the car wash sites that contravene this order as well as the operators/owners.
