Wanjiku’s Journey

Teacher Wanjiku’s journey through comedy hasn’t been an easy one. Sharing a throwback photo of herself and Sleepy David on Instagram, she narrated;

He is aggressive and very focused and today he has managed to have his own tv show called ‘Shinning stars’ On KTN. We have grown as artists and he really has my back! I was trolled and abused on social media trended for a nearly a month. No Tv station wanted anything to do with me, doors were closed on my face. Lakini Mungu ni nani????? I learnt that when someone tells you ‘We want to put up a show for you’ think twice my friend think twice! ???? Kenyan comedian, content creator and actress, Teacher Wanjiku, whose real name is Carolyne Wanjiku Tharau, is one of the best female comedians in the country. Her character of Wanjiku the Teacher is characterized with her made up Kikuyu accent.

After sharing a photo of herself on Instagram when she was still in school, most people have commented and reacted with laugh emojis.

” Huyu ni nani?”

” I have told you people many times!!! Money answereth all.”

After leaving Churchill Show, Teacher Wanjiku made her debut on Citizen TV. She then took a break from live performance to go have her baby. She came back with a one man show at National theatre in 2016 and was a success.

Wanjiku has been brand ambassador for a number brands including Airtel, Airtel Money, Unilevers Blue Band, Honda, Bata, USAID, National Bank and so many others. She became a Dettol Ambassador after former ambassadors Julie Gichuru, Lulu Hassan and Patience Ozokwor. She has also worked in the office of the president.

I still see her doing comedy with comedian Mammito and she’s still got the hang of it. Old is indeed gold.

Sometimes in 2014, Teacher Wanjiku quit Churchill Show to start her own comedy show on Citizen TV. But unfortunately her show wasn’t a success, it was probably the biggest flop in the history of Kenyan television.

Citizen TV cancelled Teacher Wanjiku’s show just after the pilot episode because of poor ratings. The comedian was out in the cold for a long time before she finally made a major comeback on Churchill Show.

Teacher Wanjiku talked about her absence from comedy during a recent interview with Massawe Japanni on Radio Jambo.

“Being away for some time has helped me maintain my brand as a comedian. Understanding my brand and what I am telling my audience helps,” said Teacher Wanjiku.

Adding that;

“You have to keep pushing yourself in the industry. I am original and I work very hard for my content before I get into the studio. I sometimes leave my audience to control me. Always allow people to criticize you. If not, you will not manage.”

Misconception

Teacher Wanjiku also opened up about the challenges she and other female comedians face in comedy industry;

“Most people do not believe that a woman is able to make people laugh. You have to prove to them that you are better than even the men. There are fewer females in the comedy industry.”

Teacher Wanjigu’s signature look is by far not a reflection of her beauty. The top female comedian can look really gorgeous when she decides to do so.

Teacher Wanjiku always wears a pink spot dress when she goes about her work making people laugh. The not so cool dressing style has become her signature look.
