Her brother, George, and cousin Masha were abducted in Mogadishu, Somalia, in January 2014. For years, the family received minimal updates about their whereabouts. However, in March 2014, her brother managed to reach out and explain the circumstances surrounding their abduction. “He told us what had gone on because before then we just relied on sources,” Mburu shared.

Despite this initial contact, the family has endured a prolonged period of silence, marked by anxiety and uncertainty. On October 7, 2024, Wanjiku Mburu received another call from her brother after 10 long years, leaving her shaken.

“Nothing can prepare you for this,” she recalled, recounting how her father delivered the news to her. “For a moment, I lost it. My father called and said, ‘Shiko, where are you?’ This was a voice I had never heard him use with me before. I asked, ‘Daddy, what’s wrong?’ He said, ‘Your brother wants to speak to you.’”

Initially hesitant to answer a call from a Somali number, Mburu eventually picked up the phone. On the other end was a voice she hadn’t heard in a decade. Her brother greeted her, saying, “Shee, ni Kajijo,” using his nickname.

During their brief conversation, her brother described the dire conditions he has faced in captivity, stating, “I know nothing but four walls, handcuffs on my hands, and chains on my feet.”

He urged Wanjiku to keep their plight in the public eye, saying, “Let us talk about him and my cousin consistently. The government needs to know that they are Kenyans,” she emphasized.

Wanjiku Mburu’s brother, who is battling diabetes, is in worsening health. He has called for the Kenyan government’s intervention to secure his and his cousin’s return. Mburu is now rallying fellow artists and the public to support this cause.

“Your Excellency, President William Ruto, we have Kenyans in Somalia. He is in a desperate situation,” she addressed the president directly.

Additionally, Wanjiku Mburu urged the public to come together in raising awareness. “Let’s unite and bring our brothers back home,” she implored.
