Governor Sakaja Faces Heavy Criticism Over Nairobi Floods

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is facing criticism for the city’s handling of recent floods caused by heavy rainfall. Senator Tabitha Mutinda, the vice-chair of the Senate Committee on Finance and Budget, accused the Governor’s office of incompetence, highlighting the devastating impact with over 15 lives lost in the capital.

Mutinda pointed a finger at a lack of organization within the county government, which has delayed access to crucial funding for flood mitigation. The national Financing Locally-Led Climate Action program (FLLOCA) funds haven’t reached Nairobi despite being allocated by the Senate.

“Nairobi hasn’t met the basic requirements,” explained Mutinda on Citizen TV’s Daybreak program. “They haven’t signed the agreement outlining the need for a dedicated climate or environment department, nor have they set up a special account to manage these funds.”

Mutinda contrasted Nairobi’s situation with other counties that have successfully received and utilized FLLOCA funds. When pressed on who was responsible for the delay within Nairobi, she placed the blame squarely on the executive branch, led by Governor Sakaja.

Adding to the criticism, Senator Mutinda pointed out the ineffectiveness of a 200 million Kenyan Shilling emergency fund allocated by the Nairobi County Assembly for the current financial year. She claims the funds haven’t been used properly to address flooding issues.

“The core problem is a lack of planning,” stated Mutinda. “We haven’t seen the emergency funds being used strategically to prevent or lessen the impact of floods.”

The ongoing heavy rains are expected to continue for a while.

Sakaja Limits CBD Trading For Hawkers

Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced a ban on hawking on Central Business District (CBD) pavements, sparking a potential showdown with hawkers.

Sakaja made the announcement during a meeting with hawkers at Charter Hall, saying the move is aimed at restoring dignity in Nairobi.

“There will be no hawking on the streets,” Sakaja said. “I am enforcing from Thursday even along the Bus station. I will not allow it.”

The governor said the ban would free up space on pavements for city residents to park their vehicles.

Sakaja also directed enforcement officers to enforce the ban fairly and without taking sides. He also ordered them to wear uniforms at all times while on duty.

The meeting was prompted by a recent incident in which a woman named Gloria Ntazola went viral for taking a Kanjo Askari (county enforcement officer) for a “ride to nowhere” after he allegedly entered her car without consent.

The Nairobi City County Inspectorate Act, 2017 outlines the mandate of the Kanjo Askari, including the do’s and don’ts.

Inspectorate officers in Nairobi are responsible for carrying out inspections to ensure that businesses and individuals comply with the county government’s standards and regulations. They also regulate and control traffic on county roads and maintain order in public places.

“The officers are supposed to regulate and control traffic on county roads and keep order and prevent obstructions in county public places,” the act reads.

Sakaja made the rule and stated that it would be implemented immediately.

Gidi Gidi unearths shocking documents belonging to Johnson Sakaja… Did he say he was Luhya?

Ethnicity plays a significant role in Kenyan politics; Jubilee candidate for Nairobi senatorial seat could have just lost the backing of Luhya community thanks to leaked documents.

VERY few Kenyans vote leaders based on competence and integrity, the voting pattern in the country is extensively influenced by ethnicity.

You should see the reactions of Kenyans when Radio Jambo’s Gidi Gidi shared confidential documents showing Johnson Sakaja’s Kalenjin surname ‘Koskei’.

Everybody thought Sakaja was Luhya until the dossier was dropped to claim otherwise; the leaked documents alleged to belong to Sakaja include a copy of his national identity card and copy of KRA pin checker.

The race for Nairobi Senatorial was well calculated to split Luhya votes between ODM’s Edwin Sifuna and Jubilee’s Johnson Sakaja. Now that Sakaja is allegedly not Luhya, will the voting pattern change?
