Maandy: Men Find Me Intimidating, But I’m Actually a Soft Girl

Maandy’s rising fame hasn’t translated to success in her love life, largely due to public misconceptions about her demeanor. Her serious nature was often mistaken for hostility, which created a barrier between her and potential romantic partners. “I unintentionally intimidated people, especially men. But I’m really a soft girl,” she explained, reflecting on the challenges of dating while in the public eye. This has kept Maandy single for a long time, as many men have been too intimidated to approach her.

However, over time, she has learned to strike a balance between her strong persona and vulnerability, using her music to showcase her softer side. Recently, she addressed rumors about her relationship with fellow artist Breeder LW, firmly denying any romantic involvement. During an Instagram Q&A, Maandy clarified that her decade-long friendship with Breeder is purely platonic and supportive, even humorously acknowledging his reputation as a “ladies’ man.”

On her musical journey, Maandy shared that she started as a DJ before becoming a rapper. Known as Kabaya, her story began in the bustling neighborhoods of Dagoretti, where she split her time between Waithaka and Ngong. “I grew up between Waithaka and Ngong, but most of my friends were from Ngong,” she recalled.

Her early passion for music led her to organize entertainment events in high school. After graduating, Kabaya pursued DJing, quickly making a name for herself and securing a residency while still a student. “I used to DJ every Saturday and earned Sh 35,000 a month, which was great,” she reminisced. But fate had other plans. During a studio session, producer Jay Blink noticed her talent for freestyling and told her, “You’re doing the wrong thing. You need to rap.”

Though initially unsure, Kabaya’s natural talent for rap was undeniable, marking the start of her transformation from DJ to rapper.

Celebrities unite in protest of the 2024 finance bill

There has been an uproar  over this year’s finance bill which is about to pass in the next few days.  It contains controversial clauses such as an annual motor vehicle tax, 16% VAT on loan, 16% VAT on bread, excise duty on mobile money transactions and an increase of taxes on alcohol,

For a lot of prominent personalities in Kenyan entertainment they are taking action by protesting The Bill. At the front line we have Eric Omondi  who yesterday took to the streets to arrange a demonstration against the finance bill, and also appeared on television to debate it

Then we have celebrated artist Willy Paul  who said on Instagram:

“Guys, go read the finance bill 2024. My God, kwisha!”

Arbantone Artist Maandy also chimed in:

“Call your area MP and tell them to reject the 2024 Finance Bill. Tutamalizwa!”

Betty Kyallo, a former news anchor turned business woman, had something to say about the bill.

“A BIG NO to the Finance Bill 2024. We have closed businesses, we are ailing economically as a country. We don’t need any more suffering. We need support from our government, not torment.”

For her, these comments come from experience because she has closed multiple businesses in the last couple of years.  This includes her salon, her shelf space rental business and her spa.

Maandy Defends Arbantone Against Originality Criticisms

‘Bubbly bubbly’ hitmaker Maandy has delivered her harangue to critics who dismiss Arbantone music as unoriginal remixes.

Taking to social media, Maandy argues that Kenyan music has been dominating the charts for weeks, unlike foreign music which often takes center stage. She points out the popularity of Kenyan music in clubs, backed up by DJs who see high viewership on Kenyan remixes on Youtube.

Maandy suggests that critics might not be part of Arbantone’s target audience. Her data shows a younger demographic that enjoys and appreciates this style of music.

“I like to mind my business, but allow me to say this, for the past two or three weeks, top 3 trending songs, zimekuwa Kenyan songs.

“Every single time there is a popular sound in Kenya, you hear foreign music. Have you ever thought about that? You wont see a popular American, Nigerian song, you will purely hear Kenyan. You go to the club its just Kenyans. and as they are playing this, and I need Dj’s to maybe back me up,” she said

She encourages critics to let the genre evolve and improve through experimentation, highlighting that sampling is a common practice worldwide.

Maandy emphasizes the creativity behind Arbantone, stating she has albums of original beats and her producer samples them to create the unique Arbantone sound.

If you thought the original version, which was released in December 2019, was dope then you haven’t seen anything yet because the remix is out of this word, quite literally.

Boutross Munene

To be honest, I’ve listened to Kitu Nono Remix a couple of times and the more I play it is the more I love it because it is so infectious.

All the artists who were featured on this track brought their A-Games and I find it hard to decide whose verse I loved the most because they all nailed it.

Take for instance Breeder LW who is on the first verse. His flow and wordplay skills are so dope and you just want to keep listening to him as he does his thing because it sounds so pleasant to the ears.

Ssaru

The two ladies on this jam i.e. Maandy and Ssaru also killed it. They both have good lyrical skills and I would not be surprised if either of them becomes Kenya’s next biggest femcee.

I’m a huge fan of Boutross Munene, who is one third of the Alliance Domini Family (ADF), so naturally you’d expect me to say that he did a good job but believe you me, he really came through on this one.

Denzel Kong and Mastar VK did not disappoint either. Both of them have some great punchlines that will leave you scratching your head as you try to make sense of it all and that is not a bad thing or is it?

I really love the beat on this jam. If you ask me, the producer deserves a pat on the back for the good work. The video is also awesome, with some impeccable shots.

The song titled Kam Thru is all about having a good time and forgetting about the things that have been bugging you i.e. let loose a bit.

I love totally this track. The first reason is pretty obvious and that is the fact that Maandy’s voice is beautiful and you just want to keep listening to her. I mean, why am I  just discovering her? Where the heck have I been?

Other than her verse, this lass also did a good job on the chorus. It is so infectious and you will find yourself singing along in no time, trust me.

As expected, Boutross nailed it too. His verse was really dope. I must admit that I totally loved how kind of he moved away from the Shrap kind of singing that we all came to know him for and gave his fans a cocktail of sorts.

His wordplay skills is also out of this world, some of the things that he says in this song will leave you scratching your head as you try to make sense of them.

To add to that, their voices really blend well together, it’s like the two of them were meant for each other. I know I’m pushing it. Sorry.

The beat and instrumentation on Kam Thru is so sick. It has elements of a love ballad and a club banger at the same time. I wouldn’t really be surprised if I saw people busting moves to this jam.
