Kenya seems to be just at the cusp of its very own MeToo movement if recent events unfolding withing the entertainment and specifically the comedic industry are anything to go by.

You see, the comedic scene is still grappling with the very recent and very raw passing of a comedian called Kasee and this galvanized Kenya’s top comedians to begin to speak out about the suffering they endure at the hands of the people who manage talent and in effect are the gate-keepers.

There are two names that have come up repeatedly over the past few days as the problem within the comedic space: Victor Ber and Avril’s baby daddy, Kenya’s very own Father Abraham, J Blessing. And this is the grassroots of Kenya’s MeToo movement.

You see, according to Kenyan comedians, these two go out of their way to frustrate them with regards to the Churchill Show. In Kenya, the comedic scene is rather nascent and the only avenue most comedians have convinced themselves that they need to get to in order to succeed is this one show.

This in effect has put a crazy amount of power in the hands of the few individuals who make decisions regarding the show: decisions such as who will appear on the aired show which means money.

The MeToo that has formed seems to be aimed at exposing the two aforementioned individuals but perhaps we can help grow it. The time is right seeing as how the spirit of revolution is in the air. Kenyans could actually turn their movement into something that weeds out the worst of the individuals in power.

The Kenyan MeToo could progress beyond just focusing on individuals who practice sexual impropriety and also focus on people who also humiliate their charges. And that would do far more good.

Why Kenyan comedy doesn’t translate well outside Kenya

Ofcourse, having learnt from the Western MeToo movement, it wouldn’t be enough to have a name and shame approach as evidence would have to be proffered against the accused but this could actually help the entertainment industry at large to clean house and get rid of the parasites.

Kenyan comedians need to stop placing the blame for everything on Churchill and his company. Why do I say this you ask? Well, because whenever anything terrible happens to a comic, the choral song of choice is that they are all because of Churchill or his company Laugh Industry in some capacity.

Kenyan comedians aren’t a mad lot so ofcourse there is some truth to the fact that some of the people or some of the situations that are toxic in the Kenyan comedians’ space are from Churchill’s company but that is because it is the biggest company in that space and field.

That said and noted, it is almost like Kenyan comedians are not willing to assess their situations and taking responsibility for them. This is actually indicative of a “woah is me” and “poor me” mentality. And the underlying problem here is one of both lack of vision and lack of an appetite for risk and success.

Kenyan comedians need to remember that Churchill wasn’t handed the perch he currently enjoys, he had to work for everything he got. When he started out, it wasn’t like he got anyone’s name or some uncle that introduced him to the right people. He started off by doing bit comedy on the Redykulas show.

From there, he built himself up by networking and leveraging his already existing body of work and then when he had finally created a platform for himself, he opened it up to Kenyan comedians who lacked similar vision. So whether or not he is a problematic individual to work with or he hires problematic people to work with, you cannot ignore the fact that Kenyan comedians have just refused to put in the work to build their own platforms.

When a comedian dies, it is unfortunate that the same song is sung: “These guys mistreat us” and we are treated to the choral performance of that award-winning song (not so award-winning) and then we wait for them to watch another of their ranks die before ululating and starting that well-worn song.

The smart play at this point is for Kenyan comedians to decide to come together, leverage any relationships they have, create their own companies and do their comedy there. Or alternatively, organize comedy specials like Vivianne’s husband Sam West does. The only limit to this happening is their willingness to actually take the initiative to make it happen.

Churchill Show comedian Terrence confess how smelly mouth kept his wife away from his passionate kisses

Terence Creative aka Kamami has revealed how having a foul mouth denied him passionate kisses from his wife.

The comedian, who also confessed before that he’s been a cigarettes addict, revealed that a stench from his mouth due to his smoking habit was the reason why his mouth smelled.

Terence stated that during the time, he can only remember kissing his wife, a record six times. The other times, he only settled for a peck. And this is a guy who smoked for almost a decade.

“The saddest thing that I have never said in the years that I dated my wife, we were together for like five years. We never kissed properly. There is a stench from people who smoke. I can remember we only kissed like six times hizo siku zingine nilikuwa najibamba tu wacha nilambe shingo. It was so bad. Alafu when I quit smoking I didn’t even tell her because alikuwa ananitusi oh ukiacha sigara nitakukiss kila siku. So nikawacha sigara nikanyamaza for one month nikamkumbusha,” said Terence Creative in an interview.

Kansiime to Kenyans: Stop sending me nudes or money on my number to bribe you way to EGT

Comedian Kansiime has asked Kenyans to at least be professional if they want to compete in the recently launched East Africa Got Talent edition where she’s a judge.

According to the Ugandan comedian, Kenyans have been sending queer things on the number such as nudes and Mpesa so that they can qualify.

First of all, Kansiime is married so don’t send her nudes. Also that’s not her Mpesa number so start work on reversing your money if you are among the mentioned.

“We have already done auditions in Mombasa Uganda, dare salaam and, Kigali. We want to usher in a new era of talent. We eliminated all excuses by allowing Kenyans to send us a one minute video via whatsapp.” she said. 

Adding:

“Please put on some clothes and stop sending us pictures and videos of your body parts. This is not my m-pesa number so do not send me money. All we want to see is your talent. Don’t look for me because I am just a host and nothing you will do for me will make you win. If you want to loose be friends with me because they will think you cheated.” she posted. 

 

 

Royal Media Services comedian wanted to kill his whole family before committing suicide

Royal Media Services comedian Okebiro O’mose wanted to kill his wife and brother before he committed suicide on Saturday. The comedian took his life during the weekend in his house at Imara Daima Estate, Nairobi.

Family members who spoke to Standard said that he had tried stabbing his wife and brother with a knife earlier on after an argument.

“He was armed with a knife and had become wild as he threatened to kill anyone in the house,” said Teresa Moraa, the widow.

Okebiro’s father said that if his wife had not ran away to their rural home, the comedian might have killed her too.

“I would be preparing to bury five people in my compound had it not been for the intuition of his wife and his brother, who had gone to negotiate for peace in the family,” said Mochere’s father Atandi Rabera yesterday.

Note

The family also revealed the suicide note from Okebiro that shared why he took his life away. The letter was aimed at his wife. The two had been having issues in their marriage for almost four years.

“I have been patient enough but you have been stressing me for nothing. Take those children and look for another father who is not immoral and who has never seduced any lady. Goodbye,” read the note.
