Building Collapses In Nyamira County, Burrying Numerous People, Rescue Efforts Underway

A tragic incident unfolded today, Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024, in Nyamira County, Kenya. A five-story building in the Gesima market, Kitutu Masaba, collapsed, trapping an unknown number of people under the rubble.

The Kenya Red Cross Society swiftly initiated a search and rescue mission.

“Several people are feared trapped,” the Kenya Red Cross reported, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Thankfully, there has been some positive progress. Three individuals, including two children and a 70-year-old man, have been pulled from the debris. Masaba North police commander Robert Ndambiri confirmed that all three sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Keroka subcounty hospital.

Authorities revealed a concerning detail – the collapsed building was condemned in 2014, indicating it was deemed unsafe for habitation. Police Commander Ndambiri further stated that no one was supposed to be residing within the structure.

The collapse also impacted nearby residences. Three houses were reportedly affected as the building fell, potentially trapping additional victims.

A Nyamira woman beats her husband’s head for allegedly being unfaithful

A clan elder from Manga in Nyamira County is currently undergoing medical treatment at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital after his wife allegedly used a hammer to strike his head. During the night altercation in Nyaboterere village, the 50-year-old man also lost his left eye, which has been surgically removed due to irreparable nerve damage.

Doctors explained that the nerves in the eye were severely damaged, necessitating its removal. The wife had initially accused him of having extramarital affairs, leading to a heated argument that escalated into a physical fight.

“She had recently accused me of dating women and that I was depleting our family income on them, accusations that are base and false,” he told journalists from his hospital bed.

The situation intensified when the man decided to sell part of his land and deposit the money to cover tuition fees for their children in university and colleges. The wife became suspicious, leading him to withdraw the cash and bring it home in a box.

“It appears she could not take it in that I had banked the cash for our children and instead begun going around accusing me falsely among my children that I had taken it to concubines,” he explained.

In an attempt to ease tensions, he brought the entire amount of Sh260,000 home and handed it to his wife. However, he suspects that this action may have triggered the violent attack on his life.

Now facing potential long-term paralysis due to the injuries, the man appeals to well-wishers for financial assistance for his children, as the wife escaped with the money. Authorities are actively pursuing the woman in connection with the incident.

The last moments in Nyamai Ward MCA’s life before crash

Elijah Osiemo, an MCA from the Nyamai ward, was recently murdered in a car accident.

On Monday afternoon, the collision happened along Maai Mahiu-Naivasha Road.

MCA Duke Masira of Nyamira Township ward has outlined the sequence of incidents that resulted in the horrific traffic collision.

On Tuesday, Masira announced that he, Osiemo, and Nominated MCA Priscillah Nyatichi were traveling to Nairobi to attend a meeting.

“We met a motorbike that was carrying charcoal. When our driver tried avoiding the motorbike, the rider panicked and veered more into the road. Our driver tried to avoid hitting the motorbike but ended up hitting the sacks of charcoal.”

In Mai Mahiu, Narok County, their vehicle lost control and flipped into the escarpment after they struck the charcoal sacks.

Masira claimed to be sitting in the front seat with the car’s driver, who also happens to be Nyatichi.

“The deceased MCA was at the back with Nyatichi who has been seriously injured.”

Masira reported feeling some pain in his chest and that his left leg, hand, and hand were all seriously hurt.

“All I can say is sorry to the family of my brother Osiemo. He had a very young family.”

Osiemo served as the majority leader of the Nyamira county assembly in addition to being the MCA for the Nyamai Ward.

The two MCAs who survived the collision were sent to Naivasha Level Four Hospital right away for medical attention.
