Urgent Warning: Deadly “Eye-Bleeding Disease” Outbreak in Tanzania
A highly contagious and potentially fatal virus, Marburg, is spreading in Tanzania, prompting urgent warnings from global health officials. This Ebola-like disease has already claimed eight lives out of nine confirmed cases.
Marburg, a hemorrhagic fever, causes internal and external bleeding, including from the eyes, mouth, and ears. It has a devastatingly high mortality rate of up to 88%. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or treatments available.
Symptoms and Spread
Marburg presents with sudden onset of severe headaches, fever, diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting. These symptoms rapidly worsen.
The virus spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, contaminated surfaces, and potentially through infected animals.
Outbreak Concerns
The outbreak is centered in the Kagera region of northeastern Tanzania, but there are concerns about potential spread to neighboring countries like Rwanda and Burundi due to significant cross-border movement.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has deployed teams to the affected area and is urging vigilance among health workers.
Previous Outbreaks
This is not the first Marburg outbreak in Tanzania. In March 2023, an outbreak in the Bukoba district resulted in several deaths.
WHO Response
The WHO acknowledges the potential for further cases and is emphasizing the importance of improved disease surveillance. They are also working to identify the source of the outbreak.
