A tragic incident unfolded today, Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024, in Nyamira County, Kenya. A five-story building in the Gesima market, Kitutu Masaba, collapsed, trapping an unknown number of people under the rubble.
The Kenya Red Cross Society swiftly initiated a search and rescue mission.
“Several people are feared trapped,” the Kenya Red Cross reported, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Thankfully, there has been some positive progress. Three individuals, including two children and a 70-year-old man, have been pulled from the debris. Masaba North police commander Robert Ndambiri confirmed that all three sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Keroka subcounty hospital.

Authorities revealed a concerning detail – the collapsed building was condemned in 2014, indicating it was deemed unsafe for habitation. Police Commander Ndambiri further stated that no one was supposed to be residing within the structure.
The collapse also impacted nearby residences. Three houses were reportedly affected as the building fell, potentially trapping additional victims.
