Two of the most legendary and storied soccer teams in the Country are at Nyayo Stadium for the much-anticipated Nairobi Derby also dubbed the ‘Mashemeji Derby’
The game which kicks off at 3pm (East Africa time) has attracted hundreds-if not thousands-of avid football lovers from across the Country but mostly from Western and Nairobi.
Since morning, the streets of Nairobi have been abuzz with much pomp and excitement with zealous fans flocking the streets resplendent in the traditional team colors ; Green and White for Gor Mahia and Blue and White for AFC Leopards.
All roads lead to Nyayo Stadium for this historic derby. And if you’re not there yet,and are not planning to go there,we can keep you updated on how things are looking from the ground.
The last time Gor Mahia won a ‘derby’ against rivals AFC Leopards in the league was on May 12, 2013, when Ugandan striker Dan Sserunkuma converted Rama Salim’s cross in 74th minute to give K’ogalo a win by a solitary goal.
From there, the teams have met four times in the league with AFC Leopards winning once – 3-1 victory in 2014 – while three matches have ended in draws.
Clearly,This is a big day for football lovers nationally. It’s interesting to see how the game looks like, who gets to triumph and whether we shall be treated to the typical ugly scenes that always follow every Mashemeji Derby.
