Sharon Otieno, the Rongo University student killed in a gruesome manner last year leaving the country in shock, has now been buried for three months but her killers are yet to be prosecuted.
Otieno’s parents Melida Auma and Douglas Otieno recently shared with Daily Nation that they are still grieving following the death of their daughter who was seven months pregnant. Migori Governor Okoth Obado was charged with the murder and was released on a Sh 5 million bail by High Court Judge Jessie Lesiit.
“My daughter’s death should not be in vain. It aches our hearts that things suddenly went silent, but we hope justice will finally be done and her killers will be made to pay for their sins,” Auma said.
Sharon’s mother in the interview said that it was ironic how Obado was asking Kenyans to pray for him after the charges. Melida argued that it’s them who need the prayers since they lost loved ones.
“Who is praying for us especially Sharon’s orphaned children? Why should he be prayed for before us? Our spirits are still very low and we are left to wonder why he did not call for prayers for a girl he claimed to have loved,” she said.
Pain
Sharon’s father said he visits her grave regularly but his wife has not visited the grave site since the burial as it pains her.
“I usually wake up early at times at 4 am to just go visit her grave. It satisfies me to know she and her baby lie beneath the soil,” Otieno said.
