Two people dead three critically injured following multi-vehicle crash on Southern Bypass
At least two people were killed Tuesday morning in a multi-vehicle collision on the Southern Bypass in Nairobi. The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. near the Ole Sereni area.
According to police, the accident began when a lorry traveling from Kikuyu lost control, crossed into the oncoming lane, and collided with a trailer. The impact caused a chain reaction, affecting three additional vehicles that were following the trailer.
The collision resulted in a fire that engulfed the vehicles. Both drivers involved in the crash died at the scene, with one being burned beyond recognition.
Rescue teams arrived promptly to free passengers who had become trapped in the wreckage. A fire engine was dispatched to control the blaze, while police diverted traffic from the Mombasa Road direction, leading to significant congestion.
The incident is under investigation, with authorities examining the cause of the crash.
This accident is part of a troubling trend, as up to 4,000 people die in road accidents annually in the country. The National Transport and Safety Authority cites major causes of fatal crashes, including hit-and-runs, tyre bursts, loss of vehicle control, improper overtaking, and lane violations.
Efforts are underway to address these issues and improve road safety.
