This Afro fusion singer has taken matters into his own hands in a bid to sell Kenyan music out there to the world
#PlayKenyanMusic has been the song on social media for a while. Kenyan musicians are demanding for their songs to be given priority on local TV and radio stations.
But before the 60% airplay come into effect, a Kenyan musician already decided to take matters into his own hands to promote Kenyan songs abroad.
Japiny is an Afro fusion singer who is more famous abroad than he is locally – reminds me of Suzanna Owíyo who performed for late Nelson Mandela and at other international events before Kenyans could finally celebrate her.
Alternative platforms
Well, you might not have heard about Japiny before but he is a full time artiste who earns his living through music. Apart from performing regularly at high-end restaurants and hotels, Japiny supplements his income by selling his music on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and Deezer.
Only a handful of Kenyan musicians are on these platforms. Japiny has been able to utilize these alternative platforms to earn a living… ohh yes, he has settled in life.
The Afro fusion singer has a band called ‘Kivuli band’ and they perform at different high-end hotels in town, they have a gig every Sunday at Explorer Tervan in Kilimani.
Japiny recently released his album dubbed ‘Face of Africa which is available on alternative platforms and on his website www.japinymusic.com
Below is one of the songs from Japiny’s album, a song dubbed ‘Dunia’:
