Liverpool vs Manchester United: All you need to know about Monday’s epic clash between English Premier League’s greatest rivals

The two most successful clubs in England square it off on Monday night at Anfield in one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures in any Premier League calendar.

Starting time: 10:00 pm (Kenyan Time)

League standings

Liverpool lie fourth on the table.

A win for the Reds will see them leapfrog Spurs into third and join both Manchester City and Arsenal on 19 points.

Manchester United are a further three points back and occupy seventh place in the league.

Form:

Liverpool are in red-hot form, winning their last four Premier League games – their longest run of successive wins under Klopp – while United have already lost two league matches this season and are five points behind leaders Manchester City.

Head to Head:

A defeat for Liverpool will be the first time they have lost three straight home league games to Manchester United since January 2005.

United have won their last four league games against Liverpool and seven of the last nine.

That run of four defeats for Liverpool is their worst since losing five consecutive matches to United in March 2008.

Liverpool have lost 67 league matches against Manchester United – more than against any other opponent.

There has not been a draw between the two sides domestically since a 1-1 league stalemate at Anfield in October 2011.

Match Stats

Since Klopp was appointed as Liverpool manager in October 2015, they have scored more goals than any other Premier League team (73) and have the highest average possession figure (58.8 per cent).

Juan Mata has had a hand in five goals in his last four appearances against Liverpool in the Premier League, scoring three and assisting two.

Klopp has lost just one of his five meetings with Mourinho (W3 D1), with that defeat coming in 2013 when Borussia Dortmund lost 2-0 at Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg.

Managers’ Quotes

Jurgen Klopp

“Apart from the table, it’s a very important game. I know about the history, I like the special stories. The whole world will watch this game, it’s a big honour to be part of it.

“At the end, it’s up to us to perform to our best. You cannot and should not ignore the special circumstance of a game like this. You have to be ready.

“They have big quality and we have to respect this, as we do. But this is Anfield. We have to show this. We have had a few nice atmospheres but I’m open for the best atmosphere. We need everybody in a Liverpool shirt in this game.”

Jose Mourinho:

“I always like to play at Anfield. I have won big matches and lost big matches there, so I cannot say I like to go there as I am always successful as this is not true. I like to go there, I like the atmosphere and the characteristics of the matches.”

Team News

A groin problem means Adam Lallana is set to miss out for Liverpool, along with Georginio Wijnaldum after he was injured playing for the Netherlands.

Defenders Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren are back in contention and fit-again Emre Can could make a first league start of the season.

Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan and defender Luke Shaw are fit for the trip to Anfield following injuries.

Phil Jones is the only player sidelined in an otherwise fully fit squad.
