Why Kenyans have celebrated the DPP dropping Lali Omar’s case

Tecra Mungai’s former boyfriend, Lali Omar has bee the subject of ongoing investigations as police sort to place the blame for her death on him. It should be remembered that Tecra Mungai, one of the daughters of the family that owns and runs Keroche Industries, had met her untimely death following a fall from the balcony of a home she was staying in with her boyfriend in Kenya’s coastal region.

Dear reader, this incident involving Lali Omar and Tecra Mungai was a poignant reminder that in Kenya, we believe suspects are innocent until proven guilty -unless you’re poor.

The most recent developments in the case occurred first on July 15th, when the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) ordered a mental assessment be done on Omar Lali to ascertain that he was in a good mental state and fit to stand trial.
However, on July 16th, the court set the 54-year old Lamu native free after the DPP requested an open inquest to terminate the murder case against Mr Lali.

To Kenyans, the case was a stark contrast to how the judiciary has been handling the ongoing case between DJ Evolve and Babu Owino. In that case, Babu Owino is shown on closed-circuit TV shooting DJ Evolve on the neck after a brief exchange instigated by Babu Owino.

On the one hand, Lali Omar got to be a guest of the state with the complete benefits even in a case with scant evidence. On the other hand, we got to see a video of the shooting and Babu Owino is still enjoying his full freedom and all the perks that come with being a politician -which in our shithole nation are many.

So Kenyans are celebrating Lali Omar’s freedom because they can empathize with the Lamu native. You see, for most of us, being in his shoes would be the simple occurrence of a chance of fate and while Amor Fati, most Kenyans understand they wouldn’t stand a chance. Even more despair at the thoughts of having their destiny decided by Kenya’s judiciary.

So a win for Lali Omar is a win for us all against what most Kenyans see as a flawed judicial system.
