Hearing on Sharon Otieno’s murder is postponed while Obado’s co-accused laments family loss

The murder trial of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, regarding the killing of university student Sharon Otieno, has been adjourned to May 6, 2024. This adjournment was requested by a co-accused, Caspal Obiero, who tragically lost his wife and child in a road accident.

During the hearing, Obiero’s defense lawyer, Meso Ogada, explained that the accident occurred in March 2024, and the burial was delayed due to financial constraints and Luo cultural rituals associated with the loss of a spouse.

Both Ogada and co-counsel Elisha Ongoya requested the court’s indulgence, citing Obiero’s inability to participate in the proceedings as he prepared for the burial. The prosecution did not oppose the request.

In response, Magistrate Cecilia Githua granted the adjournment, expressing sympathy for Obiero’s loss. The judge ordered the resumption of the trial on May 6.

The case involves Obado, his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo, and clerk Obiero, who are accused of the murder of Sharon and her unborn child on September 3, 2018, in HomaBay County. DNA test results revealed that Obado was the father of Sharon’s unborn child.

All defendants remain out on bond pending further proceedings.

Taxi Driver Jackson Gombe to Face Cross-Examination in Sharon Otieno Murder Case

The cross-examination of taxi driver Jackson Gombe in the murder case of Sharon Otieno will continue today before High Court Judge Cecilia Githua.

Last week, Gombe was put to task by defense lawyers Rodgers Sagana and Kioki Kilukumi to explain inconsistencies in his evidence. One of the inconsistencies was Gombe’s claim that he had left his phone charging at a shop in Migori when he started his journey to Oyugis. However, call data records produced in court show that Gombe’s phone was active from 4pm to midnight, and was captured roaming in different locations.

Sagana asked Gombe to explain how his phone could have been active if he had left it at a shop. Gombe said that he did not write that part of his statement, and that he may not have been paying attention to the details when he signed it. He maintained that he had left his phone at a shop in Migori, and that the shop keeper or his brother was attending to it.

The cross-examination is expected to continue today, and it is likely that Gombe will be asked to provide further details about his movements on the day of Sharon Otieno’s murder.

Here are some additional details about the case:

  • Sharon Otieno was a 26-year-old law student who was found dead in a thicket in Kodera forest in September 2018.
  • She was allegedly abducted by Jackson Gombe and two other men, who were working for former Migori governor Okoth Obado.
  • Obado is accused of masterminding Sharon Otieno’s murder, and he is currently on trial.
  • The case has attracted widespread attention in Kenya, and it has been seen as a test of the country’s commitment to fighting gender-based violence.

Critics

Some critics however dismissed the group claiming they had ulterior motive, some claimed they were the so called ‘paid professional mourners’ who were included in the fake burial budget.

Supremacy battle

But now there is a supremacy battle that could possibly see Sharon’s burial postponed. A former late councilor is to be laid to rest on the same day that Sharon is supposed to be buried.

Both families want the media attention and don’t want their respective funeral to be overshadowed. This situation has caused tension between the two families which hail from the same village in Homa Bay County.

“There is confusion on who should be laid to rest first between Otieno and the former councilor but we maintain that she will be laid to rest on Friday next week,” family spokesperson Pablo Anyanga told Nation.

Migori governor killed Sharon Otieno because she was cheating on him with his own son?

All preliminary evidence points Migori governor Okoth Obado to the brutal murder of Sharon Otieno. The governor’s aide Michael Oyamo is the key suspect in the murder and he is helping police with their investigations.

Nation journalist Barrack Oduor, who was with Sharon when they were abducted, confirmed that the deceased was pregnant with the governor’s baby.

In an interview with NTV, Oduor reveals that governor Obado was pestering Sharon to terminate the pregnancy against her will to keep it.

Obado and son shared Sharon?

Oduor further discloses that Sharon told him that her relationship with Obado turned sour after the governor discovered that she had been chatting with his own son.

The Migori governor accused Sharon of having an affair with his own son and he started neglecting her. The Nation journalist contacted Obado through John Mbadi so as to get his side of the story.

The governor would not deny or confirm the allegations but he told the Nation journalist that his personal assistant Michael Oyamo would handle the issue.

And the issue was handled by Sharon Otieno being murdered while Nation journalist cheated death by jumping off a moving car when he was abducted alongside Sharon.

MPs react

Homa Bay Woman rep Gladys Wanga and her Migori counterpart Pamela Odhiambo have called on girls to focus on education and avoid shortcuts following Sharon’s death.

“Our girls…this must be a lesson to you…it doesn’t matter where you come from but be contented with what you have and focus…leave alone the sponsors and focus.  It is a very sad morning, this act must be condemned. This is the true test for the DCI because it is alleged that the high and mighty are involved. It does not matter who you are, nobody deserves to take a life …we want the real person behind this matter arrested and charged with the murder of Sharon,” said Wanga.
