Kenyans can’t contain themselves after Jamaican dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel has been released from prison.

The 48-year-old artist, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was convicted of murder in 2014 and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, his conviction was overturned by the Privy Council in London earlier this year due to a juror misconduct.

After the conviction was quashed, Jamaican authorities were faced with the decision of whether to retry Kartel. On Wednesday, the Jamaican Court of Appeal ruled against a retrial, citing factors such as the passage of time, the deteriorating health of the accused, and the challenges of reassembling witnesses and evidence.

Kartel, known for hits like “Clarks” and “Ramping Shop,” has always maintained his innocence. His case has been a subject of intense public interest in Jamaica and beyond.

The decision to release Kartel has sparked mixed reactions, with some celebrating his freedom and others expressing concerns about the victim and the justice system.

Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel has been released from prison after serving 13 years for a murder conviction. Jamaica’s Court of Appeal decided against a retrial, citing Kartel’s deteriorating health and the psychological and financial impact on him.

Kartel’s defense highlighted his severe condition, including a swollen neck and face, which has worsened over time. His release has sparked widespread celebration among fans and supporters worldwide.

The court also freed Kartel’s co-accused, Shawn ‘Storm’ Campbell, Andre St John, and Kahira Jones. Several factors influenced the decision, including the unavailability of witnesses, missing trial exhibits, and Kartel’s declining health. The court noted that the prosecution failed to adequately account for witness availability and that the resources expended during the initial trial placed a significant burden on the court system.

Following the news, fans gathered outside the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in downtown Kingston, chanting “Free World Boss” as they awaited Kartel’s release. Authorities had cordoned off the area to manage the large crowd and ensure security.

A Jamaican judge has ruled that dancehall star Vybz Kartel, along with two co-defendants, must remain in jail as they await a possible retrial for murder.

This decision comes after Kartel and his co-accused had their 2014 murder convictions overturned by the Privy Council in March due to juror misconduct. The case is now back with Jamaica’s Court of Appeal, which will determine if a retrial is necessary.

Kartel and his co-defendants have consistently maintained their innocence in the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Williams was reportedly killed for allegedly failing to return firearms given to him by Kartel.

His trial, lasting 64 days, was one of the lengthiest in Jamaican history, resulting in Kartel being ordered to serve a minimum of 35 years in prison, later reduced to 32-and-a-half years.

During the trial, it was revealed that the victim, Clive Williams, and another man were given firearms by Kartel for safekeeping. When they didn’t return them, they were called to Kartel’s house and allegedly attacked.

While the house was burned down, Clive Williams’ body was never found.

Kartel and his co-accused, Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John, maintained their innocence throughout.

In their appeal before the Privy Council, the highest court of appeal in Jamaica and other Commonwealth countries, they argued that a juror accused of bribery wasn’t removed from the trial, compromising the fairness of the verdict.

The council ruled that allowing the juror to remain was “fatal to the safety of the convictions” and a violation of the defendants’ right to a fair trial.

While other issues were raised, the panel focused on the serious nature of the bribery allegations in dismissing the guilty verdicts.

Vybz Kartel’s global fame has seen him launch various ventures, including shoe lines, alcohol brands, and condoms. He was also the first dancehall artist to have his reality TV show, “Teacha’s Pet.”
