Today, we are not going to talk about whether the Gengetone genre is still a big deal or not. Instead, I we will to focus on a group that has been making waves with every new jam and that is the Ochunglo Family.
To be honest, to this very day, I’m yet to come across a song by Ochunglo Family that I didn’t like. Well, sometimes it takes a little bit of time before some of their song grow in me but I come to love them eventually.

The group which is made up of Benzema David alias Alejandro, Nelly The Goon and Dmore keeps setting the pace for other Gengetone artists because of their ingenuity.
The can turn almost anything into a track and you can rest assured that it will be a hit. The three musicians are some of the best lyricists that we have in Kenya at the moment so I’m sure it just child’s play to them.
I know people have varied opinions about their lyrics, with a vast majority saying that they are dirty. However, if you choose to focus on their rhymes and wordplay, you will realize that these guys are really talented.

The other thing that I like about Ochunglo Family is that they are always trying out new ideas. For instance their new jam titled Make Up is a 2 in 1 concept that has not been seen locally and they pulled it off.
When all is said and done, we’ll remember Benzema, Nelly The Goon and Dmore for playing a crucial role in pushing Gengetone and getting us back to appreciating local music.

Ochunglo Family, the super-talented Gengetone group that brought us hits like; Na Iwake, Mbingijii, Aluta, Kaa NaMama Yako, Kirimino etc., is back with a new song and it’s a big tune.
The jam dubbed Make Up has been getting a lot of airplay on local TV and radio stations since it came out few hours ago and to be honest, we are also feeling it.

Basically, this track highlights the fact that most women aren’t as beautiful as they appear because a number of them hide behind their make up. Ouch!
If you’re a big fan of Ochunglo Family, like myself, then you already know that this sing is lit even before you listen to it. Seriously though, when have they ever disappointed us?
All the three members of the group Dmore, Benzema (Alejandro) and Nelly The Goon are known to have dope flows. However, in this jam I was really impressed by the latter, especially the part where he calls out Ezekiel Mutua.
Ochunglo Family
Perhaps the most amazing thing about Make Up is that when you think it’s over the beat suddenly changes and Nelly The Goon and Benzema drop verses. Put simply, there are two songs in one.
I totally love the beat and instrumentation on this jam. Other than the fact that they make the song catchy, they also blend well with the artists’ flow, vibe and tempos. Kudos to Eric Musyoka for a good job.
The video is also dope. I was totally impressed by most of its aspects. Some of the things that caught my attention are the props, locations, lighting, smooth scene transitioning, concept, models and the general editing.

The highly-anticipated jam by Nelly The Goon, Odi Wa Murang’a, The Only Delo, Breeder LW, DJ Kaywise, Nifty Boi and VDJ Jones is finally out and we are really feeling it.
The track dubbed Riba, which is a Sheng word that means story, has been getting a lot of airplay since it was released a few hours ago and to be honest, it deserves all the attention that it’s getting because it’s really dope.
Odi Wa Murang’a
Ladies and gentlemen, this song is really infectious and perhaps that explains why I’ve listened to it more the twenty times since it came out. I’m not even kidding.
The musicians who were featured on Riba were well thought-out. It is such a dope combination of talents and if you ask me, this is the best Gengetone jam of 2020. Yup, I said it.
Odi Wa Murang’a totally aced that hook. To be honest, I do not even understand what he is saying but it just sounds pleasant to the ears.
Nelly The Goon also had a sick verse. However, I would prefer that he avoids being raunchy since that is too old now seeing as we are in 2020.
The Only Delo
The Only Delo really came through on Riba. He always has a unique way of expressing himself in songs and to add to that, he is simply interesting to listen to.
Breeder LW did not disappoint either. He is always dope. I was also impressed by the Nigerian artist who goes by the name Nifty Boi. He really spiced up Riba with his English flow because he’s also a bad ass rapper.
The beat on this track is impeccable. Listening to it makes you feel like hitting your local club and having a good time and that is not a bad thing or is it?
The video for this jam is also really dope. I totally love the quality. The styling and scene transitioning were also good and I thing whoever directed it deserves a pat on the back.
The song dubbed Gorokia, which is a Kikuyu word that means ‘go crazy’, has been getting a lot of airplay since it was released a few days ago and to be honest, we are also feeling it.
Nelly The Goon
I totally love this jam. I have listened to it a couple of times since it was released and every time I play it, it’s like I am hearing it for the very first time. Yup, it’s that good.
Nelly The Goon – who happens to be my favourite Ochunglo Family member – really showcased his wordplay skills in Gorokia.
He has a unique ability to come up with random rhymes from words that don’t even have the same suffix and it does sound very pleasant to the ears though I am sure some will say that this is watered down version of Nelly The Goon.

I must agree that when Nelly The Goon is with his group mates i.e. Benzema (Alejhandro) and Dmore, his wordplay skills seem way better and his delivery is more solid compared to when he is on a track alone.
That aside, the beat on this jam is on point. Other than the fact that it’s catchy, I am sure you will agree with me that it’s really danceable – not that I would know anything about that.

The song titled Sambusa proves that the sound which became popular circa 2018 is very much alive and we can’t just wish it away.

If you ask me, and I know you won’t, it is probably one of the best Gengetone tracks that have been released since the new decade began because it’s so infectious.
I’ve listened to this song a couple of times since it was released and every time I play it, it’s like I’m hearing it for the very first time. Yup, it’s that good ladies and gentlemen.
One of the things that I totally love about these youngins is their creativity. Their ability to match random words and make them rhyme is quite impressive.
Boondocks Gang
If you choose to ignore the dirty things that they are singing about, you will probably agree with me that they are the best thing that has ever happened to the Kenyan industry at large.
Addi Chokoch never ceases to amaze me. As I was listening to this jam, I began wondering where he has disappeared because it’s been a minute since I heard a song from him. He totally killed the hook for Sambusa.
Ochunglo Family members namely; Nelly The Goon and Ex Ray also did good job. However, if I had to pick one who swept me off my feet with his lyricism then I would go for the latter nevermind the rique things that he was saying.

Maddox and Ex Ray also brought their A-games on this jam but in this case I feel the former outshone the latter but I know some of you will disagree with me. Anyway, to each his own.
The beat on this track is impeccable. As you;re listening to it, you won’t resist the urge to dance. I don’t have much to say about the video since the format is the same with most Gengetone jams but I feel it works.

The Kenyan hip hop scene has become of age. The present hip hop artist generation are out on the street, outdoing themselves with unbelievable, never-before-seen talent. We have finally found a signature beat that solely speaks and identifies as Kenyan Hip Hop.
Wikipedia, on Hip Hop: “…stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhymic speech that is chanted. It’s defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, breakdancing and graffiti writing….”
Present day Kenyan hip hop outfits have perfected the art of sampling beats or bass lines from records (or synthesized beats and sounds), and rhythmic beat-boxing.

This new sound didn’t debut with the Z-generation artists. They have gone on to perfect the sound that debuted with the Nairobi club-banger by the artists Mayonde and Stonie Jiwe. The track was a huge success.
A few months back, Ethic broke out with a catchy, infectious track, tagged Pandana. That track received an instant stamp of approval by fans – who outdid themselves uploading short dance videos. More favorites followed in quick succession:

KRG THE DON
What greatly resonates with this new hip hop style is that the artists and their producers haven’t over-hyped the genre with an exotic, upper class feel that’s common with the older generation hip hop artists. The videos aren’t shot in upscale neighborhoods with heated swimming pools as a back drop, but in mid-level suburb streets – Dagoretti, Doonholm, Githurai and the ilk.
The cast do not break the bank dressing in Gucci and Armani. They do not use expensive jewelry and unrealistic, hired video vixens – madem wa mtaa wako tu sawa. Teens across the country appreciate and connect with this!
In the USA, that’s exactly how hip hop started in The Bronx, and became a revolution.
The only case of extravagance in a video appears on Mathogothanio by KRG The Don and Boondocks. The video has rides not for the everyday kid, up and including a Ford Mustang 2017 model (they are forgiven – it’s a huge track with awesome beat flow and seamless rap).
Self-appointed moral policemen would be quick to trash the new generation Kenyan hip hop music as ratchet level, vulgar and unsuitable for the average teen. It’d be wise to remember we, read millennials, have grown up on a dirty staple of American rap: Lil Wayne, T.I, Future, et al. These rappers are the real definition of dirty and vulgar. The real problem is that with Kenyan artists, you get to hear the actual lyrics.
Message? Be real, support your own.

I have always held the opinion that Benzema (Alejandro) is the best lyricist. However, most people don’t seem to agree with me.
In their opinion, Nelly The Goon is the illest songwriter in the group, in their opinion, Ochunglo Family would be nothing him – a notion that I don’t agree with.
Admittedly, all the group members, including Dmore, are talented. They have treated us since they thrust into the limelight with Krimino and we are grateful.
However, I’d like us to settle this once and for all. I would like to know who is the best best lyricist between Benzema (Alejandro) and Nelly The Goon.
Benzema
There’s just something unique about how he sings, maybe it’s his tendency to kind of drag words. I think he totally killed it in Na Iwake (Remix).
Nelly The Goon
There’s no deny that he dope lyricist. If you check the comments section of their videos on YouTube, you’ll find many people showering him with praise. My favourite verse by him is from their latest release Kaa Na Mama Yako.

I’m a huge fan of Ochunglo Family. I not only like their music but also how they carry themselves. At this point, I can confidently say that they will last longer in this industry than all the other new-age groups or solo artists.
If you look at their music approach i.e. the songs that they have release and the collabos that they have done you’ll realise that Nelly The Goon, Benzema and Dmore are actually brilliant people and this reaffirms my line of thought.
If you remember well, we came to know about the group when Nelly teamed up with Dmore on Krimino. Incase you don’t know the background story, it was about an MCA who was complaining after being pepper sprayed in the Nairobi County Speaker’s office.

My point is they turned an funny clip that we’d ordinarily share on WhatsApp and forget about into a song and we all loved it, at least most of us did. The song blew up in a few days and before we knew it, they were on everyone’s lips simply because of their ingenuity.
The same case applies to their latest jam dubbed Kaa Na Mama Yako which was as a result of something West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo mentioned during a rally while warning certain people to stay away from his functions.
What Ochunglo Family does is to turn ordinary clips that we’ve all seen into songs and we consume their music because we can relate to it because let’s be honest I’m pretty sure you all watch the Lonyangapuo and krimino video before they infused them in their songs.
Every so often they release songs that have nothing to do with viral clips because they don’t want to be monotonous. They want to show us that they are actually talented. In my opinion, this is actually commendable or else we would have a song from Ochunglo Family about every viral clip.
Ochunglo Family with Ethic
If you also look at the collabos that they have done to date, you’ll realise that they are not random. In one way or the other, the songs played a big part in growing their fanbase and made up them who they are today.
Apart from being geniuses, I also realised that the three members of the group are actually mature. This is not just about age. If you’ve watched their interviews and seen how they carry themselves, I know you agree with me on this.
To date we’ve never heard any controversial stories about any of the group members and I hope we never do because most of us will be shattered since we have so much hope on these talented stars. The way I see it, this group will be around for a really long time.

In the last one year or so, we’ve witnessed the emergence or groups or individuals who’s music approach is different from the norm.
They have treated us to many good songs so much so that you would be right to say that they breathed new life into the local music industry. Didn’t they though?
Out of the many groups of new-age artists, three stand out not for any other reason but because they are made up of super-talented individuals. They are; Ethic Entertianment, Ochunglo Family and Sailors Gang.
If you are keen, then I’m sure you’ve noticed that each of these three groups has an individual who is hailed for his lyrical prowess every time they release a new song. It’s just what it is.
In my opinion, the three are; Rekless (Ethic), Nelly The Goon (Ochunglo Family) and Miracle Baby (Sailors Gang).
For starters, let’s agree that all of them are exceptional. However, we’d still like to know who, acccording to you, is the best lyricist among the three.
Rekless
His verses are always flawless. You can tell that he puts some thought into his each line. He really wowed his fans in Ehic’s latest release dubbed Figa.

Nelly The Goon
His verses are effortless but outstanding. He says random things but the end result is always impeccable. According to many people, he really outdid himself in Ochunglo Family’s latest release dubbed Kaa Na Mama Yako.
Miracle Baby
Although Sailors Gang has only released two songs to date, Miracle Baby has been on everyon’s lips because of his lit verses. He really did a great job in thier latest jam dubbed Pekejeng.

Ochunglo Family, the super-talented group that is made up of Nelly The Goon, Benzema and Dmore is back with another jam and it slaps really hard, it really does.
Dubbed Kaa Na Mama Yako, the song was inspired by a viral speech by West Pokot Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo in which he says if you have nothing better to do, stay at your mum’s (This was the simplest way of putting it).
I was really impressed by the delivery of all the group members in this jam. While some claim that Nelly The Goon carried the day, I’m with Benzema on this one. I think he really aced it. Dmore also did a good job.

My favourite line was, however, by Dmore, there is a part he says,”Nyonga nduru nduru, cheza chini ka Waiguru guru, wewe ni mtamu kama sukari nguru nguru, bakora kako ndani si turu turu.”
I have no idea why, I just loved that line. And no, it’s not what you think. Of course it is.
The beat, which was produced by Alvin Brown was also on point. Although the tempo is a bit slow, it’s still really good. This beat can bring life to a party and I’m not even exaggerating.
The video was directed by the one and only Ivan Odie and he also did a great job. I was particularly impressed by the drone shots of the vixens who were dancing on top of the vehicle. It was nothing short of spectacular!
