Kenyans don’t give their musicians enough support

Local music rarely transcends borders and to be honest, it’s partly our fault as Kenyans. We don’t appreciate our artists enough. Maybe things would be different if we did, who knows?

Stella Mwangi

Artists from Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and other African countries have been making headways in the international music scene because of the support that they enjoy from their country mates.

This support motivates them to set bigger goals and pursue them. Perhaps this explains why their music industries are way ahead of Kenya and from the look of things it will take us time to catch up.

You could argue that local musicians are not doing enough and that they are not making music which can be played outside Kenya. That notion is wrong and the complete opposite of what is really happening.

If you are keen enough, you’ll notice that the likes of Sauti Sol, Khaligraph, King Kaka, MDQ, Victoria Kimani, Octopizzo, Stella Mwangi, Blinky Bill, have been working hard to show the world that Kenya has so much to offer.

Billy Bill

However, their efforts neither here nor there because we don’t support or encourage them. It’s almost as if they are making music for the sake of it. This should not be the case.

At any given point in time, the biggest song in Kenya is always from Tanzania, Nigeria or some other African country. It’s rarely our own music. We are consuming foreign music at the expense of local music and this is wrong.

If you look at the biggest Kenyan concerts the last few years, you’ll realize that the main performer was either an international act or from Nigeria, Tanzania and the likes. Why is this so?

By giving local artists a chance to be the headline acts of such big concerts, we’ll show them that we have a lot of faith in them. This way, they will be have the confidence to chase even bigger goals.

Another way we could support them is by buying their music and merchandise, showing up for their concerts, sharing their new music releases and encouraging them every chance we get. What would it cost you to send a tweet to your favourite artist telling them to keep pushing? Absolutely nothing!

Victoria Kimani Vs Stella Mwangi: Who is making Kenyans proud in the diaspora?

There are many musicians who are flying the country’s flag high in the diaspora. They are showing the world that Kenya has a lot more to offer other than athletes.  They are getting people who are outside the country to appreciate Kenyan music.

Of the many musicians in the diaspora, two really stand out because of the great feats that they have achieved and they are; Victoria Kimani and Stella Mwangi. These sultry lasses are not only representing the country well but also making us proud.

In as much as both songstresses are gifted, we still want to find out who between them has done more for the country by selling our music and sound to foreign audiences i.e. who is making Kenyans extremely proud in the diaspora between Victoria Kimani and Stella Mwangi?

According to you, who between Victoria Kimani and Stella Mwangi is making Kenyans proud in the diaspora?

Listen to their collabo dubbed Number One below.

Victoria Kimani has teamed up with Stella Mwangi on this new banger that you’ll absolutely love

I’m a huge fan of Stella Mwangi, alias STL. Of course, just like many people, I first came to know of her when she released Take It Back circa 2007. Somehow, she managed to retain me as a fan to date with her subsequent releases.

To some extent, I also appreciate Victoria Kimani’s music. I might have some reservations about her or how she carries herself but I generally think that she’s worth her salt. She makes good music and that’s all that matters.

Being good fans of both Victoria and STL, you can just imagine how excited I was when I learnt that they have a new collabo together. If you are just learning of this, please take a seat.

The new jam is titled Number One. Forget about all the other songs out there with the same title, this is the real deal. No kidding! Also, to all the musicians out there, please think of other song titles. This one has been exhausted. I digress.

The new song does not have a video yet (maybe they are not even planning to shoot one) so we’ll just talk about the beautiful audio that is almost clocking 10,000 views on YouTube.

Victoria Kimani

First, the song has a very catchy beat. I was not expecting anything less seeing as it was produced Tuc who is one of the best in the music business not only in Nigeria but Africa.

I don’t mean to exaggerate but it is one of the most memorable beats I have listened to in a long time. You’ll find yourself swaying to the beat as you listen to this banger.

Number One is a feel good song. Actually, it’s a motivational song. The message behind it is that you should work hard and not be afraid of people who are jealous of your success. At least, that’s what I understood.

Victoria’s delivery was off the hook as expected. She has this melodic voice that you just want to keep listening to. You’ll hit the replay button at least a couple of times because of her smooth vocals.

Stella Mwangi

However, I was most excited about STL’s part. She always has this bad ass vibe that I appreciate or like. Probably this is why she one of the best female emcees out there but you already knew that, didn’t you?

Listening to her part gave me the same feeling I get when I listened to Take It Back. What struck me about the song is the outro and it’s not what STL said, it’s about how she said it.

She says “Stella Mwangi, Victoria Kimani up in this b******ch. Hahaha. Kenya stand up!” That outro will stick in your mind, trust me.

Listen to Number One below and tell us what you think.

Rapper STL recently left Team Mafisi scrambling for a plan after introducing her younger sister.

STL comes from a family of three and was raised by her mother Perpetua Mwangi in Norway after their dad, Jeff Mwangi Kwirikia, was killed.

Mwangi, a former political activist, died in Dal Ullensaker, Norway on January 31 2012 after being knocked down by a hit-and-run car whose driver has since been charged with manslaughter.

Cherished

Since then not much about STL’s family has been out until recently when she took to social media to wish her younger sister Cherrie Mwangi a happy  birthday.
“Mom raised 3 daughters. I’m second born. Help me wish last born a Happyyy birthday!!??? Even tho U @cheriemwangi get on my nerves sometimes, I would take bullets 4u anyday☠ Love you ❤ #scorpioseason” she posted.

Speaking during a recent interview with Nation, STL expressed no regret for showing too much skin when she was asked about her dressing following Akothee’s drama.

“I actually don’t follow up on all the negative comments. I stay away from negative energy because I know my intentions for doing what I do come from a good place. If I am hot, I am hot, why should I wear sweaters? These are people’s opinions. I am open to constructive criticism from my mum, my producers, or my team because I know they want the best from me. However, out here, you never really know people’s intentions. I have instructed my team never to tell me any negative stuff people are saying about me; I don’t want to know,” said STL.

Shout out from The Rock

STL also opened up about getting shout out from Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock.  The Hollywood actor commended the Kenyan rapper after her song was featured as a soundtrack on HBO’s series “Ballers.”

“I was actually expecting a shout out from Tommy Hilfiger. He has used two of my songs on repeat on his runways and has reached out to me privately. Getting it from “The Rock” was really overwhelming, it just shows how humble he is. In Hollywood, celebrities typically associate with people at their level yet he put me on his platforms. When we were recording the song about two years ago we actually joked with my producers, “What if The Rock actually recognised us for putting his name in the lyrics?” STL opened up about getting shout out from The Rock.

“No, but my producers met his girlfriend when they were in LA and she loved my work. That is actually how this whole thing began,” said STL when asked whether she had met The Rock in person.

Akothee’s dressing code and dancing style during her concert in London sparked uproar in Kenya. Female rapper Stella Mwangi aka STL has done the same thing Akothee did.

Akothee thrilled fans with her raunchy dances that included lifting one of her legs up high while wearing a body suit. The mother of five paraded her nether regions during her performance at Wembley stadium.

Thirst trap

STL left her male fans salivating when she paraded hectares of her thighs on social media. The Norwegian-based Kenyan rapper lifted up her skirt to expose everything underneath in a photo she posted on her IG.
