Consumer Federation of Kenya Sues Stanbic Yetu Concert Organizers

The Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) has filed a lawsuit against the organizers of the Stanbic Yetu concert featuring American boy band Boyz II Men. The lawsuit, which was filed under a certificate of urgency at the Milimani Law Courts, names Stanbic Bank Kenya, Radio Africa Events, and Homeboyz Entertainment Limited as the respondents.

Cofek is seeking compensation for consumers who were dissatisfied with the concert, which was marred by poor organization and technical problems. The lawsuit alleges that the organizers of the concert breached their contractual obligations to consumers by failing to provide a satisfactory event.

Justice Lawrence N. Mugambi has ordered that the respondents be served with the lawsuit within 14 days. He has also set a mention date of July 24, 2023, for the case.

The lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal challenges facing the organizers of the Stanbic Yetu concert. In May, a group of concertgoers filed a lawsuit against the organizers, alleging that they were misled about the quality of the event.

The Stanbic Yetu concert was held at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi on June 11, 2023. The concert was promoted as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to see Boyz II Men perform live in Kenya. However, many concertgoers were disappointed with the event, which was marred by long queues, poor sound quality, and technical problems.

The lawsuit filed by Cofek is a significant development in the saga surrounding the Stanbic Yetu concert. The lawsuit could have far-reaching implications for the organizers of the concert, and it could also serve as a warning to other event organizers about the importance of providing a satisfactory experience for consumers.

Older artists make a comeback in Kenyan music industry in 2023

A new trend is emerging in the Kenyan music industry in 2023, with older artists making a comeback. This is according to the latest data from the Swedish digital music platform Spotify.

Spotify’s data shows that there has been a spike in streams of music by older artists in Kenya in recent months. This is likely due to a number of factors, including nostalgia for the past, the rise of social media, and the increasing popularity of streaming services.

One example of this trend is the Boyz II Men concert that took place in Nairobi last month. The concert was a sell-out, and Spotify saw a significant increase in streams of the band’s music in the weeks leading up to the event.

Another example is the rise of old Skull artists on streaming services. Skull was a popular Kenyan record label in the 1980s and 1990s, and its artists are now enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to streaming.

There are a number of reasons why older artists are making a comeback in Kenya. One reason is nostalgia. Many people in Kenya grew up listening to these artists, and they are now looking back on their childhoods with fondness.

Another reason is the rise of social media. Older artists are now able to connect with their fans on platforms like Twitter and Facebook, which helps to keep their music in the public eye.

Finally, the increasing popularity of streaming services has also helped to boost the popularity of older artists. Streaming services make it easy for people to discover new music, and they also allow people to listen to music that they may not have been able to find in the past.

It remains to be seen whether this trend will continue in the long term. However, for now, it seems that older artists are enjoying a new lease of life in the Kenyan music industry.

Stanbic Bank addresses Boyz 2 Men concert lawsuit rumours

The sponsor of the Stanbic Yetu Festival, Stanbic Bank, has spoken out after threats of legal action stemming from concerns against the American boy band Boyz II Men’s performance on June 10, 2023, in Nairobi.

The Festival didn’t live up to expectations, as stated in a Stanbic Bank statement after taking note of fan criticism.

“We acknowledge that key elements of the show fell short of meeting the standards leading to disappointment among music fans who attended the concert. To this end, we have engaged our event organization partner, the Radio Africa Group, with a view of identifying the root cause of the issues presented.

We want to provide assurance that a comprehensive investigation is underway and an events report will be shared with the sponsors to help inform the organization of future events to ensure that the experience of all attendees meets the expected high standards.”
