If you are keen, I’m sure you’ve noticed that both Octopizzo and Khaligraph Jones  have really upped their games in the last few years.

From their music videos down to language that they use, their content is definitely packaged batter than it was 5 (or so) years ago.

After winning the hearts of Kenyans, they both decided to shift their focuses to the international audiences i.e. potential fans outside the country.

This journey has seen them go out of their ways to work with some of the best audio producers and videographers because let’s be honest, how can you compete against the likes of AKA, Sarkodie, and Nasty C if you don’t invest in good quality?

Of late, the music videos that are being released by Khaligraph and Octopizzo are of high quality and  you could easily say that they meet international standards.

In as much as we appreciate the efforts that are being made by the two rappers, we’d still like to find out who between them has more international appeal.

Kenya’s youngest rapper Juala Superboy has dropped ‘Faya’ and it’s a hit (Video)

Have you ever heard of a 6-year-old rapper from Mathare who goes by the name Juala Superboy?

If you don’t know about him, then you don’t have a clue about what you are missing because this Class 2 pupil is very talented.

He became a household name when he dared Khaligraph Jones to a rap battle and actually zoned him. Okay, he let him win.

Now that you have some background, you’ll be pleased to know that this gifted lad is back with a new song.

Dubbed Faya, the jam is about how Juala Superboy is such a badass rapper so much so that other musicians are afraid of him.

In the song he says, “Wanajua mimi ni mbaya, wanajua mimi ni faya wanajua mimi ni mbaya wasanii hadi wanagwaya.”

His delivery is really on point in this song. I just wish that he could write his own songs so that we can asses his prowess.

The video concept was really good. Juala Superboy really looks like a superstar and you would even forget that he’s only 6.

I honestly can’t wait to see what more he has to offers as years fly by.

A few weeks ago, we had a poll where we asked you to pick whose concert you would attend among Willy Paul, Khaligraph Jones and Timmy Tdat and get value for your money because, let’s face it, we all attend gigs to be entertained.

I later realized that I had not featured any female artist on that poll and that’s why I decided to do a female version of it to see who you think can really own the stage from a list of three of the most sought after Kenyan female artists i.e. Akothee, Fena Gitu and Size 8.

Having watched performances of all the three, I think they all have it in them. You will definitely have the time of your life if you attend their. events. However, today we’d like to pit them against each other to see who you would settle on if you had to pick only one.

As you would expect, Esther Akoth, alias Akothee, is really energetic when she is on stage. Put simply, she knows how to own it. From the well-choreographed moves with her dances to her ability to improvise to how she engages the crowd, you will be left begging for more.

Unlike the other two, Fena is not jumpy on stage but that does not necessarily mean that she’s boring. Apart from having good crowd control skills, the Steam hit maker also oozes swagger when she’s on stage and maybe, just maybe this is why her fans really love her.

Linet Munyali, alias Size 8, has always been known to be a great performer. In my opinion, that has not changed even after she crossed over to the gospel industry. Apart from being flexible and energetic, the Mateke hit maker also knows how to interact with the crowd.

Kenyans should take Stivo Simple Boy seriously

Sometimes I wonder whether Kenyans, especially artists, take Steven Otieno, alias Stevo Simple Boy, seriously or they just want to associate with him because he’s the talk of the town.

In as much as his songs need a bit of polishing, I still feel that he’s very talented. He has it in him. He really does.

However, for one reason or the other people have turned him into a butt  of jokes and fail to appreciate the fact that he is a gifted singer.

To add to that, his songs have a message which is not the case with many Kenyan artists because let’s be honest, when was the last time someone released a song that tells you to avoid drugs?

A few weeks ago, Khaligraph said the same thing that people just want to associate with him and have him on their shows to boost their ratings but no one really wants to help him.

Truth is, Stevo Simple Boy was discovered roughly 7 weeks ago but to this very day we have not seen any collabo with all the big artists who have posed for photos with him.

This begs a lot of questions, it makes you wonder what they think of him and whether they would go the extra mile to ensure that his talent does not go to waste.

If continue to think of him as a joke, then he won’t be relevant in three months because Kenyans forget very fast.

Khaligraph Jones is currently in a serious relationship with his baby mama, Georgina Muteti and quite happier now that he has a child to call his own.

The rapper and his girlfriend this past weekend gave many a reason to talk after releasing a few of their family photos.

Georgina who is quite low key when it comes to social media went ahead to share the photos on her Instagram expressing how her heart was full as she captioned the photos;

These days, almost every song begins with the words, “Motif Di Don” or “Magix Enga on the beat”. You would be tempted to think that the two are the only music producers in the country which is not the case.

While the are are countless music producers in Kenya, the work of Magix Enga and Motif Di Don really stands out. They have a distinct approach and this explains why they are a cut above the rest and the most-sought after beat makers.

Each of them has worked with the biggest names in the entertainment industry and in a way they have helped propel the new Kenyan sound that made many people realize that they can actually enjoy local music.

Magix Enga has worked with the likes of Otile Brown, Timmy Tdat, Arrow Bwoy, KRG The Don, P-Unit, Zzero Sufuri, Ethic, Alvindo, King Kaka, Kristoff, Khaligraph Jones, Prezzo, Naiboi, Mejja, Rankaddah. The list is endless.

On the other hand, Motif Di Don has produced songs for Masauti, Ethic, Otile Brown, Khaligraph Jones, Masterpiece, Nadia Mukami, Qritical, Pro & Lava Lava and Rayvanny who are both Tanzanian singers.

If you are a fan of Kenyan music, like yours truly, then I’m sure you’ve seen your favourite local musician in the aforementioned names. What’s even more is that most of them are big acts which also means that Magix Enga and Motif Di Don are the baddest producers around.

If you’re wondering, yes Khaligraph Jones daughter will be one cute baby Judging from her mum and now the auntie.

Just a few hours ago Khaligraph’s girlfriend Georgina Muteti shared a never seen before photo of her younger sister introducing her to fans through her Instagram page.

Well, looking at the young lady we can all agree that the Muteti sisters are definitely hot and there is no argument about that.

6 collabos between Kenyan and Tanzanian artists that we’d totally love to see

Kenyan artists have been working with their Tanzanian counterparts a lot more lately so much so that people who don’t like Bongo music, like yours truly, are starting to feel like it’s worth their time.

We’ve seen some impressive collabos between Tanzanian and Kenyan artists in the recent past. Some of the include; Timmy Tdat & Rosa Ree, Willy Paul and Nandy, Bahati and Rayvanny, Juma Jux and Nyashisnki and so on.

In my opinion, we need to see more of these and that’s why I came up with a list of artists who I think should work together because why not? Also there’s the fact that it well grow East African music.

That being said, here’s our wish list of collabos:

1. Nadia Mukami and Juma Jux – After watching their mash up of African Lover on Coke Studio, I think these two should get into studio like yesterday.

2. Rosa Ree and Khaligraph Jones – This collabo should have happened a long time ago. I mean why not? Both artists are bad-ass rappers and they would really kill it on one track.

3. Otile Brown & Vanessa Mdee – I’m not quite sure about this but something tells me that a collabo between them would be totally fire. I’m looking forward to the day they will give us a treat.

4. Arrow Bwoy and Rayvanny –  I live for the day these two musicians will release a song together. Thinking about it just gives me goosebumps. If a collabo between them comes to pass, it will be the biggest song of the year.

5. Nyashisnki and Nandy – I feel like a collabo between these two would be pure bliss. Nandy’s smooth vocals would really blend in well Nyashisnki’s rap. Get into studio guys!

Octopizzo Vs Khaligraph: Who will survive the new-age music revolution?

Truth be told, the new-age (new wave) Kenyan musicians are giving established musicians a run for their money, even the likes of Octopizzo and Khaligraph. Allow me to explain my line of thought.

At the end of the day, even if their music genres are different, they are competing for the same fanbase, which is you and I, and as you know there can only be one winner so it’s either the new age artists beat the established artists or vice versa.

Both Octopizzo and Khaligraph were doing well before the emergence of new age artists because they were both releasing street music i.e. songs that are in Sheng and relate to the struggles that the ordinary person goes through.

If you’re keen then I am sure you have noticed that Khaligraph has stayed the course. On the other hand, Octopizzo has veered off. In the recent past, he has has changed his style so much so that you would think that he no longer cares about his local fans.

Both Octopizzo and Khaligraph have been trying to surmount the pressure that they are getting from new-age artist and it got to a point where they bowed to pressure. The way I see it they had no choice.

If you listen to Octopizzo’s Zikishika, there is a verse where he drops lamba lolo. In Leave Me Alone, Khaligraph pays homage to Zzero Sufuri and the likes. As the saying goes, if you can’t beat them join them.

This got me thinking, who between the two can survive the new-age music revolution because let’s be honest, these youngins have taken over. From the fans, to music streaming sites and YouTube to local TV and radio stations to gigs, all people waiting to consume is new-age musicians.

Timmy Tdat Vs Willy Paul Vs Khaligraph: Who is the best live performer?

When you attend a gig, you expect to be entertained and this largely depends on the performers and what they do on stage. Truth is, anyone can get on stage but very few people can own it. (I sound like a motivational speaker at this point).

I have attended a couple of gigs over the last few years and watched some on YouTube and in my honest opinion some of the best live Kenyan performers are; The Kansoul, Jua Cali, Juliani, Nameless, Sauti Sol, Avril, Timmy Tdat, Willy Paul and Khaligraph Jones.

Today, we’ll focus on the last three names because they are individuals who are current i.e. they don’t belong to any groups and they have been in the game for almost the same period of time and they are still relevant to date.

We would like to find out who among the three you consider the best live performer and why. What makes each of them stand out and why? We want to know how they manage to pull large crowds to their events.

Apart from having mad energy while performing, the Tam Tam hitmaker is known to pull stunts on stage. He always does something unexpected perhaps this is why his fans can’t get enough of him.

Khaligraph Jones has lately been shading people on his Instagram page and from the look of things; he really doesn’t care what people think of him.

Looking at his Instagram page, we understand that money is no longer a problem and in fact now rolls like a boss.

The rapper apparently owns about 3 cars but from his latest post we understand he now wants to sell his Mercedes Benz.

This comes after Controversial artist Willy Paul went on to purchase a similar ride just recently.

We also understand that Otile Brown also happens to have the same car and this might be the reason the OG doesn’t want to be seen in their league.

As I was watching Khaligraph Jones’ new banger Leave Me Alone, I kept thinking how he’s way ahead of his peers and how long it will take them to catch up.

In my opinion, the rapper whose real name is Brian Ouko Omollo is playing in the big leagues. His rivals are continental stars, the likes of AKA, Nasty C, M.I Abaga, Sarkodie, Ice Prince, Phyno etc.

Khaligraph has reached a point where his music is consumed by people across Africa and not just Kenya, a quick peek at the comments section of his music videos on YouTube will confirm this.

I find this interesting is because apart from Sauti Sol, the Superman hit maker is the only other Kenyan act who’s getting a lot of continental attention. The keyword is a lot.

In a way, this is a win for the country as a whole since it makes outsiders curious about the kind of music that is coming from Kenya.

Chances are, they’ll find other great musicians after listening to Khaligraph and perhaps they will enjoy their music even more.

Despite the fact that Khaligraph is doing well and making music that is consumable across Africa, I still feel that he needs a strong competitor in Kenya.

You see, as it is now Khaligraph is the pacesetter for the local rap scene, people are always curious to find out what he’s up to so that they can ‘copy’.

Because he’s ahead of the pack, this means that he doesn’t have someone to keep him on his toes. He can decide to slack because at the end of the day, he’s still the best of the best.

However, if he had someone to keep him in check i.e. a strong competitor, he would push himself harder and maybe, just maybe he’ll finally bring the BET Award for Best International Act: Africa home.

The two have lately been updating fans about their lives as parents on Instagram; however have chosen to keep their newborn’s face off social media until gets older.

Khaligraph Jones is not one of those artists who blindly follows every fashion trend. So far he has proven to be a simple guy – with good taste in the clothes, jewelry and shoes he wears.

For this reason, the rapper came out strongly to throw shade at Balenciaga shoes, Triple S low-top trainers estimated to cost Ksh 66,000.

Masauti is living proof that patience pays

Many people are just coming to know of Kenyan singer Mohammed Ali Said, alias Masauti, but the truth is that he has been around for sometime now.

The Mombasa born and bred singer has been making music for the since 2014 or thereabout. Put simply, it took him 5 years (or more) before he became a household name.

Despite being a super-talented singer, Masauti, who’s also known as Kenyan Boy, really struggled before Kenyans finally recognized him.

When he made his official debut in the local entertainment industry he referred to himself as Mswazzi Masauti and was singed to SwaRnB Records which is owned by legendary producer Tedd Josiah.

His first song under the stable dubbed Mahabuba didn’t do well. Very few people know it. Actually, I first heard it today as I was writing this article.

Listening to the song, anyone can tell why it didn’t do well. Although, it’s a very beautiful composition, it lacks the ‘party vibe’ that most Kenyans are used to. This song can make you sleep in a club!

It seems Masauti discovered this as he quickly re-invented himself (of course with the help of others). If you compare the Mahabuba with his latest single dubbed Ipepete, you’ll notice the sharp contrast.

Not only did he change his music approach, he also worked on his image. He moved from being a singer with a hideous hairstyle to a semi-tough musician. For the umpteenth time, image is everything!

He also met comedian Jalang’o who has really pushed his music career and introduced him to industry big wigs such as Khaligraph Jones who featured on the remix of his single dubbed Kiboko.

Today, Masauti is one of the most-sought after musicians in Kenya but the truth is that it did not come easy. It took him a whole 5 years and a lot of metamorphosis. He is living proof that patience pays!

Masauti’s latest release ‘Ipepete’ is all about women shaking their thick rears (Video)

Fast-rising Kenyan singer Mohammed Ali Said, popularly known as Masauti, is back with another banger barely two months after he dropped Kiboko (Remix) featuring Khaligraph.

His new single dubbed Ipepete has been getting a lot of love on social media never mind the fact that it doesn’t have an official video yet.

Ipepete is a Swahili word that  translates to ‘blow it’. The deeper translation is ‘shake it’. It’s just what it is.

Anyway, Masauti’s latest release is a feel good song with a Coastal vibe. It’s about a woman shaking her derriere in different positions. If you were looking for a message, move on swiftly.

In the song he says, “We mama, ipepete ipepe ipepete ukiinama, ipepete ipepe ipepete ai we mama ipepete ipepe ipepete ukichutama.”

Of course, if you are keen, you’ll hear him singing about ‘mathwiti’ and ‘makeki’. That’s the highlight of this song.

The beat was produced by Motif Di Don who is arguably among the most-sought-after Kenyan music producers.

Challenge? Khaligraph Jones dares fans with a Cardi B collabo

Khaligraph Jones alleges he is working with Cardi B as he strikes at King Kaka just hours after his song debut with Cassidy with his new ¨Kovu challenge¨ to fans.

Papa Jones has been referring to himself as ¨Mr International¨ citing that his music is on another level, only out to make collabos with the International market.

According to him, the local music industry is not his place anymore.

Up on his ¨Kovu challenge¨, the Kenyan rapper dares fans who think King Kaka´s collabo with Cassidy is fly, because they haven´t seen his own storm coming.

Apparently, he reveals that he is up to do a collabo with Cardi B.

Khaligraph’s consistency is something other musicians should learn from

Khaligraph Jones is without a doubt the most paid artist in Kenya right now. Word has it that he pockets nothing less a cool 1 million bob per show. I honestly don’t know any other solo artist who can demand such an amount.

Unlike what most people think, Papa Jones was not an overnight success. His consistency and sheer determination got him to where he is today. Maybe you don’t know this but he is hardworking.

In a past interview, Khaligraph revealed that it took him more than 1200 songs before he became a household name. He never threw in the towel. He kept pushing until his efforts paid off.

Even after he became a household name, 28- year-old rapper continued to put in work. He even launched his own studio to avoid the hassle of setting appointments with producers. This is yet another gamble that yielded results.

For instance, If you are keen, you’ll notice that he has been on a roll since the year began. He has 6 releases, including the ones where he is featured, thus far.

The songs are; Gwala featuring Ycee, Beat It, Superman, Japo Kidogo where he worked with Otile Brown, Kiboko (Remix) which he did with Masauti, Megarider (Remix) where Nameless featured him. It’s almost as if he has a new release every month.

By the look of things, Khaligraph is not slowing down any time soon and this should serve as a wake up call to Kenyan musicians, especially the ones who are trying to break out.

If Khaligraph is not slowing down yet he is at the peak of his career, why should an upcoming artist release only two songs in a year and bask in the glory of their success?

His story is enough proof that consistency pays. Upcoming artists should borrow a leaf from him and keep pushing until the world pays homage to them.

Kenyan musicians have done so many collabos this year and we’re really impressed

Maybe you’ve noticed, maybe you haven’t but Kenyan musicians have dropped so many collabos since the year began. If you are a huge fan of local music, like yours truly, I’m you are also impressed.

For the first time in a long while, there’s something good to say about the local entertainment industry. We’re barely five months into the year and we’ve seen the most unexpected collabos. It’s such an exciting time to be alive.

Artist have not only realized the importance of doing collabos, they have also decided to step out of the comfort zones. On a light note, I’m pretty sure Kenyan musicians agreed that 2019 is the year of working together.

What I love most about this is that our artists are not only working with their fellow Kenyan musicians, they are also crossing borders and working with acts from Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana and Jamaica.

The likes of rapper Khaligraph Jones have featured on four great collabos since we crossed over into 2019. The songs are; Japo Kidogo, Kiboko (Remix), Megarider (Remix), and Chukua Selfie which was a campaign but still counts.

Papa Jones aslo featured Nigerian rapper Ycee on Gwala which was released in January this year.

If you’ve noticed, Naiboi is also doing a lot of collabos this year. He has two songs with Kristoff, a song with Brown Mauzo. He was featured on Chukua Selfie. His new song with Vivian and Savara dubbed came out a few hours ago.

Arrow Bwoy has also been breaking his back when it comes to music collabos. He has a song with Demarco, another one with Cecile. He has also worked with Gabu and Jovial

Other artists who’ve dropped good collabos this year are; Willy Paul, Timmy Tdat, Nyashinki, Jua Cali, Avril, King Kaka, Mr Seed, The Kansoul, Rankaddah, Rankaddah, Mayonde, Ochunglo Family, just to name a few.

To say the least, I am impressed. I can’t help but imagine how many more great collabos we’ll see before the year ends. I hope this also serves as a wake up call to artists who have been shying away from collabos.

Khaligraph has taken Kenyan music international with his latest release dubbed ‘Superman’ (Video)

Kenyan music is now international thanks to rapper alias Khaligraph Jones. Anyway, let’s be honest, Kenyan music crossed Africa’s borders a long time ago. All I mean is that his latest is release is a gamechanger. That’s all.

Papa Jones has been on a roll since the year began. If you are keen, you’ll notice that he has a new single, including songs in which he is featured, almost every three weeks.

Nameless recently featured him on the remix of Megarider. The song, which was released roughly three few weeks ago, has been getting massive airplay on local TV and radio stations.

Even before the dust settles, Khaligraph is back with yet another single. And no, we are not complaining. In fact, we couldn’t be any happier.

Yesterday, Khaligraph dropped his latest single dubbed Superman and belive you me, it’s a work of art. Just like wine, this 28-year-old rapper keeps getting better with time.

In the song, Khaligraph talks about his musical journey and how he became one of the biggest rappers in the game because of his sheer determination.

As expected, his rap flow was on point in the song. His lyrics were mostly in English so much so that if don’t know who Papa Jones is you would mistake it for a foreign song. Okay, I’m pushing it.

My favourite line in the song is “My passion for music drove me to the studio not of the money and hype, was dedicated and committed I made the microphone my honey and wife…”

The video which was directed by Jeff Adair was also on point. As it begins, there’s a flicker which hits the ground before Khaligraph emerges from a bush. Perhaps, this is meant to reinforce the fact that he’s a superman.

The beat, which was produced by Motif, was also superb.

Khaligraph should quit rap and become a singer

If I was Khaligraph Jones, I would be toying with the idea of ditching rap for singing, even if it’s just for a few years. Because, why not?

If you talk about Kenyan rappers, he is definitely one of the people who come to anyone’s mind. Well, this is simply because he one of the finest, if not the finest, rappers in East Africa.

After dominating the local rap scene for the last decade or so, I feel that it’s time for him to take up another challenge and that is venturing into singing on a full time basis. I’ll explain why.

Khaligraph showed us his mellow side in his last two collabos with Masauti and Otile Brown, especially the latter. The songs were different but in a good way. We loved them, at least most of us did. He proved to local music fans that he is much more than a rapper by singing in the two songs.

Both Kiboko (Remix) and Japo Kidogo have been getting good reviews so much so that Khaligraph joked that he had given other rappers Octopizzo time to shine as he does love songs and I feel that he should take up the challenge and do more of such songs for some time, say the rest of the year.

You see, we’ve gotten used his abrasive style of music. After all, isn’t he the OG? However, I feel that this should not necessarily be the case. Think of great artists like Donald Glover. He is one of the biggest names in America today because of his sheer versatility.

Khaligraph should follow in Donald’s footsteps or any other versatile artist that he admires. One thing is for sure, if he ventures into singing, his fan base would really grow since ‘soft’ songs have a wider appeal than rap. This is one of the reasons why Nigerian and Tanzanian music is big in Kenya.

Khaligraph’s collabo with Otile Brown dubbed ‘Japo Kidogo’ has been deleted from YouTube

Japo Kidogo, a song that was released by Otile Brown and Khaligraph Jones roughly three days ago is no longer on YouTube. It seems to have been deleted.

We noticed that it was not available on the video sharing platform yesterday evening. Maybe it was brought down much earlier.

Anyway, I would not sweat it, this seems to be an orchestrated move since Otile Brown brown and Khaligraph have also unfollowed each other on social media.

The video had been uploaded on Otile Brown’s page on March 25 around 5pm. The last time I checked, it was almost clocking 300,000 views and was trending at number one. Simply put, the song was doing well by Kenyan standards.

Maybe they expected it have more numbers in the first few days, when it didn’t, they decided to make it private (hide) it on YouTube so that when the song is back it’s even bigger. King Kaka pulled a similar stunt with Dundaing a few days after he released it.

When it comes to poorly executed or stunts, Otile Brown leads the pack right next to Bahati. It’s not the first time that his music video has mysteriously disappeared from YouTube.

This is actually the third time this is happening. His songs dubbed Mungu Wetu Sote and Chaguo La Moyo, in which he featured Sanaipei Tande, disappeared from YouTube only to resurface a few days later.
