Magix Enga is did big things in the local music scene in 2020

Kenya has no shortage of good music producers. However there are some whose work is a cut above the rest. One such person is Magix Enga.

You see, a beat plays a big part in determining whether a song will go viral or not. The lyrics and video are just meant to spice it up. You want to debate this?

If you are keen, I’m sure you’ve noticed that the beats for most viral Kenyan songs are always from three to four local music producers, one of them is Magix Enga.

Magix Enga
Magix Enga

If you hear, “Magix Enga on the beat” when a song is beginning, you just know that your eardrums are about to have the time of their lives. Where is the lie?

His greatest work to date (according to me of course) was Dundaing which was one of the biggest songs in 2018. Actually, it was the biggest!

Other songs that he has produced are; Digi Digi by Arrow Bwoy, Wembe by Timmy Tdat, Fire by P Unit, Dala Dala by Otile Brown, Matiati by Zzero Sufuri, We Run This by KRG. The list is endless.

If  you listen to the songs that he has produced, you’ll notice how distinct the beat is. It’s different from the norm. Perhaps this explains why anything he touches turns into gold instantly.

Magix Enga
Magix Enga

In my opinion, Magix Enga, who has been in the game for 10 years now, is taking Kenyan music to the international stage, with his signature beat, one song at a time.

He is showing us that it can be done by actually doing it. One day, when all is said and done, we’ll have him to thank for making Kenyan music enjoyable and helping artists to cross borders with their music.

Zzero Sufuri’s inability to pay his hospital bill raises many questions

A few days ago, Zimenishika hitmaker Zzero Sufuri was involved in a road accident while he was riding his motorcycle in Kibra.

He was then rushed to St Peter’s hospital in Uthiru where he was asked for Ksh 70,000, which he didn’t have.

It took the intervention of several musicians who raised funds and eventually, the hospital admitted him after his manager made a down payment.

Zzero Sufuri in hospital

One would think that Zzero Sufuri, who has had mega hits like Zimenishika, Matisha, Matiati, Dondosa, and performed at big events like Koroga would not have a problem raising Ksh 70,000.

Understandably, he has to pay for studio time, video production and cater for his basic needs but to be honest, his inability to pay the hospital bill raised many questions.

One is; are Gengetone artists living in squalor despite having big hits and if that is the case who is trying to swindle them? Do they have shady managers?

The second question is whether Gengetone artists are aware of the sources of revenue that they can take advantage of, other than performing at shows, and whether they are taking advantage of them.

Zzero Sufuri

The truth is that most Gengetone artists just jumped the bandwagon without  knowing the nitty gritty details of the business side of music and to date, many of them have not bothered to find out.

However, I must commend the likes of Boondocks Gang and Ethic, when their careers began to pick up they opted to sign up with international music labels with have really helped them grow.

On the other hand, some Gengetone artists just picked their friends to act like their mind the fact that they know little or nothing about the music business and that is just sad.

Watch Zimenishika below and tell us what you think.

Kenyan artists are mining gold hosting live shows, and not stopping even after the pandemic

Hollywood star Idris Elba proved his prowess away from the screen to host an electric live show tagged Africa Day Benefit Concert @ Home in celebration of Africa Day, on 25th May 2020. The concert was break from the normal, thanks to changing times occasioned by the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The exclusively African show was awash with a stellar cast of regional celebrities to make the online concert a digital musical talent footprint. In normal times, this cast would have graced the red carpet in the characteristic VIP treatment vibe, but well, times change.

Idris Elba had a terrific time hosting stars Bebe Cool, Yemi Alade, Sauti Sol, Burna Bwoy amongst others. Also making an appearance was South African stand-up comedian and TV host, Trevor Noah.

Closer home, Kenyan stars have had to re-package their brands to remain relevant in the dynamic industry. In the earlier times physical shows and concerts would give an artist instant feedback from their fans, but would be a handicap of sorts – their fan base would be restricted. Only the artists familiar with their work would be available.

A live, online show has a greater reach. An artist easily interests and captures followers beyond their normal fan base. This is great, especially post-pandemic with promise of sold out shows inclusive of the new following achieved in live YouTube and IG shows.

In Kenya, it’s hard to credit the most memorable live show. The list is impressive. They have had to learn on the job – there’s no handbook to learn from!

Music fans have been treated to the One Day Concert, by the eclectic performing artist Juliani. This show had a striking ‘Fight Inequality – Fight Covid-19’ theme. Another regular concert that took refuge online is the iconic Koroga Festival on Sunday 24th, which featured artists Zzero Sufuri and the Boondock’s Gang, live.

Yemi Alade

The perennial star Nyashinski has made a mark with his IG show. The Decimal Chronicles concert tagged the ‘Curfew Edition’ was lit, notably songstress Bridget Blue kicking it off with her single, Cheza.

Naiboi has teamed up with Avril, and H_Art the Band live on diverse dates and kept their followers on their toes. With such talent and vigor seen with Naiboi, the energy seeps right through the digital barriers.

Besides the music stars, celebrated mix-master DJ Bash became the first Kenyan entertainer to do a 24-hr live IG show. That’s previously unseen on these shores – uninterrupted, sizzling performance.

In this industry, things and trends change in an instant. Regardless of how things get after the global pandemic is brought under control, the live shows by our artists will be to stay. They’ve timely uncovered a hitherto-ignored digital gold mine, and its infinite possibilities.

Kenyan artists need to think outside the box

The emergence of of the new crop of Kenyan musicians is good proof that all the players in the local entertainment industry should think outside the box. It is what it is.

Also read: New age musicians are unpredictable and that’s the beauty of music

Every time you listen to a song by Zzero Sufuri, Ochunglo Family, Sailors Gang, Boondocks Gang, Rico Gang and the likes you should remember that we would not be here today if Ethic didn’t look at music from a different perspective.

Ochunglo Family
Ochunglo Family

For a long time, Kenya had a copy paste approach to music. Musicians would wait for the likes of Nonini, Jua Cali and Nameless to release a song then they would hit the studio and release a song that is similar to the ones by these artists.

Back then, Genge and Kapuka were the in-thing. Funny enough, nobody thought they should invent a new sound and own it until Ethic came along with Lamba Lolo in 2018 and changed the game.

Interestingly, the same thing is now happening with the Kenyan sound. Every artist, even the established ones, is now making music that you can tell borrows a lot from the sound that Ethic introduced us to.

Ethic Figa
Ethic

This is a good sign that most Kenyan artists are afraid of thinking outside the box. Instead of copying a sound that already exists why don’t they come up with a distinct sound that they can own?

The Kenyan industry can only grow if we diversify i.e. have different approaches to music so that even the people who don’t feel the wamlambez and lamba lolo vibe can have something that they can listen to.

Zzero Sufuri teams up with Shanty Taaffeitte on ‘From The Inside’ (Video)

Zzero Sufuri, who is famed for hits such as; Zimenishika, Matisha and Dondosa, has released a new track with an up and coming artist by the name Shanty Taaffeitte on a track and we love it.

Also read: Zzero Sufuri is a creative genius

The song titled From The Inside is different from any song that the Kabiria-bred musician has released before in that it has an uptown and ghetto vibe at the same time.

Zzero Sufuri recruits Mogi for 'Love Me'
Zzero Sufuri

The underlying message is that we should not judge people based on how they look but their soul because that’s what God cares about.

To be honest, the first time I listened to this jam I was so confused because I could not really tell whether I liked it or not. However, the more I listened to is is the more I realized that it’s a masterpiece.

As you listen to From The Inside, you get to appreciate Zzero Sufuri’s sheer creativity. He has unique ability to match random words and ends up making some dope rhymes.

Zzero Sufuri on Manzi. This new jam is dope
Zzero Sufuri

If you are a big fan the Zimenishika hitmaker, like myself, then I am sure you know that he has been trying to change his sound this year and I believe it working.

Shanty Taaffeitte also killed it. The truth is that we are used to Zzero Sufuri and how he sings and this lass spiced this track by bringing a different vibe and to add to that, their styles blend so well.

The beat and instrumentation on this jam are dope. Other than the fact they make From The Inside catchy, they also blend so well with the vocals of both Zzero Sufuri and Shanty Taaffeitte. Kudos to K-Wise.

Zzero Sufuri takes us to church with ‘Bwana Wa Mabwana’ (Video)

Many people, including myself, never thought Zzero Sufuri – who is famed for his Zimenishika mega hit – would one day release a gospel song and I’ll be the first to acknowledge that we were wrong.

A few hours ago, the musician who was born and bred in Kabiria released a track titled Bwana Wa Mabwana and it has been ruling the airwaves.

Zzero Sufuri recruits Mogi for 'Love Me'
Zzero Sufuri

Basically, this song is all about giving thanks to God for all the wonderful things that he has done and continues to do in our lives and acknowledging the sacrifice that Jesus made for us.

Although Zzero Sufuri’s first gospel song is a rendition of the popular praise tune titled Bwana Wa Majeshi, I’m sure that after listening to it, you’ll will agree with me that the execution is brilliant.

This jam is so infectious. I have listened to it a couple of times since it was released and every time I play it, it’s like I am hearing it for the very first time. Yup, it’s that good ladies and gentlemen.

Zzero Sufuri
Zzero Sufuri

As expected, Zzero Sufuri’s flow in this jam is impeccable, you just want to keep listening to him as he does hit thing and believe you me, Bwana Wa Mabwana might just uplift your spirit.

I know people have mixed feelings about Gengetone gospel but if the likes of Bahati, Masterpiece and Size 8 took this approach, I doubt we would even have a problem with them.

The beat and instrumentation on this track are impeccable. Other than the fact that they make the song catchy, they also blend well with Zzero Sufuri’s vibe, flow and tempo.

Zzero Sufuri recruits Mogi for ‘Love Me’ (Video)

The song dubbed Love Me is about a guy who’s trying to convince a certain lady to fall in love with him and not to let anyone or anything come between them. Put simply, it’s a love ballad.

Zzero Sufuri
Zzero Sufuri

To be honest, the first time I listened to this jam I was so confused because I could not really tell whether I liked it or not. However, the more I listened to is is the more I realized that it’s a masterpiece.

Perhaps, if you listen to it when you are stoned, it will slap even harder. And no, I’m not telling you do drugs because they are bad, aren’t they? I digress.

As you listen to this jam, you get to appreciate Zzero Sufuri’s sheer creativity. He has unique ability to match random words and ends up making some dope rhymes.

If you are a huge fan of the singer who hails from Kabiria, like myself, then I’m sure you know that he has been trying to change his sound this year.

Zzero Sufuri

Most of his releases in 2020 have not been about weed and whatnot but about love. If you ask me, that’s a step in the right direction especially because his songs are still catchy.

Mogi really spiced up this jam with his amazing vocals. Believe you me, this guy can really sing and the way he does it you sort of feel an instant connection but then again maybe that’s just me.

The beat and instrumentation on this jam are dope. Other than the fact they make Love Me catchy, they also blend so well with the vocals of both artists.

Zzero Sufuri is back with ‘Intentions’ and it’s the best thing you’ll hear today (Video)

It seems Zzero Sufuri is hellbent on changing his sound in 2020 because days after he dropped Maria, he’s back with a new jam that is also quite different.

Also read: Kenyan artists should be very worried about Zzero Sufuri

Dubbed Intentions, this track is about informing a girl that he is eyeing what his plans with her are. He says he wants to take her to church and they will head out to smoke a blunt.

Zzero Sufuri
Zzero Sufuri

Later on, he will take her back home for another service because he has heard that she has a problem with her cervix – which is the lower part uterus – and if you are not a prude then I’m sure you know what this means.

I have been listening to this track on repeat since it was released a few days ago and every time I play it, it’s like I am hearing if for the first time.

Actually, as I was listening to it I was smiling the whole time because Zzero Sufuri’s creativity is on another level. He is one of a kind and a bad ass lyricist.

The Zimenishika hitmaker has some dope wordplay, the kind that leaves you scratching your head as you try to make sense of what he has just said.

Zzero Sufuri

For instance the verse where he says, “After service, twende nikufanyie service, naskia uko na shida kwa cervix, girl I know you deserve this, to be perfect inafaa tukuwe tukiprcatice.” Can we all give him a standing ovation for this?

The other thing that Zzero has proven in this song is that he can also sing his heart out and to add to that, he is doing it in English.  That hook is totally fire ladies and gentlemen.

Notably, the producer, Brayo K Wise, also did a good job on the beat. Actually, I totally love the fact that Zzero Sufuri is working with a different producer this year. That way, he is able to explore different sounds.

Listen to Intentions below and tell us what you think.

Zzero Sufuri pours his heart out in epic love song ‘Maria’ (Video)

If at all there’s a Kenyan artist who surprises me with every subsequent release then it’s Zzero Sufuri. His creativity is on another level ladies and gentlemen.

Also read: Kenyan artists should be very worried about Zzero Sufuri

You see, we’ve gotten used to the Matiati hitmaker singing about weed and whatnot but this time around, he decided to take things a notch higher.

His new song dubbed Maria is a love ballad of sorts. I bet you never thought you would see this day, did you? Well, it is finally here. Zzero Sufuri is pouring out his heart like never before.

Zzero Sufuri
Zzero Sufuri

As you can already tell, this jam is about a lady who is known as Maria and apparently, she is driving the singer crazy so much so that he is willing to do anything to keep her. You thought gangsters can’t fall in love huh?

In the song, Zzero Sufuri tells men to be cautious when they’re choosing their own Marias because some are just after their money, will drive them crazy and leave them suffering.

I totally love this song because it’s different from the norm. I have listened to it a couple of times since it was released and every time I play it, it’s like I am hearing it for the very first time. Yup, it’s that good.

Zzero Sufuri’s flow in Maria is on point. The fact that it’s a love song didn’t stop him from making some dope rhymes that sound so pleasant to the ears.

The beat and instrumentation on this jam are also sick. One of the things that caught my attention was, of course, the guitar sound because it’s so damn infectious.

Listen to Maria below and tell us what you think. Enjoy!

Zzero Sufuri is back with a new jam ‘Magode Choke’ and it too lit (Video)

Zzero Sufuri, who is arguably the most creative new-age artist and famed for his Zimnishika mega hit, has released a new track and it’s getting good reception from his fans.

Also read: Kenyan artists should be very worried about Zzero Sufuri

The song titled Magode Choke is all about smoking weed. I mean, what were you expecting? Anyway, I’m joking. The fact that Zzero Sufuri has released yet another song about smoking weed does not mean that it’s whack.

Zzero Sufuri
Zzero Sufuri

To be honest, the first time I listened to this jam I was so confused because I could not really tell whether I liked it or not. However, the more I listened to is is the more I realised that it’s a masterpiece.

Like the part where he says, “Niko jaba ndani ya Ummoinner, jaba ndani ya Ummoiner, mi hukataga to mamuratina, chinjianga dem ako na itina, me naiita inaniskiza, iikjipa bado nitaifinya.”

Zzero Sufuri

What! Is this guy even human like the rest of us? Sometimes I wonder because his creativity is out of this world. He’s without a doubt one of the best lyricists that this country has ever seen.

The ragga and dancehall beat by Idrisa is also impeccable. This lad brings out the best in Zzero Sufuri since he knows him too well. I look forward to the two them working together for a very long time.

Magix Enga fires shots at Harmonize in new jam ‘Twa Twa’ featuring Zzero Sufuri, Nuclear and Mkadule (Video)

Talented Producer-cum-singer Magix Enga has escalated his ‘beef’ with Tanzanian singer Harmonize after throwing shade at him in his latest release featuring Zzero Sufuri, Nuclear and Mkadule.

Also read: Magix Enga has taken Kenyan music to the international stage

The song dubbed Twa Twa was inspired by a viral clip that showed a pastor known as Susan Munene of Overcomers Hope Ministry in Kasarani.

She urged couples to engage in intimacy anywhere and everywhere claiming that it was the only Game that was made by God unlike football, netball and rugby.

Zzero Sufuri

“Kama kuna kitu inatufanya tuwe kitu kimoja na pastor ni sex, us we can have sex anywhere, kwa gari ni twa twa kwa kitchen twa twa everywhere,” Munene explained.

As you would expect, many Kenyan artists decided to jump on the bandwagon and have been releasing songs to take advantage of the viral clip. The latest of course, is the one by Magix Enga.

Out of all the Twa Twa versions that I have heard, I think this the catchiest one. It just flows. From the moment you hit the play button you just know that it;s about to get lit.

Apart form the fact that Magix Enga is rapping in this song (we are used to him singing), I also loved that he mocked Harmonize days after he issued a copyright strike on the latter’s latest release dubbed Uno.

Harmonize
Harmonize

As you would expect, Zzero Sufuri came through on this jam. He really aced his verse. Seriously though, when has he ever disappointed us? This chap is a legend.

I also liked Mkadule’s verse. This guy has some mad rhymes and cheeky wordplay and you just want to keep listening to him as he goes about his business.

The beat was also on point. Anyway, I was not expecting anything less seeing as it was produced by Magix Enga. Can you trust him if he can’t make a dope beat for himself? I guess not.

Watch Twa Twa below and tell us what you think.

Dondosa by Zzero Sufuri is all about the waist(Audio)

Zzero Sufuri has clearly made a name for himself since the days of “Zmenishika” hit. With a recent successful tour to Dubai, Zzero is back to the Music scene with a new jam  dubbed  “Dondosa”.

Zzero is among the many artist that manage to get their niche in the gengetone  dominated field now. On the other hand his sheng vibe gives him the upper hand in his scope of  music.

Dondosa

Dondosa is a sheng word that means whine your waist-If that is what I got right. In some sense some people say Zzero Sufuri is what was missing in the genge field. Why? This is because the lad posses some flow that many Kenyans would call magical.

Zzero

Lyrics

Dondosa is a fill good song calling out on people especially ladies to have fun. In addition he showers his girl with praises on how she makes him happy when she whines her waist.

Well, that’s just how it goes.“Si nimekupendaga bana jo ukizitoka Vile huzitoka hunifanya bado nachoka Kwanza ukidondosa unafanya jasho inanitoka Naskia kuzitoka, bila hata kuniogopa….” reads part of the lyrics.

The song is produced by Brayo K Wise who did a beautiful job when it comes to the songs arrangement. The Genge basics intertwined with drum instrumentation of horns and bits of a bass drum, plays all the magic .

For what its worth Zzero did a good job in this jam all we can do wait for the video and see if the visuals will blend with the lyrics.

However from the views on Youtube, the call for support for Kenyan music is still up. Only problem is how fast Kenyans overlook talent but Zzero is clearly one talent not to be forgotten.

In the meantime, I will rate it at 7/10. Tell us what you think after you listen.

My father is a preacher and he respects my songs- ‘Zimenishika’ Hitmaker Zzero Sufuri

Zimenishika hitmaker Zzero Sufuri has shared with fans that though he might sing some very raunchy songs, his parents still love his work.

Speaking during an interview on TV, Zzero surprised his fans when he revealed that his father is a preacher. He added that his father appreciates his talent and respects his craft.

“I love and adore him, he has brought me this far. He has his own church and respects my hustle like any other career. This is also my church,” said Sufuri.

Work

Zzero Sufuri on Manzi. This new jam is dope

The rapper burst into the scene after releasing the hit Zimenishika. So far he has released four solo singles – ‘Matisha’, ‘Chuki na Doo’, ‘Matiati’, and ‘Manzi’.

Zzero Sufuri is a creative genius

Every time I listen to a song by Zzero Sufuri, I can’t help but acknowledge his ingenuity. This chap is on his own level. His style is quite different from that of most new-age artists in that it really focuses on lyricism rather than random rhyming words.

Also read:  Zzero Sufuri Vs Ethic: Who’s really the baddest?

Most people came to know about him when he released Zimenishika and I’m sure they have been hooked to his music since then. In my opinion, he is the undisputed king of the new Kenyan sound or ghetto anthems if you like.

As you listen to his songs, you can tell that his music will outlive that of his peers because of his uniqueness. Although he is more of a dancehall artist, there’s also a small element of mumble rap in his music. Maybe, just maybe this is what sets him apart.

It’s very hard to come across people like Zzero Sufuri, especially now that youngins are booking studio time to record whatever vulgar words or rhymes that comes to their heads. As such, we should give this lad credit not only for being creative but for also choosing to be different.

Zzero Sufuri; Songwriter, Artist; chuki na doo
Zzero Sufuri

For many years to come, people will still be listening to his songs because although he sings about random things like smoking weed or getting a rich girlfriend, the thought process behind it is really impeccable. He is a creative genius.

The truth is most new-age artists are just popular because they had good beats, if you take it away you’ll realize that their music is hogwash. On the other hand, I am sure you would listen to Zzero’s songs even if they didn’t have a beat or an instrumental. That should tell you a lot.

Listen to Zimenishika below.

Octopizzo Vs Khaligraph: Who will survive the new-age music revolution?

Truth be told, the new-age (new wave) Kenyan musicians are giving established musicians a run for their money, even the likes of Octopizzo and Khaligraph. Allow me to explain my line of thought.

Also read: New-age musicians are giving established artists nightmares!

At the end of the day, even if their music genres are different, they are competing for the same fanbase, which is you and I, and as you know there can only be one winner so it’s either the new age artists beat the established artists or vice versa.

Khaligraph Jones
Khaligraph Jones

Both Octopizzo and Khaligraph were doing well before the emergence of new age artists because they were both releasing street music i.e. songs that are in Sheng and relate to the struggles that the ordinary person goes through.

If you’re keen then I am sure you have noticed that Khaligraph has stayed the course. On the other hand, Octopizzo has veered off. In the recent past, he has has changed his style so much so that you would think that he no longer cares about his local fans.

Both Octopizzo and Khaligraph have been trying to surmount the pressure that they are getting from new-age artist and it got to a point where they bowed to pressure. The way I see it they had no choice.

Octopizzo
Khaligraph Jones

If you listen to Octopizzo’s Zikishika, there is a verse where he drops lamba lolo. In Leave Me Alone, Khaligraph pays homage to Zzero Sufuri and the likes. As the saying goes, if you can’t beat them join them.

This got me thinking, who between the two can survive the new-age music revolution because let’s be honest, these youngins have taken over. From the fans, to music streaming sites and YouTube to local TV and radio stations to gigs, all people waiting to consume is new-age musicians.

Between Octopizzo and Khaligraph Jones, who do you think can keep up with the new-age artists?

New-age musicians have killed Nigerian music and that’s a huge win

If you are keen, I’m sure you’ve noticed that Nigerian music is not as popular in Kenya as was the case a few years ago.

Gone are the days when local clubs, radio and TV stations would play one Nigerian song after the other and in my opinion that’s a huge win.

The focus has really shifted to local musicians, especially the new-age artist so much so that you could say that they helped in killing Nigerian music.

Ochunglo Family
Ochunglo Family

You see, the game really changed the day “Lamba Lolo” hitmakers Ethic appeared on the music scene more than one year ago.

In as much as the song was vulgar, many Kenyans couldn’t help but appreciate the fact that their style was different. It was out of the norm.

To add to that, it was very appealing and danceable (is this even a word?). Put simply, it was the kind of music that you could bump in the club.

Sooner or later, more individuals or groups  whose style was similar to Ethic emerged and before we knew it, most local clubs, radio and TV stations were playing their music back to back.

Boondocks Gang
Boondocks Gang

What I love most about the Kenyan music revolution is that the new-age artists are restless which means that unlike their predecessors, they are always in studio. As such, they are releasing hits back to back!

Kudos to Sailors Gang, Boondocks Gang, Ethic, Ochunglo Family, Rico Gang, Fat Boy Gwash, Zzero Sufuri etc.

I can only hope that one day we’ll get rid of Tanzanian music like we did with Nigerian music!

Zzero Sufuri is back with another banger titled ‘Kashikie’ and it’s pure flames (Video)

There’s no stopping for Zzero Sufuri! He’s back with a new jam barely a month after he treated us to Matisha and we are really feeling it!

Dubbed Kashikie, the new release is a collabo a upcoming artist who goes by the name Nuclear.

If you are from the hood then you are probably familiar with the word kushika. Well, if you are not them it means to smoke weed or chew miraa or having a good time (that’s the best explaination that I could offer).

Basically, this song is all about kushika with your friends and just generally having a good time.

Zzero Sufuri

I know what you are thinking, another song about doing drugs? If I were you, I’d not look at it that way, if you focus on the wordplay and rhymes by Zzero Sufuri and Nuclear then you’ll realize that this is a masterpiece.

Although he’s new in the game, I was really impressed by Nuclear’s delivery in this song, I definitely want to hear more of his music.

Of course, Zzero didn’t disappoint in this jam. I wasn’t expecting him to anyway.

The song was produced by Obwar Bwana and let’s be honest, he did a good job. The tempo of the beat is a bit slow but chances are that you won’t even notice it.

Watch Kashikie (Remix) below and tell us what you think.

Has Octopizzo lost relevance?

You might hate me for this but sometimes I get the feeling that Kenyan rapper Henry Ohanga, alias Octopizzo, has lost his relevance or he’s on the verge of losing it. Well, I could also be wrong.

Also read: Octopizzo Vs Khaligraph, whose music approach is better?

Admittedly, the Kibera-bred artist still makes good music but the truth is that is not what the mass market is consuming heavily. Put simply, it’s not the kind of music that most Kenyans are vibing to at the moment.

Octopizzo has released two songs since the year begun i.e. Babylon and Zikishika. While both songs were above par and well-executed, none of them was hit and we can debate this until the cows come home.

You could argue that the Oliel hit maker targets a particular niche with his music and he’s not interested in the mass market but the truth is that every artist wants his songs to go viral and garner millions of views on YouTube.

Octopizzo
Octopizzo

As we speak, Zikishika – which was released in April, has 810,000 views. Babylon – which was released in February has garnered only 780,000 views so far.

Now let’s compare this to Ethic who make music for the mass market. They have also released two songs this year namely Pandana and Figa. Pandana, which dropped in March has 2.3 million views, Figa which was released a fortnight ago has slightly above 1 million views.

If it is indeed true that numbers don’t lie, what does this tell you? What does it imply? The way I see it is that Octopizzo is losing or has lost relevance in the local music industry. It’s just what it is.

The emergence of new age-artists like Boondocks Gang, Ethic, Ochunglo Family, Rico Gang, Zzero Sufuri really tilted the scales. The mass market is consuming their music heavily at the moment and the sooner Kenyan artists realize this, the better!

We’ve seen the likes of The Kansoul working with these new age artists so that they can remain afloat so why can’t Octopizzo follow suit?

Zzero Sufuri Vs Ethic: Who’s really the baddest?

I’m sure you are aware that Zzero Sufuri and Ethic don’t see eye. Their beef is so bad that the former dissed the Lamba Lolo hit makers in his latest release dubbed Matisha.

Zzero Sufuri

In the song, there’s a part where Zzero says, “Si ni kumatisha, wako lamba lolo isha tubore, hujaskia ma morio flani wakali wametoka Dago si wamekam na ingine mbaya si unasikia vile inadunda bro.”

I’m not sure where their bad blood started because they don’t even come from the same area. Zzero is from Dagoretti while Ethic is from Eastlands, specifically Umoja. So this is not even about regional supremacy or is it?

Admittedly, both Ethic – which is made up of Rekless, Swat, Zilla and Seska – and Zzero Sufuri are all talented. However, their styles are as different as day and night. If you are a fan of both artists then I know you agree with me on this.

To a large extent, Ethic’s music is raunchy. Most of their songs are about sex, women’s rears, boobs and genitalia and what not. Put simply, they are willing to cross every line to become a household name.

Ethic Figa
Ethic

But that doesn’t mean that they are not talented. If you listen to Ethic’s song keenly, you’ll notice some good rhymes and wordplay. Perhaps this is why most people are hooked to their music despite the fact that it’s explicit.

On the other hand, Zzero Sufuri’s music is not raunchy at all. He infuses dancehall with a small element of mumble rap and the outcome is totally amazing. I’m not even exaggerating!

In as much as their styles are different, at the end of the day one of them must be better than the other. So, here’s my question. According to you, who is the baddest between Zzero Sufuri and Ethic?

Zzero Sufuri ridicules ‘Lamba Lolo’ hit makers Ethic in new release dubbed ‘Matisha’ (Video)

Zzero Sufuri has the dropped the video for Matisha and it’s a masterpiece ladies and gentlemen!

The audio was released sometime last year and as know, a song never really does well until it has a video, so he did the needful.

Matisha was released barely six weeks after he dropped the mega hit that is Zimenishika and as expected its also doing well. Maybe, just maybe, it might surpass the latter which has clocked 900,000 views on YouTube.

Zzero Sufuri

As we speak, the song has passed the 150,000 mark yet it’s barely a week since it was released.

Matisha simply means a good feeling, or better yet, a positive feeling. Basically, Zzero is encouraging his fans to do things that make them happy, whatever it is.

“Eeeh, ka umepiga look uko msafi, jo umetumatisha (matisha)  ka uko na kamutu, ni kazuri na kamematisha (matisha) mambo ya kuhanya biriganya bado umematisha eeeh, na kangoma kengine kanaitwa matisha (matisha).”

I hope you get it.

The best part about this song is where he blasts Ethic, the group that is behind the Lamba Lolo hit. I have a feeling that this might bring bad blood between them but wait, wouldn’t that be a good thing?

Anyway, he says, “Si ni kumatisha, wako lamba lolo isha tubore, hujaskia ma morio flani wakali wametoka Dago si wamekam na ingine mbaya si unasikia vile inadunda bro.”

The song was produced by Drisa and directed by Blackpearl.

Kenyan artists should be very worried about Zzero Sufuri

Kenyan artists, especially the new-age ones, should be worried sick about Zzero Sufuri. I can’t stress this enough.

Apart from the fact that his style is different, this young dancehall is getting popular by the day yet he’s not using explicity to grow his fan base. That is almost unheard of in Kenya!

Kenyan music has become so raunchy so much so that if you are not singing about sex, women’s rears, boobs or their genitalia then your people will disregrd your music. But you see, Zzero is not doing that.

Well, you could argue that he’s popular today because he gathered courage and released a song about smoking weed.

Zzero Sufuri

I’m not disputing that notion but let’s be honest, how many people can compose a song like Zimenishika? How many Kenyan songs are out there about smoking weed? How many of them garnered 900,000 views in 6 weeks?

The way I see it, Zzero Sufuri is very talented. He thinks outside the box. That way, he’s able to make music that can cut across audiences.

Chances are, most of the people who enjoy Zimenishika have no clue what a blunt looks like.

If you listen to his lyrics word for word, you’ll realize that he put a lot of thought when he was writing the song down. You’ll also notice that he has infused dancehall with mumble rap, isn’t Zzero Sufuri a genius?

One day, Kenyans will get tired of listening to explicit songs. It will be too much since every new artist thinks it is the only way to get known.

Believe you me, that day is just around the corner. The lamba lolo, geuka nikubeng and wamlambez singers should brace themselves.

When that day comes, the likes of Zzero Sufuri will be left standing because he’s actually talented!

New-age musicians are so unpredictable and that’s the beauty of music

Gone are the days when every song was about hitting on fine ladies in a club, love, checking out ladies in the hood or just getting wasted.

Kenyan music has become so diverse in the last few years  so much so that there’s a song literally about anything that you can think of.

I might have some reservations about new-age musicians and how they package their songs. However, the fact is that they have played and continue to play a huge role in diversifying the Kenyan sound.

Unlike their older peers, new-age musicians are more spontaneous. An idea is hurriedly conceived, the next minute they are in studio recording the song.

Ochunglo Family

Before you know it, the song is out and getting good reviews on social media as well as music streaming sites.

If you listen to Ethic, Ochunglo Family, Boondocks Gang, Zzero Sufuri, G-Rock and the likes explaining how their hit songs came to be, they all say that they were just vibing in the house and viola!

Perhaps, this unpredictability is what the Kenyan music industry needs. Think of it like this, the main reason people like Willy Paul are successful is because you never know what to expect of them.

One minute he has a gospel song that really glorifies The Lord, the next he’s getting naughty in a music video with Nandy.

Unpredictability is what makes music beautiful. For instance, Sauti Sol members have a new song where they are singing in French, Lingala and Kinyarwanda. Who would have thought?

New-age musicians have realized that impulsiveness works in the Kenyan music industry. That’s why you’ll find them singing about anything.

From matatus, smoking weed, dustbins, bedroom matters, women’s rears, KDF mandanzis, you name it. I’m sure you also agree that this unpredictability is good to a certain extent.

However, once in a while they find themselves in trouble because let’s be honest, you can’t really sing about anything and everything in a country where there are laws.

Zzero Sufuri’s ‘Zimenishika’ is a masterpiece which should be banned (Video)

If at all there’s any new-age musician that I hold in high regard then it is Zzero Sufuri. Suffice to say, this young dancehall artist is very talented.

The first time I listened to any of his songs was in January this year. I came across a song that he had done with a lad know as Kadu as I was trawling the internet one one gloomy day.

The song titled Wase Wase was so good that I had it on repeat for the rest of that day. His style was different. I don’t have a word in mind that best describes it. All I remember is that I kept hitting the replay button.

Zzero released two  other songs after Wase Wase and then, he dropped a jam that will go down in the memories of music fans as one the best songs in 2019. It’s so good ladies and gentlemen.

Dubbed Zimenishika, the song is about smoking weed and the feeling around it. However, if you listen keenly, you’ll appreciate the fact that the lyrical flow was well thought-out.

As you listen to the song, especially the chorus, you’ll notice that it has a small element of mumble rap. Some of the words are almost incomprehensible.

Like the part where he says, “Kiko kwa kichwa kimejificha si ni kimbichwa yoh, si ni kienyewe kiko kwa kichwa kimejificha yoh, kiko kwa kichwa kimejificha si ni kimbichwa si ni kienyewe kiko kwa kichwa kimejificha juu ni kimbichwa eeh.”

Zzero Sufuri

This is my favourite part in Zimenishika. It’s a tongue twister of sorts. I always try to sing along when I’m listening to the song and fail terribly. You should try it too. I mean, why not?

The song’s beat is also superb. It’s a reggae beat with a hint of dancehall. It complements Zzero’s flow. It puts you in his shoes as he was recording the song so much so that you’ll find yourself using your TV remote as a microphone.

The video for Zimenishika was released a few days ago and I have a feeling that someone will one day wake up and ban it, just like they did with Alvindo’s Taka Taka. Anyway, I hope they’ll also see it as a work of art.

On the other hand, I’m hoping the song gets banned so that the world can see this great artist from Kenya called Zzero Sufuri. As you know, banning a song only makes it popular.

Watch Zimenishika below and tell us what you think.
