When Gilad Millo debuted on the Kenyan entertainment scene circa 2015 with Unajua featuring Wendy Kimani, he left many music fans, including yours truly, totally amazed.
Despite the fact that most of us had never heard of him before, we were really impressed that a mzungu had sang in Swahili and aced it.
To date, Unajua is one of the most classic love ballads from Kenya. Where is the lie?
Gilad, who served as a diplomat between 2003 and 2005, went on to release songs such as Sema Milele, Rangi Ya Bahari, Salama, Nakuahidi, Usiende, Mapenzi, Fire, Asante just to name a few.
Before we knew it, he had become household name never mind the fact that he does not understand the Swahili language well.
His consistency has also played a huge role in making him one of the most sought-after artists in Kenya.
That aside, if you are keen, you’ll notice that he varies his style with every subsequent release.
Some of his songs are soulful ballads, the kind that can make you tear up as you listen to them. However, others have a Kapuka touch that will make you dance rather than emotional.
Take for instance his latest release dubbed Kawaida Guy and Fire, a collabo he released with Deal in 2018. It’s almost as if the songs were done by two different people.
Perhaps, our local artists should borrow a leaf from this Israeli born and bred singer! After all, he’s living proof that passion is all it takes to succeed.
