Former actor OJ reveals why his wife dumped him and left with their son

Actor OJ had already established a name for himself back in the day when he was featured as the main star on TV show, Tahidi High. Back then, the fella was untouchable and thanks to his acting career; he managed to make his first million!

However speaking on his latest episode on YouTube, OJ went on to reveal how the world taught him the hard way; right after letting the idea of being a celebrity take over his head.

According to the fella, most his money was squandered on alcohol and smoking. With a million shillings at such a young age, this made it possible for the actor to enjoy life on the fast lane; something he still regrets till date.

I learnt alcoholism and smoking. I started smoking in Form 2 and in Form 3, I started taking alcohol. From chang’aa to anything I would get along. The habit has affected me years down the line. I’m turning 35 years but I have been hiding from the mess. I made my first million, but what did I do with it? Nothing,”

Regrets after the fall

According to OJ at the time he was making this money; he had no idea what to do with it – a silly decision he continues to regret till date.

Do you ever look at your friends and get jealous of their growth, especially when you look at where you are and how focused they were back then?

His former Tahidi High co stars i.e Abel Mutua have however invested wisely and currently run a production company with Phil the director.

I didn’t invest well because of bad habits, which till today hit me. I got to a point I fell into depression. I could cover it with alcohol, humour and cigarettes.

He went on to add;

The celebrity mentality got into my head. I was a big name and the fame left as fast as it came. After the show ended, I started to wonder why the people who were calling me for jobs were not looking for me anymore,

And lastly…right after making some good money; the former actor says he decided to settle down but unfortunately his marriage did not last for long. This is because his wife walked out on him after realizing that he had a problem with alcoholism.

OJ comes clean on his drinking habit: I have never been an alcoholic but sometimes I over do it

A lot has been said about actor Dennis Mugo aka OJ’s love for the bottle.

In the past, he has issued mini-statements regarding this trying to save his image and probably career.  The actor recently appeared on K24 and yet again denied that he’s an alcoholic, a reason why he was dropped from Citizen TV program Tahidi High.

He however confessed that he loved drinking and sometimes overdid it.

“I have never been an alcoholic in term of dependency on alcohol but there are times I have overdone it. But it has never gotten to a point of going to rehab or having cops involved,” he explained.

Comeback

He said that leaving Tahidi High was bound to happen in one way or another because it needed younger characters. He later made a comeback on the show as a teacher.

“The story about leaving Tahidi was based on the realism of the show, it had to be maintained. We had been in the show for over 6 years. It was a phasing out of the old class that had Abel Mutua, Philip Karanja and Sarah Hassan. We started as 2nd-year students and when we were leaving Eddy already had two kids…it was time. There is no way Eddy is telling guys that he is in form 4 and he has two kids outside the show. The believability of the show kinda shakes.”

Shish: Overcoming Tahidi’s image was hard and it almost ruined my career

Actress Shirleen Wangari has come out to narrate how getting a role at Tahidi High was a gift and still a curse later on. According to the actress who went by the name Shish in the program, she fought hard to re-brand herself after ditching the show.

“It was hard because I played the role of Shish for so long, people began to believe that was the only role I could play, that I could only play the bad girl role and nothing else.” she said in an interview with Nairobi.

“It reached a point that i stopped going for some auditions, but thankfully i was able to get a role in international films that were being shot in Kenya at the time because they were not familiar with my role as shish. It took a lot of work but finally, people in the industry began to see that i was a versatile actor.”

Her first role

Wangari also narrated how she, together with Melody Mercy, Jolene and Sarah Hassan landed their first acting roles in the program.

“I got the role straight out of Mary Hill Girls High School. I loved the experience, I not only got a platform where I could grow as an actress, but it also gave me a great platform to build my brand. I also got to make lots of friends and networks in the industry.”
