Brenda Jons has come out of the closet. Good for her. She feels secure enough with her position in life to be who she truly is and that is a fantastic thing. It is a beautiful way to live your life -being true to yourself.

The problem, however, is om the fact that she has outed celebrity entrepreneur and makeup artist, Phoina. And that is never a good thing to do. Actually, I am sure that if this was done by a man or a straight woman, people would have been baying for their… Uh… You know how the saying goes.
And I have to wonder why no one is trying to hold Brenda Jons accountable for the folly she displayed. While I understand that the two have some history together and it is probably her motive to try and hurt her, this was not it.
10 Kenyan online comedians who cracked our ribs in 2020
The biggest reason for my argument, the fact that we are a very conservative country and in Kenya, ho -no, let’s simply call it being “of a different dispensation” is a very sensitive topic. In Kenya, being of this divergent orientation can end up with you getting threats against your very existence.
And Brenda Jons knows about it. This is the reason why a lot of celebs and indeed, a lot of everyday run of the mill Kenyans choose to remain in the closet. We have seen the likes of gospel artist Joji Bario get attacked while he is in his own home and all because a few of his neighbours did not agree with his choice of lifestyle.
So why would anyone give a pass to Phoina’s accuser? The accusation put her literal life in danger because that is the type of society Kenya is. And yet feminists are all silent. None of them is willing to call Ms Jons out -until now.
Can you imagine the amount of damage the accusations levelled against Phoina could potentially have done to her business? Can you imagine the type of damage Brenda Jons has done if she was not out to her immediate family and friends?
And the fact that she made a sloppy apology is not even going to be a point of discussion because now we have to focus on some of what she said; admitting to being a perpetrator of domestic abuse. That is a very problematic admission. And then she also claimed to have done so with a weapon.
I mean, the entire topic is a very difficult one to tackle but we should not condone this behaviour. And that is why I wonder why we are simply being flippant with a self-admitted perpetrator of domestic violence. That is not just a red flag for her current partner either but a complete deal breaker if she is smart. Patterns… People always repeat theirs.
