Waihiga Mwaura set to leave Citizen TV after becoming first Kenyan journalist to win coveted Komla Dumor award

The Komla Dumor Award is a journalism award sponsored by the BBC. It’s awarded to outstanding individuals living and working in Africa, with strong journalism skills, on-air flair, and an exceptional talent in telling African stories [sic]

Ugandan born former KTN anchor Nancy Kacungira was the first journalist to win the inaugural Komla Dumor Award back 2015.

First male, and first Kenyan journalist

Citizen TV’s Waihiga Mwaura won the 2018 BBC World News Komla Dumor Award. He becomes the first male journalist to clinch the Komla Dumor Award, all the previous winners Nancy Kacungira (Uganda), Didi Akinyelure and Amina Yuguda (both from Nigeria) are female journalists.

Mwaura is also the first Kenyan journalist to win the coveted Komla Dumor award. He is now set to leave Citizen TV following his win.

Komla Dumor Award winners usually earn a three-months’ development contract at BBC. They eventually end up working for BBC at the end of it all.

Nancy Kacungira joined BBC permanently after her three month contract ended, Waihiga Mwaura is also likely to join BBC permanently.
