Maddox (Boondocks Gang) on his new single 'Raerae'

In the jam Raerae Maddox has come up with a very creative thing as he is also working with the best. When we talk of Ghetto anthems, then Boondocks Gang takes the day.

What is the Raerae hype all about?

Without even trying to get the meaning of the song, the first line tells it all. In Raerae Maddox and his team are describing a sex scene. Honestly I do not understand who told this musicians it is only sex that sells.

Though the Raerae jam is in Sheng’ language, it is easy to get some of the words to send the actual message. In this case, you’ll realize that even the use of drugs is mentioned.

Deep into what Maddox is trying to tell us from the lyrics is where the whole truth lies. In the chorus, the words Raerae are repetitive as they describe the title of the song.

Uwachome na kingoto,  Riets zimeshika cheki design fulani Niko jaba nimechonga tu hii majani Na kiwada na kichaser tu ni Konyagi.

Although majority of their songs are more of weed songs, this time Maddox and his team The Kansoul and Arrif are now talking about khat, alcohol and sex.

Nina tingi na nunu imepigwa radi Unapenda kanuthu ama muratish Unapenda mandugu uvue panty Unapenda kiluku uvue shati. Here the girl is being intoxicated so as to be able to participate in sex when she is high.

It is a good thing to promote talent but this is not what I will call talent. This all crap and women are not sexual tools like the Maddox, Arrif and The Kansoul show.

Music needs to be sensible. In conclusion, all factors considered Raerae gets a rating of 4/10.

The Kansoul hit-back with ‘Rudi Saloon’ featuring Rosa.

After long time silence this time The Kansoul serves the fans a hit song ‘Rudi saloon’. The jam is quite an easy love song, in which they give a shout out to the LEO’s Salon and Spa. The video was well done, in relation to the title. The lyrical flow and the instrumentation is also in conjunction to the mood song creates.

What is ‘Rudi Saloon’ all about?

TheKansoul introduce the jam with some good psych, ‘Yeah Yeah EH EH Yeah EH.’ Such a smart way to capture attention and also create a psych mood. The artists goes ahead to sing about the case of a lady giving herself up for the night, and how its going to be lit to an extent of getting off her weave. It elaborates what happens in the day to day raving live. Whereby party girls have fun to an extent of over drinking and thus pass out.

The Kansoul thus goes ahead to the chorus part to sing after a number of happenstances for the night. Thus captures the theme, ‘Baby Rudi Saloooooon (Saloooon) Baby Rudi Saloon itabidi utarudi salon.’ The chorus comes in with much repetition which, we can term as emphasis. Should we assume it’s cause many don’t change or clean weaves frequently?

The Kansoul hit-back with 'Rudi Saloon' featuring Rosa.

Lyrical flow

Rudi Saloon continues the lyrical flow with how the party is going to be, with beautiful girls and expensive drinks on the tables. ‘ Nawaroro Wareeeeeeeesh (Waresh resh resh resh) Na Machupa Expe (Ching) Dem yako meza yangu express.’ It explains the curvy shape on the bed under the duvet, a bit naughty but sorry to the boy friend thus, ‘Nasema iza man (Man).’ It keads the night to turning off the radio and lighting, ‘Kamenje.’

Rosa takes the lead, praising the melanin her. ‘i’m the real real deal,Pussy melanin She sings for one to get off her weave, he must be good in the gym cause he’s never been with a girl like her. ‘lza man Chali yako akijipa man Atang’oa hii weave itabidi arudi gym,  Cuz he never ever been with a girl like me.’

The jam closes by narrating how there’s a sensual. Thus needs a lady who can make him happy to an extent of taking, ‘kukumanga’ which is a known viagra. ‘ Mi na manzi naingia mitini Anadai atanivunja mugongo Anapenda zile kubwa kaa muhugo.’  ‘Usiku mzima huyu manzi nilimkuta llikuwa noma juu aliamka na matuta.’ What a way of closing the jam and the night, indeed with the ‘matuta’ there’s no option other than ‘kurudi saloon’.

Rudi Saloon comes in with an inner turn on of a party mood. Such a fan way after some long time silence, thus a good comeback banger. To The Kansoul and Rosa get a rating of 7/10.

Ochungulo family aping the Kansoul?

New age music has gained it popularity in recent months and so far it has been well received.Further more groups keep cropping up on a daily basis.

On the other hand there are those that have clearly acquired their niche in the Kenyan Music industry. I am talking about the likes of Ochungulo Family.

The Kaa na mama yako hit makers are a team to watch  out for. Why? This is because they have done so well.

However for some time I have noticed similarity between their music and that of the Kansoul.

…Aping the Kansoul?

The genge masters, the Kansoul are definitely a force to reckon with. They even have been a support system for these young lads.

Ochungulo family have enjoyed the chance of collaboration with the Kansoul in some of their songs like, Na Iwake remix. A song that geared their popularity in the Kenyan Music scene. For that we appreciate the talent  of the team.

However, since then if you are keen enough you would   notice the similarity between the Kansoul’s music and Ochungulo family.

Not hating but their style is quite similar, to the extent that at some point as you listen to Nellythegoon’s style of rap you would easily mistake him for Mejja.

Their beats too seem to lean to the Kansoul’s style of making music.

To make matters more interesting in their latest song Kong’o video, their way they did it is so typical a style by The Kansoul.

Having Tumblers filled with booze as props and so on this is a complete replica of what the genge  boys do.

So I will ask again is Ochungulo family aping the Kansoul?Well you guess is good as mine. Yes I feel they are.

Clearly that is not so good especially for a now celebrated crop of musicians.

The “Kansoul” of Elders of Kenyan Anthem Music

The Kansoul, is a Kenyan afro-pop, Genge group formed by Mejja, Kid Kora and Madtraxx in the year 2014 in Nairobi. Before teaming up, the team worked as individual or solo artists.

They had their wins at different levels before they decided to join hands and work as team coming up with the new title the ‘Kansoul.

As individuals

Indivualy they were doing so well doing genge music-Genge seems to be Kenya’s longest standing sound.

For instance Mejja , He started off well in 2008 with his first hit ‘Kwani Jana Kuliendaje” produced by Clemmo  after a struggle with his music. He is known for other big hits such as Niko Poa (Barua),Landlord, twenzetu among others.

Madtraxx in his part also had  a success in his career with big hits like Skamaress, Get down , Ita waiter among others.

Kid kora in his part is a producer and a singer at the same time.He started off as protégé of his brother Bamzigi and Madtraxx in 2007.He did not know much about Music but says Madtraxx was the biggest contributing factor to his growth in production.Did you know he was the one created Madtraxx’s hit Skamaress? Now you know.

Do we miss them as solo artists? That is a story for another day.

Career together

Working together, the Kansoul turned out to be more successful with anthems that redefined Kenyan Genge music. How?They released their first track, DaboTap which was a big  hit both locally and internationally.

The song gained popularity  in that, their collaborated effort  won them a number of accolades and nominations in the process.

With successful tours in Africa , the UK and the US, they managed to put a humble face to be relevant in the ever changing music scene.

Support for New Talent

If for anything, The Kansoul can be crowned as the “Kansoul of elders” when it comes to supporting young talent. Why?

In the past year, the controversial upcoming music group Ethic managed to feature the Kansoul in their 2nd Hit ‘Position”. The song was able to get 3.3 million views. The video quality too was far much better than their(Ethic) first song lamba lolo.

Other teams they have worked with include, Ochunglo Family of the ‘na Iwake song” remix and Tribless of Kufa juu among others.

When hip hop, Kapuka, genge and rap is mentioned, this talented group is bound to be mentioned.

They are bound to be a part of that list because of what they have been able to achieve musically in the short time they have been together and their prowess of merging all this genres together.
