Two Killed, 25 Injured in Matatu Accident In Makueni County
A 14-seater matatu rolled several times at Muliilii area along Wote-Makindu road in Makueni County on Sunday, August 20, killing two people and injuring 25 others.
The deceased included a middle-aged woman and a 5-year-old child. The injured were taken to Makindu Sub-county Hospital for treatment.
Makindu OCPD Jashon Bolooh said the matatu was heading to Makindu from Wote when it rolled several times. He said the matatu was overloaded.
Patrick Mutinda, the doctor in charge of Makindu Sub-county Hospital, said they received 10 men and 15 women who sustained injuries during the accident. Out of the 25 victims, seven were children below 10 years.
Mutinda said six of the casualties sustained serious injuries and were admitted at the facility while the others were treated and released to go home.
He said the six who were admitted at the facility suffered various injuries, including spinal cord injury and head injuries.
The police have launched investigations into the accident.
The accident is a reminder of the importance of road safety. Overloading matatus is a major contributor to road accidents in Kenya. Passengers should avoid boarding overloaded matatus and should also ensure that they are wearing seat belts.
