“I stood outside our compound, locked in a heated argument with my husband. I don’t even remember the details, just the weight of financial struggles, heightened emotions, and the sense that we couldn’t agree on anything,” she recounted.

In her frustration, Mercy said she acted out of anger. “Something inside me snapped. Without thinking, I pulled off my wedding ring, threw it into the field, and shouted, ‘I can live without you.’ Even as I said it, the words stung, but my pride wouldn’t let me take them back,” she admitted.

Mercy described their sixth year of marriage as the most difficult, with everything seemingly falling apart. Reflecting on the experience 16 years later, she emphasized the importance of therapy, which she wished they had sought at the time.

“The issue wasn’t really with each other but with unresolved grief. My husband was dealing with the loss of his mother, financial struggles, and other family challenges. We were fighting battles we didn’t fully understand, and it took a toll on us both,” she explained.

Interestingly, Mercy revealed that her wedding ring was found a year later by someone cutting grass in the field. By then, the couple had begun their journey of healing, and finding the ring felt symbolic.

“It served as a reminder of how far we had come. I wear it now as a symbol of our love and a testament to forgiveness, humility, and faith,” she said.

Mercy acknowledged that marriage is not easy but emphasized the transformative power of inviting God into difficult seasons.

“Even the hardest times can become a testimony of grace when you let God take the lead,” she concluded.

David Muguro, who is also a gospel minister, manages Mercy’s music career. She frequently expresses her gratitude and admiration for him.

“My hubby has been one of my greatest decisions @davidtmuguro. Even if I had the chance to pick anyone in the world, I’d still choose him,” Mercy shared.

On his birthday, she penned a heartfelt message:

“Happy Birthday, my love. Every day with you is an overwhelming blessing. Because you cling to Jesus, you only get better. Thank you for being my best friend, personal pastor, ministry partner, and wonderful husband. Life is always better with you.”

“Shame on you!” Mercy Masika bashes gospel artists for turning their music career to businesses

Mercy Masika is a talented artist that has reached out to millions through her music. Unlike the Gengetone and hype music this lady has perfected gospel music and is now ranked among the top artists in Kenya.

With this, Mercy Masika who has been in the music industry for long has come out to bash fellow artists for using the gospel industry as a money making machine.

In a detailed post shared on her social media pages; Mercy went on to reveal that music released by these young artists lacks inspiration. According to the lady, this type of music cannot speak or bless those who listen to it; making the songs useless to true believers.

Mercy Masika

As seen on her post the lady wrote;

The reason much of today’s music lacks inspiration and memorability is that people have blurred the lines and turned music into too much of a business. It takes moral courage to remain true to inspire, impact and be true to who you are called to be.

Trust the process

To those afraid of putting in effort then reaping the fruits in the end; Mercy went on to advise them that it’s better to take time – instead of misleading the crowd with songs released to make money.

The gospel artist went on to add saying;

And even though remaining true may sometimes take time to pay…it pays very well. There’s a confidence that comes from being true.

Kenyan gospel artists must wake up

A few months ago, I wrote an article where I stated that Kenyan gospel artists were deep in slumber reason being the industry is not as vibrant as it was 5 (or so) years ago.

Also read: Are Kenyan gospel musicians asleep?

Whichever way you look at it, the gospel industry seems to be lagging behind and that is something that is giving me sleepless nights because Kenya is a very religious country.

Mercy Masika

If you look at the biggest local songs this year, you’ll realize that most of them are risqué and I doubt there is a gospel singer who can say that he or she had a hit this year. Of course, Willy Paul does not count or does he?

I miss the days when the likes of Gloria Muliro (where did she disappear to btw?), Daddy Owen, Eunice Njeri, Mercy Masika, Marion Shakoo, Esther Wahome, M.O.G etc. would serve us with hit after hit.

Gospel concerts sold out in a matter of minutes and gospel award shows such as Groove Awards were really coveted. Those were the days when the gospel industry was at the top.

I don’t really know what happened but somewhere along the way, the rain started beating us so much so that almost everything has been dominated by secular artists. From radio and TV stations to awards shows.

M.O.G

To be honest, I don’t have a problem with secular artists. Afterall, they are also Kenyans and at the end of the day it’s a win for local music but at times I wonder what happened to gospel musicians? Did they get too comfortable?

Not that it’s a competition between the two camps but I’d prefer a situation where we have popular secular songs and popular gospel jams. All I am saying is that it’s high time Kenyan gospel musicians woke up from their deep sleep.

Are Kenyan gospel musicians asleep?

I honestly feel like Kenyan gospel musicians are deep in slumber. I’m saying this because I feel that the gospel industry is not as vibrant as it was a few years ago. I feel like it has stagnated.

If you are an avid fan of Kenyan music then I’m sure you remember how the gospel industry was big five to ten years ago. Can you?

M.O.G performing on stage
M.O.G performing on stage

The gospel industry was so enormous so much so that secular artists were almost unheard of, no one even cared about them or what they were up.

The biggest song in the country at any given time was from the likes of DK Kwenye Beat, Juliani, Willy Paul, M.O.G, Benachi, Daddy Owen, Bahati, Gloria Muliro, Eunice Njeri, Mercy Masika etc.

I don’t know what happened but somewhere along the way, the secular industry overtook took over. We can debate about this until the come home but deep down you also know that this is a fact.

The gospel music is not what it was five to ten years and this begs begs the question, are Kenyan gospel musicians asleep, did they get too comfortable or are they just lazy?

Gloria Muliro
Gloria Muliro

I know it’s not a competition between the two sides. After all, they are all Kenyan. As a Christian, it just gives me comfort when the gospel industry is at the top.

Don’t get me wrong, I listen to a lot of secular music. Yup! From Sauti Sol to Ethic, anything goes. I have nothing against secular musicians.

It’s just I really miss that days when gospel music was the order of the day. Those days when gospel gigs had the biggest crowds. The days when gospel musicians were really praising God with music.

This is a clarion call to all Kenyan gospel musicians. Enough said!

Mercy Masika launches a book club

“Mwema” singer Mercy Masika has joined a long list of other celebs with books clubs. On Sunday, the singer launched a book club at the Biblical Guest House in Kilimani.

“If knowledge is power then a book is its reservoir, so we must encourage our people to read,” she added during the launch.

“Even Mark Zuckerburg who is one of the greatest social media innovators of our time, has recognised the power of books and started a book club to encourage people to read.”

Meaning of books

The invite-only event was graced by books lovers including media personalities Gospel TV host Antony Ndiema and Dan Mwangi of NTV. The two showed their pleasure not only in books but of Masika’s event, praising her for the huge step.

“It is such an amazing initiate because Africa is rising and for us to have more influence in the world, we need to read. It has been said that if you want to hide something from an African, put it in a book, and I am proud that Mercy is changing that narrative,” said Antony Ndiema.

“Despite getting a D plus in school, I have built a career in ministry because of books. Life happens in seasons and there is a book for every season of life, you just have to find it and read it.”Rev Ken Aringo, who was present, added.

Kenyan gospel musicians who rarely write their songs and what it means

Songwriting is a practice that exists all over the world. It has been around for ages. Some of the greatest musicians of all time, including Michael Jackson, had songwriters. It’s a career as any so there’s nothing wrong with it.

I, however, have some concerns about songwriting in the gospel industry, especially in Kenya. I’m of the opinion that this practice should not exist and I’ll try my best to explain why.

You see, some of the biggest gospel musicians in our country rarely write their songs, they might have the mellowest voices around but they can’t pen down a song or hardly do so.

Mercy Masika’s Mwema and Nikupendeze were written by Mr. Vee, Shule Yako was written by Pitson.

Pitson

Moji Short Baba was the brains behind most of DK Kwenye Beat’s songs in the last one year, including Kijana Wa Kayole, Kwa Yesu Sawa. He also wrote Kumbe Kumbe by Bahati and Mr. Seed.

A chap known as Godson Jawabu wrote DK Kwenye Beat’s Asusu and Sari Sari.

Pitson also wrote Daddy Owen’s Vanity, Size 8’s Afadhali Yesu and Pale Pale, Makena’s Narudi, Laura Karwirwa’s Ni Neema Yako, among others.

These are just a few examples. They paint a picture of what the local gospel industry has become – a money making venture.

Do you feel a little bit disappointed when you discover that your favourite gospel was not written by the person who sang it? Of course yes.

The notion behind religion is that the man above should use you as a vessel to pass the message of salvation to others. So, what happens when you bought the ‘message’ from another person? Are you a vessel?

On the other hand, assuming the songwriters don’t do it for free, which is pretty obvious, does it mean that they are selling the gospel?

This article was not meant to ridicule any gospel singer, its purpose is to provoke a discussion. What do you think about all this? Leave a comment below.

Speaking in an Kiss FM interview, Masika said that that was a huge blessing.

“I’m grateful. It looked like a delay but it was a blessing. And also the people in the salon were ok, so it’s really a good thing. It was more like hurry up but then there were a lot of people to socialize with hapo. Of course I was feeling the delay but then I was kinda chatting with people. Later I was like haiya we delayed there, but we felt like it was God who protected us.,” she said.

Jalang’o narrates how he saved Mercy Masika from Dusit terror attack by blocking her car

God works in mysterious ways! Mercy Masika would have been trapped inside the DusitD2 Hotel on 14 Riverside were it not for Jalang’o who blocked her thus preventing her from leaving immediately.

Jalango and Mercy Masika were hired for an upcoming consumer promotion, the two had a meeting with their client on the same day terrorists attacked DusitD2 hotel.

Jalas and Masika’s meeting was at a different venue away from Dusit. The Milele FM presenter arrived late for the meeting and he couldn’t find a spot to park his car. He was forced to double park blocking other cars, including Mercy Masika’s car.

Appointment with hairdresser

Mercy Masika left the meeting in a hurry, she was supposed to drive to Dusit where she had an appointment with a hairdresser. But she couldn’t leave immediately because Jalango’s car had blocked her vehicle.

It took a while for Jalang’o to send his car keys so that the vehicle could be moved. Mercy Masika finally left for Dusit but before she could make it there the terror attack had already began, prompting her to change direction and head for safety.

It was hours later that it dawned on her that if she had left immediately she would have made it to Dusit on time and that she would have been right in the complex when the terror attack was happening.

The gospel singer Whatsapped Jalang’o telling her how he unknowingly saved her from the terror attack just by blocking her car.

Jalas decided to share the WhatsApp screenshot on social media and went on to narrate the whole incident;

God wins! #DussitAttack
So @mercymasikamuguro and I are involved in an upcoming consumer promotion and so we were invited for a meeting at the client office… I was in another meeting so I get to client meeting after Mercy! Driving in, the client parking is full so Iam forced to double park blocking other cars! I walk into the meeting and client has finished briefing Mercy and she is in a hurry for her saloon appointment since the next day is the launch date and she has to look the part! She hurriedly leave only to find her car blocked so they call me move my car but I give out my car key so there is a bit of delay! When she leaves not more than 20mins later news of the attack at Dusit where she was going for her appointment quickly spread! Waaaaa! When she shared the message I just thanked God! #GodAboveEverything
