“Kenyan promoters should get serious!” Richy Haniel weighs in recent flopped concerts

Richard Haniel Mashua, known to many as Richy Haniel, has faulted event promoters for the flopped events in the last 2 months where artists refused to go on stage despite being in the venue.

Speaking exclusively to Ghafla, Richy Haniel, who is the brains behind the biggest YouTube music channel in Kenya, explained that the people who were behind Gengetone Festival and NaiFest were newcomers.

As such, it was almost certain that they would face challenges because they do not know much about events planning neither do they have enough connections.

Richy Haniel went on to add that most promoters are shady and it was right for the artists not to go on stage because the former will get used to them.

“They can’t perform. These promoters will assure you that they will pay you after the event but they won’t. If you go on stage without getting money and start looking for the promoter after they event, they don’t pick calls,” he said.

According to him, dubious promoters are the reason why artists who are from outside the country ask for the full pay even before they land.

I also asked him about Richy Haniel musical journey and he told me that he released his first song in 2012 but it was not until 2015 that he started doing music professionally. He has around 10 songs to date.

You’ve probably heard his jam with Mbogi Genje dubbed Wamocho. He told this writer that the Kidungi hitmakers have been his acquaintances for a long time so he just pitched the idea to them and they agreed to work together.

Later on, they asked Mejja to drop a verse and that is how Wamocho was born. They later shot the video and as we speak the song is currently at 1 million views.

His thoughts on Gengetone? Richy Haniel explained that although COVID-19 had impacted the sound because of the closure of clubs, it is still very much alive.

The song titled Wamocho, which means drinking and partying or hustling hard, has already garnered 80,000 views on YouTube yet it’s only 15 hours since it was release. It’s likely to cross 100K when the day ends.

Richy Haniel revealed that, this the jam, which is the first release from his forthcoming album Rich Secrets was first recorded in July 2020 after meeting Mbogi Genje . He then brought Mejja on board.

This jam is a fusion of Kapuka and dancehall. Believe you me, I’ve been listening to this jam on repeat since it came out and I still love it.

Mbogi Genje

As expected, Mbogi Genje really came through on Wamocho. Their style of using Sheng words that are unknown to many of us have made the group that is made up of Miltan, Smady Tings and Guzman Teddy really stand out.

I know most people always look forward to listening to Miltan’s verse because of the new Sheng words that they will learn and he didn’t disappoint in this track.

Mejja, who has been on a roll since the year began, really spiced up Wamocho with his catchy and witty rhymes that will definitely make you scratch your head as you try to make sense of them.

Mejja

The beat for this jam was produced by Solinga and SQ Byron and Mastered by Sadafa and they honestly deserve a pat on the back because they outdid themselves.

Notably, the video for Wamocho is also dope. The Raww Film Maker never disappoint. He really brought the house party theme of the video to life. I also love the smooth transitioning.

If you like music, and mixes in particular, the chances that you’ve come across his channel are very high. The best part is that it has almost every genre that you can think of.

Richy Haniel

Anyway, I recently called him up because I wanted to find out what he is doing to support upcoming musicians and DJs and what determines who he is going to work with. I also wanted him to share his thoughts on Gengetone.

Richy Haniel uses his YouTube page, which has more than 300,000 subscribers, to promote upcoming artists who have potential of making it big but don’t have a fan base.

He understands that it’s hard for upcoming artists to get a platform where they can showcase their talents and that is why he has taken it upon himself to push them because ordinarily it’s extremely hard for them to get on any big platforms.

I also asked Richy Haniel, who has worked with big names like; Ethic, Zzero Sufuri, Mbogi Genje, Wakali Wao, Boondocks Gang etc, what determines whether he will help in pushing an artist and he told me that he has to resonate with your sound.

As for upcoming DJs, some of the things that he looks before uploading a mix on his channel are; the arrangement of songs, the transitioning from  one song to the next and generally the uniqueness of the mix.

He has worked with DJ Bash, DJ Lyta, DJ Gabu, DJ Byron, DJ Joe Mfalme, the list is endless. You can reach him on +254722510385 or email him on [email protected].

The channel is run by a gentleman who is known as Richard Haniel Mashua and I recently had a chat with him about why he launched the YouTube account, his progress and future plans.

Apparently, Richard, who will turn 25 on Monday, June 8, started off as DJ before venturing into music distribution when he saw a gap.

His vision was to create a platform that is similar to Worldstar Hip Hop that upcoming artists and deejays can use as a launchpad for their careers.

Unfortunately and as fate would have it, Richard’s first YouTube account – which had more than 70,000 subscribers – was terminated in 2017.

But that didn’t stop him as he quickly opened another channel and it recently crossed the 300,000 subscribers mark and boasts of more than more than 60 million views.

Richy Haniel

I am sure at this point you are wondering what he does puts food on his table and how and the answer is that it does. Other than the money he makes from YouTube, he also charges DJs to upload their mixes on his channel.

For artists, he has two models. If you want to upload your  jam on his channel, you get into an agreement on how you will split the revenue. The artist can also decide to pay the marketing fee and retain the rights to their song.

Other than that, Richy is also a musician and has done many songs, including a collabo that he recently released jam with Bandanah and Sean Dampte dubbed Jibambe. Basically, he is a Jack of all trades.

I also asked him his future plans and he told me that he is keen on growing the channel and helping young musicians have a foothold in the industry. You can reach him on +254722510385 or email him on [email protected].
