More than Just a Pretty Face: This Is What Machakos First Lady Is Doing For Her People (Photos)

Gone are the days when politicians’ wives just sat at home looking pretty.

Nowadays, many politicians’ wives are involved in projects that help the community such as Mama Margaret Kenyatta’s ‘Beyond Zero’ Campaign and Lillian Ng’ang’a’s Cancer Awareness campaign.

Madam Lillian Ng’ang’a yesterday led the people of Oldonyo Sabuk in a cancer awareness and testing campaign where she encouraged County residents to go for testing and help spread the word on cancer.

“All of us have a responsibility to spread the word on the importance of cancer screening-because when the disease is detected early, it’s curable” she said.

She said cancer has claimed and continues to claim many lives and everyone must stand to fight it.

She challenged them to invest in their health by eating healthy and engaging in some form of exercise.

Women were urged to go for pap smears and mammogram tests while the men were encouraged to go for prostate tests.

Lillian also encouraged those diagnosed with cancer not to consider it a death sentence but get encouraged by the many testimonials from the cancer survivors who shared their experiences to embrace treatment and not allow themselves to be affected by the stigma associated with the disease.

“We all have a role in battling cancer by example; we need to put an end to myths that lead to stigma against cancer patients, as well as educating ourselves and our families on ways through which we can prevent cancer.”

She further called on both the National and County government to allocate more resources for cancer research and treatment and urged other partners including the NGO’s and private sector to be part of the cancer awareness initiatives in the county and help improve the lives of the people.

The first lady also urged everyone to offer support to all affected people since they require love, care and prayers.

The awareness campaign at Oldonyo Sabuk was part of her Cancer awareness initiative that she has spearheaded across Machakos County.
