Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has been forced to explain why they invited Goldalyn Kakuya to speak to graduands.
Kenyans took issue with the varsity for inviting the KCPE top girl to the 12th graduation. Most people found it totally offensive that a class 8 girl was chosen to ‘advise’ university graduands.
She was invited to be rewarded for her exemplary performance
MMUST was forced to issue a statement following public outcry over Goldalyn Kakuya’s invitation to its graduation. The varsity says that Goldalyn was invited to the academic ceremony to be rewarded for her exemplary performance.
STATEMENT ON THE PRESENCE OF MS. GOLDALYN KAKUYA DURING THE 12TH GRADUATION CEREMONY.
The attention of the University has been drawn to erroneous information circulating on social media concerning the presence of Kenya’s best 2017 KCPE student, Ms. Goldalyn Kakuya, during the 12th Graduation Ceremony held at the Main campus on Friday, 15th December 2017.
We would like to clarify that Ms. Kakuya, a former student of St. Anne’s Junior School in Kakamega County, a school close to the University, was invited to the academic ceremony to be rewarded for her exemplary performance. She was not invited as the Chief Guest. She was, indeed, one of the thousands of enthusiastic guests who attended the colorful ceremony where 2891 well deserving graduands were conferred their various Degrees and awarded Diplomas and Certificates from the University of Choice.
We wish to farther clarify that the purported excerpt speech circulating in the media is not a true representation of her short remarks on that day. The correct status is that Ms. Kakuya congratulated the graduands, wished them well and observed the need to be ethical while pursuing different careers. A recording of her remarks is available.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is proud of Ms. Goldalyn Kakuya and supports hard work as a pillar for success, which is, in itself, an ever continuing journey. As an international University located in Kakamega County, Kenya, where Ms. Goldalyn Kakuya hails from, we recognize and reward effort and hard work and shall always continue doing so.
