Joey Muthengi: I became depressed, suicidal after my first love, a white man, married

Former Citizen TV news presenter Joey Muthengi has disclosed that she became suicidal after a white man she was head-over-heels in love with married another woman.

In an interview with The Unwritten’s Yvonne Aoll, 33-year-old Muthengi confessed that she was in love with a white man while younger but felt like she needed to focus on her career first, a thing that later came to haunt her.

“The love of my life was a white man. I knew him since high school. We were perfect but the logistics around our lives just weren’t matching. We were always traveling on different time zones, different locations and I was so keen on climbing the career ladder,” said Joey.

Depressed

Joey later found out that the love of her life had moved on and was married a thing that pushed her to depression. Since then, she has remained single most of the time and is not interested in marriage.

“And when I finally got to Citizen TV, when I was finally feeling like ‘I’ve sort of ‘made it’, I started looking for him again and then I found out he got married… through Facebook of all the places,” said Joey.

Adding:

“I was quite depressed for a long time. Even my family couldn’t understand and kept asking ‘what is it about this guy?” Joey added.

Joey Muthengi lands new job with international media company after ditching Citizen TV

Weeks after news anchor Joey Muthengi left Citizen TV after allegedly falling out with them over her Betin advert, the former 10 over 10 news anchor has landed another job.

Muthengi, who has focused solely on promoting the company since then, has now landed another job at Voice of America (VoA) in US. 

“Joey, English to Africa Service, Voice of America has an urgent job request for you, please review on pay desk and accept or decline ASAP,” Joey posted an email detailing her new job. 

Where she started

She revealed that VOA was where she completed her first internship when she was in college. In 2001, the Voice of America launched a 24-hour FM frequency in Nairobi broadcasting from Washington DC via FM Station 107.5.VOA’s English to Africa Service provides multimedia news and information covering all of Africa.

While leaving Citizen TV on her last show, Joey didn’t drop hints on where she might be headed.

“For those asking where I am headed; I am going to the club tonight, I will take some time to relax and recuperate. I think I deserve that.” she said.

Joey Muthengi has addressed rumours surrounding her life with footballer McDonald Mariga yet again saying that people are just misquoting her.

Rumors of the two dating have been getting stronger to a point family members had to speak up and state that Mariga has a wedding soon and Joey should stop entertaining the side shows.

Speaking to Massawe Jappani on Radio Jambo, the former Citizen TV news anchor shared that she’s not moving to Italy as people have claimed.

”I only said that Mariga is a cool guy, I didn’t say we were dating! I am not moving to Italy I’ll be back there for work.

Single

She added that she’s not even willing to get married and shot down reports that she’s in a relationship with a top designer.

“I’m not getting married, that has never been something I wanted to do. I’m not even dating. I don’t think it’s for everyone, even my mother knows,” she revealed.

Former Citizen TV host Joey Muthengi has been entertaining Kenyans a lot lately who have been claiming she’s in a relationship with footballer McDonald Mariga.

She recently even shared that she plans to move to Italy to stay with Mariga after she resigned from Citizen TV.

“Mariga is a cool person and he and I are real friends. I am very fond of him. I will be moving to Italy in January and I guess time will tell what next,” she said when asked if they were an item.

Stop the jokes

Well, as much as Joey enjoys being called Mariga’s new girlfriend, Mariga’s relatives are not happy with her theatrics.

A family member of the football star has come out to vehemently deny that Joey Muthengi is in a relationship with the football darling and suggested she’s keeps off the rumours.

“I’m not sure why Joey has been lying to Kenyans and her fans,” said McDonald Mariga’s family member. 

The family member went on to add that Mariga has a wife and that’s why he hasn’t entertained the jokes like Muthengi has been doing.

“I can CATEGORICALLY state that they are NOT dating. He is a married guy! Have you noticed he has not said anything or commented on the story only Joey feeding lies to stay relevant after being fired. The guy would have claimed her by now,” the source added.

Meet the person who will replace Joey Muthengi after she ditched Citizen TV

Last week Joey Muthengi officially resigned at Citizen TV.

As Friday approaches, it seem Citizen TV is in a rush to find a replacement for the ever energetic, ratchet, Ezekiel-Mutua-angering 10 over 10 show that kids can’t imagine a Friday without.

Senior NTV anchor and associate producer Trevor Ombija, has just resigned from NTV and rumor has it he might be just the guy coming to take Joey’s spot.

Ombija is head to Royal Media after six years with NTV.

“Yes, it is true, I don’t know how it leaked and tomorrow is my last day at NTV. The media industry is changing and people change too. I have worked at NTV for over five years.” he told SDE. 

New Chapter

In the interview, Ombija didn’t really deny that he’s replacing Muthengi but said he’s excited about his new chapter.

“I would not want to use the word replace. You can never really replace anyone. Everyone brings their expertise and uniqueness,” said Ombija.

Joey after quitting Citizen TV:  I’ll soon be leaving for Italy to stay with Mariga

It’s official, Joey Muthengi is no longer part of the Citizen TV team after she handed her resignation last week.

Word on the street claims that the sexy presenter was paid a clean Ksh 8 million by Betin to endorse the betting firm, a reason why she decided to take the check despite Citizen’s management being against it.

Fans are still obsessed with her relationship with footballer Mariga and want her to date the man. She has insisted their relationship is very much professional.

Move to Italy

She recently spoke to Nairobian where she revealed she’ll continue working with the legendary footballer and is planning to move to Milan, Italy very soon.

“Mariga is a cool person. I am fond of him. I will be moving to Italy in January and I guess time will tell what next,” she told MondayBlues.

She added:

“I don’t know where this (relationship) will take us. Ask Mariga. But we will see what becomes of it. Unfortunately, I just felt that what I was going to do with life did not coincide with what Citizen TV had for me. Besides, I had a good time there and I will miss everyone, especially my fans,” she said.
