Boodocks Gang’s Maddox featured on ‘Tingisha Remix’ alongside Vet3ran, Scarface and Finch Money (Video)

Edu Maddox, who is one third of Rieng’ hitmakers Boondock Gang, has been featured by Vet3ran on Tingisha Remix alongside Scarface, Finch Money and Wisk and it’s getting a lot of love from their fans.

Also read: Stop looking for content from new-age musicians!

If you thought the original version of Tingisha was something then you’ve not seen anything yet because the remix is totally fire and no, I’m not exaggerating.

One of the many things that I love about new-age artists is their sheer creativity. Although they sound the same, you will agree with me that each of them has a unique musical approach. I honestly don’t know if this makes any sense.

Vet3ran, Wisk E and Finch Money

I really love this jam. Other than the fact that it sounds so pleasant to the ears, the content notwithstanding, it has so many dope rhymes that will have you hooked from the moment you hit the play button.

As expected, Maddox really came through. His ability to play around with words is unmatched as such I am not even surprised that they gave him the first verse.

Vet3ran’s verse also caught my attention. Yo! His flow is impeccable. Believe you me, if this chap continues to release songs then it won’t take long before the whole country knows his name.

Notably, the chorus on this track is also dope and so is the beat. They instantly get you in a good mood and if you are one person who likes to dance believe you me, you won’t resist the urge.

There’s not much that I can say about the video since most Gengetone artists use the same format of a shoddy video and some vixens twerking here and there but I feel it works for this jam.

Boondocks Gang begin 2020 on a high note with new jam ‘Modo Man’ featuring Mbuzi Gang (Video)

Boondocks Gang – a group that is made up of Ex Ray, Odi Wa Murang’a and Maddox – has began the new year with a bang after teaming up with Mbuzi Gang on a new jam.

Also read: Stop looking for content from new-age musicians!

Dubbed Modo Man, the song is about a certain chap who has unique abilities so much so that all the ladies are head over heels for him.

This jam is really dope. As you listen to it, you can’t help but love the wordplay and rhymes that these youngsters are dropping in the song. They make it look so easy!

Boondocks Gang
Boondocks Gang

The chorus by Ex Ray is so catchy and you just want to keep listening to it. It’s very likely that you will master it after listening to this song twice or maybe thrice because it just flows.

As expected, Odi Wa Murang’a and Edu Maddox also did a good job. Their rhymes in this jam are so on point and at some point you’ll just have to rewind their parts because it sounds so good to the ears.

Notably, Mbuzi Gang also impressed me and I wish I had known about them earlier. I tried searching for other songs by them but my efforts bore no fruit. Anyway, that’s a story for another day.

Mbuzi Gang is really dope. Although I don’t know his name, I must say that I really loved the first verse which was by one of them. His rhymes are out of this world and is it just me or does he sound like Odi Wa Murang’a?

Odi Wa Murang'a
Odi Wa Murang’a

The beat on this jam is also impeccable. Apart from the fact that it blends well with the flow of these youngsters, you will agree with me that it gives off a FOMO vibe.

One of the things that I loved about the video was the vixens who were featured in it, they can really shake it! To add to that, the editing was also flawless.

Boondocks Gang’s new collabo with Dezian titled ‘Katika’ is a banger (Video)

Rieng’ hitmakers Boondocks Gang have dropped a new song with Dezian Tyrone and it slaps really hard ladies and gentlemen.

The song titled Katika, which means ‘to dance or get down’, has been getting massive airplay on local TV and radio stations since it came out a few days ago.

I really love this jam. The lyricism on it is so dope, some of the verses will leave you scratching your head as you try to figure out what the artist meant.

Dezian Tyrone
Dezian Tyrone

I feel ashamed to say this but the truth is that I am just discovering this Dezian’s music but as they say, it is better late than never. Notably, he really did justice to that hook. His verse was also on point.

As expected, Boondocks Gang also came through on this jam. Of course, I really loved Odi Wa Muranga’s verse. At this point, I believe it more to do with his deep voice than his lyrics. I just don’t know.

The beat on this track is also sick. I am not really surprised seeing as it was produced by the one and only Sadafa. He did a great job.

Watch Katika below and tell us what you think.

Kenyan musicians have so much to learn from their Tanzanian counterparts

I’m not a fan of Bongo music. I only listen to Tanzanian songs when I have to, for instance when I am doing a review or when they are randomly played at a club, party or in a matatu.

Also read: Why it’s hard for artists to be consistent

On the flip side, I admire so many Tanzanian artists not for any other reason but because they really work their asses off. I could list them but their names would take up all this space. So, I’ll save you the agony.

WCB arists
WCB artists

Bongo music has always been big deal  not only in Tanzania but across the continent and it’s bout time we – or rather our artists – borrowed a leaf from them.

They should ask themselves questions like,”What can we learn from Tanzanian musicians?”, “What areas should we work on?” and “What are they doing differently?”

One of the Bongo artists that I really admire, just like most of you is Diamond Platnumz. Despite being accomplished and all, he has never been content with his success. He keeps pushing each and every day.

Since the year begun he has released more than 30 songs, perhaps more, including collabos. As a result, he is always at the top of people’s minds.

Khaligraph Jones
Khaligraph Jones

It always seems like he is a pacesetter for the Tanzanian music industry since most people – including his stablemates – like Rayvanny, Lava Lava, Mbosso and Queen Darleen want to keep up with him.

The local music industry lacks a someone who keeps artists on their toes as is the case with Tanzania and this means that very few musicians, if any, give a hoot about consistency.

The truth is that people get bored very fast. I doubt if any of the people who are reading this article can have a jam in their playlists for more than a week and this means that artists need to release more music. There is no other way.

Many of you will be quick to point out that new age artists such as; Sailors Gang, Boondocks Gang, Ochunglo Family, 34 GVNG, Gwaash, etc. are constantly releasing music but let’s be honest, that is not serious music.

Nadia Mukami
Nadia Mukami

In as much as we find the songs by these youngins catchy, they rarely transcend our borders. It’s what it is. To add to that, the quality is always wanting.

I’m talking about the likes of Nyashinski, Nadia Mukami, Octopizzo, Khaligraph, King Kaka, Redsan, Nameless, Jua Cali, Avril etc. Will they ever wake up from their deep slumber? If so, when? Enough said.

Boondocks Gang has teamed up with Joefes and Iphoolish on ‘Vuvuzela’ and it’s a massive hit (Video)

Boondocks Gang, a group that is made up of Ex Ray, Odi Wa Murang’a and Edu Maddox, has teamed up with Joefes and Iphoolish on a new jam and we are really feeling it.

Also read: Stop looking for content from new-age musicians!

The song dubbed Vuvuzela epitomizes the growth of the trio since they made their debut on the local entertainment scene with Rieng in December 2018.

Odi Wa Murang'a
Odi Wa Murang’a

As you listen to this jam, you realize how the group has matured musically over the last few months. Their wordplay, rhymes, punchlines and general flow have really improved since we first came to know about them.

One of the people who really impressed me in this jam is of course Odi Wa Murang’a. His verse begins in Kikuyu and I think that the main reason why I love it never mind the fact that I don’t even understand the language.

Notably, the hook by Ex Ray is also catchy easy to master. Trust me, you’ll just find yourself singing along to the song because it’s so lit.

I also loved Joefes’ verse. I’m actually ashamed to say that I dismissed him the day I first heard a song by him. Had I known he was this talented, maybe I would have been easy on him.

Joefes
Joefes

The beat for this jam is dope. As you are listening to it, a picture of people getting down to it comes to your head and that simply means that it’s a club banger.

Listen to Vuvuzela below and tell us what you think.

‘Wabebe’ hitmakers 34 GVNG have teamed up with Ex Ray and Dmore on ‘Ka Ni Mtam’ and we love it (Video)

34 GVNG (Good Vibes No Guns), the group that treated us to the hit dubbed Wabebe alongside Gwaash, is back with a new jam featuring Ex Ray from Boondocks Gang and Dmore who is one third of Ochunglo Family.

The song dubbed Ka Ni Mtam simply talks about what you should do when she is too sweet. Actually, I feel ashamed writing about this but it is what it is.

I love this jam. If you chose to ignore the raunchiness and focus on the lyrics you’ll realize that it’s such a masterpiece – the creativity in it is unmatched.

Dmore
Dmore

I don’r really know who it is but I suspect that it must be Vuva on the first verse. This guy aced it. From the wordplay to the witty rhymes to the punchlines, everything was really on point.

Of course, Dmore also came through. For this lad, you can never really tell whether he is a dope lyricist or it’s how he expresses himself. Anyway, the bottom line is that he is good.

Notably, Ex Ray also did a good job. His verse was too lit. It goes like, ‘ka ni mtam nampatia za ma dumbolela, ka ni chura niko dianga ma zangalewa na zikishika zifike bana kamelewa, muchiri si unapenda masiri…”

The beat which was produced by the one and only Hitman Kaht was also impeccable. It keeps you hooked from the moment you hit the play button. Props to him.

Odi Wa Murang’a has linked up with Raj, Ashmaley and Babito on ‘Dhugudha’ and it’s too lit (Video)

Talented Kenyan singer Odi Wa Murang’a, who is one third of Rieng hitmakers Boondocks Gang, has released a new project with Raj, Babito Mlynchez and Ashmaley and it’s getting a lot of love.

The song dubbed Dhugudha, which is a Sheng’ word that means derriere, has been getting a lot of airplay on local TV and radio stations since it was released a few days ago.

Odi Wa Murang'a
Odi Wa Murang’a

I don’t know about you but this song made me appreciate Gengetone even more because it’s so damn catchy. It is the kind of songs that leaves you wondering why you weren’t born a musician.

The lyricism on this jam is really dope. Other than Odi Wa Murang’a and Raj – who we all know are talented – I must say that I was impressed by Babito. This lad has some dope flow. If you ask me, I’ll tell you that he totally nailed it.

As expected, Odi Wa Murang’a also did a good job. Apart from his witty rhymes, this guy has a deep voice that makes you hooked to his verse.

Raj Kenya
Raj Kenya

If you know me, then you know that I am such a huge fan of Rajiv Okemwa, better known as Raj. In my eyes he can’t do wrong so we’ll give him a pass.

The beat for this jam, which was produced by Sadafa, was also dope. I was literally dancing on the seat while writing this review. Props to him.

Watch Dhugudha below and tell us what you think.

King Kaka has dropped a sizzling hot collabo with Odi Wa Murang’a titled ‘Nataka’ (Video)

Award-winning Kenyan rapper and singer Kennedy Ombima, better known as King Kaka, has released a new collabo with Odi Wa Murang’a who is one third of Rieng hitmakers Boondocks Gang and we really love it.

The song dubbed Nataka, which is a Swahili word that means I want, has been receiving massive airplay on local TV and radio stations since it was released a few days ago.

Odi Wa Murang'a
Odi Wa Murang’a

The was a time when I that it was wrong for new-age artists to collabo with their peers who have been in the game for long and I have to admit that I was wrong because this jam slaps so hard.

Who would have thought King Kaka and Odi Wa Murang’a would one day drop a collabo and that it would sound this nice? I bet no one did.

Nataka is party anthem. It talks about people who refuse to leave the club until they black out and have to be carried home.

There are many reasons why I love this song, the fist is because the lyricism by King Kaka and Odi Wa Murang’a is so dope and you just want to keep listening to it.

King Kaka
King Kaka

The second reason is beat. You see, it is not everyday that we hear a reggae beat on such a club banger and it actually sounds so nice. Props to the producer who is none other than Ilogos Music.

The video was also on point. Trey Juelz did a good job in bringing what they were singing about i.e the party scene to life.

Watch Nataka below and tell us what you think.

Boondocks Gang’s Ex Ray has dropped a collabo with Kriticos dubbed ‘One Plus One’ and we love it (Video)

Ex Ray, who’s one third of Rieng hitmakers Boondocks Gang, has just released a new jam 23-year-old Belgium-based rapper and singer Kriticos Mwansa and we love it.

Also read: Stop looking for content from new-age musicians!

The jam titled One Plus One talks about that one person that you need to complete you and live your life to the fullest in this world. I guess you know what I am talking about.

I really love this jam. I’ve listened to it a couple of times since it was released and I’m yet to get tired of it. I might just have it on replay for the rest of the year, which is about five weeks.

Kriticos Mwansa
Kriticos Mwansa

Ex Ray really came through on this song. His verse is totally dope, especially punchlines. However, I must admit that I felt stupid singing along to him since he’s talking about things like, a for apple, b for boy c for car etc…

Kriticos also nailed it. Although it was my first time listening to a jam by him, I was not disappointed at all. This chap has a unique voice and it really gave life to the hook.

The beat and instrumentation on this song is also on point. As you listen to this it, you will not resist the urge to bust a few moves. Trust me.

Although the video concept was simple, it came out really well. The shoot location i.e. The Nairobi Railways Museum was also a good pick. Props to Trey Juelz.

“Masterpice ni hypocrite” Boondocks Gang throws shade to Willy Paul and other gospel artists

Gospel singers have always been called fake and pretenders many times in Kenya.

Many have always believed that they lack the true test to become real Christians and are just in music for the money and fame.

Boondocks Gang, which is made up of Mr Mukuruweng, Xray (Utaniua) and Odi wa Murang’a (Mr ThoboThobo), has also joined this tune and released bashed gospel artists for being fake. They gave an example of Masterpiece saying he’s just after kiki and not praising God.

“Masterpiece, huyo msee munasema sijjui Masterpice ni hypocrite. Hawa wasee unaweza patana naye kwa club. Hawa wasee wako mtaani waukata mbaya sana. Wanakupima tuhapa hivi. Kazi ni kupimanisha tu watu,” the said.

Fame

They further added that artists like Willy Paul are true pretenders and don’t focus on anything other than just getting people’s attention.

“Mara juzi juzi Willy Paul ameimba Lamba Nyonyo hapa halafu akam kutuimbia ngoma ingine hapo utamskiza aje?,” he posted.

Boondocks Gang’s Ex Ray has teamed up with Kawangware Kings on ‘Raru’ and it slaps hard (Video)

Ex Ray, who is one half of Rieng hitmakers Boondocks Gang, has a new jam alongside Kawangware Kings and we are so in love with it. Like, really!

Also read: New-age musicians are giving established artists nightmares!

The song titled Raru, which is a Sheng’ word that means ‘tear apart’, has been receiving a lot of airplay on local radio and TV stations since it was released.

Although, it was my first time listening to a jam Kawangware Kings, a group that is made up of Lyn Clint and Kennah Craizy, I wasn’t disappointed at all. Actually, I felt  bad that I discovered them late.

Kawangware Kings
Kawangware Kings

I was particularly impressed with Lyn Clint’s flow. The chap really nailed it in this song and he’s the reason I went to look for other songs by the group, shock on me when I discovered that the have been around for a minute.

His verse on this jam is dope. It goes like, “K.Kings and Boondocks one time, leta rieng twende nayo one time, cheki rieng ana bubble one time, kila time nikuparty one time, Kawangware represented one time, namada hii track juu ki kinanice, leo ni lazima zitararu, cheki vile ngokos wanabanju, hapo clabu watu watapata tabu, we ni babu bila kanzu na manyaru, niko mbanyu na mamamu, cheki manyu wana hamu ya mkwaju…”

As expected, Ex Ray also nailed it. His verse on this jam was too lit. There’s also something about his voice that you’ll immediately know it’s him on a song, even without a video.

The beat for this jam is also on point. As you listen to it, you can visualize people busting moves to it and that’s not a bad thing or is it?

Watch Raru below and tell us what you think.

Femi One has teamed up with Boondocks Gang, Mbithi and DJ Lyta on ‘Nyoko Nyoko’ and it’s too lit (Video)

Kenya femcee Femi One is back with a new song almost two months after she released Moto and we are really feeling it ladies and gentlemen.

Also read: Fena Gitu Vs Wangechi Vs Femi One: Who is the best female rapper?

The song titled Nyoko Nyoko is a collabo with Odi Wa Muranga and Ex Ray, who are both from Boondocks Gang, as well as Mbithi The Kamba Boy and DJ Lyta.

I don’t really know what nyoko nyoko means but it’s provocative. Anyway, I’m kidding, it means mother but its often used as an abuse. In this this song, it’s more of the latter.

Femi One
Femi One

But we really don’t care because this is a party anthem. If you are looking for content, then I would advice you to look elsewhere.

I love this jam not for any other reason but because the delivery by all the artists i.e. Femi One, Odi Wa Murang’a, Ex Ray and Mbithi The Kamba Boy was really on point. They really had some dope verses.

However, if I had to choose one then I’d go for Femi One, as you would  easily expect, followed by Odi Wa Murang’a, they are the business.

Of course, Ex Ray’s verse also stands out because of his rhymes, that will definitely make you scratch your head, and unique voice, so does Mbithi The Kamba Boy’s verse.

Ex Ray and Odi Wa Murang'a
Ex Ray and Odi Wa Murang’a

The beat fir this jam was produced by the one and only Ilogos Music and I really love it. However, I feel some people will say it’s too slow because it’s not like most of the Gengetone beats that we’ve gotten used to.

The only thing that didn’t really amaze me is the video, I felt like it was too cliche. Most Gengetone songs are shot on the streets. That notwithstanding, Johnson Kyallo did a good job, especially during the editing.

Established Kenyan artists should not stoop too low

New-age artists have taken over so much so that established artists i.e. those who have been in the game for 5 years or longer are almost unheard of since they barely get airplay on TV and/or radio stations.

Also read: New-age musicians should not do collabos with established artists, here’s why

In a bid to remain relevant in the local entertainment industry, some established artists have been doing collabos with the new crop of local artists. However, this has not sat well with many people.

A good example is Jua Cali who has been the talk of the town in the past one week after word went round that he was working on a song with Swat Mtoto Wa Eunice and Odi Wa Murang’a.

Odi Wa Murang'a
Odi Wa Murang’a

Whichever way you look at it, the legendary musician has stooped to low by working with the two. Those who have always held him in high regard, including yours truly, have lost respect for him.

Granted, the new Kenyan sound is hot on the streets and in clubs at the moment but I never though we’d see Jua Cali, of all people joining, the bandwagon.

Think of it though, what will you think of the Kiasi hit maker if you heard him singing things like Lamba Lolo, Wamlambez and Punyeto? Would you still admire him?

Jua Cali with Odi Wa Murang'a and Swat Mtoto Wa Eunice
Jua Cali with Odi Wa Murang’a and Swat Mtoto Wa Eunice

For someone who has had a career spanning two decades, you would expect that he has learnt the ropes and will stay afloat in the industry come what may but that seems not to be the case.

To be honest, I’m on of the people who is really waiting for his collabo with Odi Wa Murang’a and Swat Mtoto Wa Eunice to drop because I want to see how far he is willing to go to reclaim his fan base.

The argument that he is trying to ‘lift’ the two is invalid because anything that they touch turns into gold instantly. As such, Jua Cali might be the one who’s in need of ‘lifting’.

Boondocks Gang has teamed up with Quanchy on ‘Fimbo’ and we love it (Video)

Boondocks Gang – the group that became a household name in Kenya after releasing Rieng – is back with a new joint alongside an upcoming singer who is known as Quanchy.

Also read: Boondocks Gang is the future of Kenyan music

The song dubbed Fimbo and I’m sure you know what it’s all about unless you are too young which makes me wonder why you are reading this article in the first place.

Anyway, the song opens up with Ex Ray and as you would easily expect, he really brought his A-game. His wordplay and rhymes were really on point. They will leave you scratching your head.

Boondocks Gang
Boondocks Gang

For instance, the part where he says, “Msupa ako tire amenyanya na cookie, kumba mshudhe arushe mkuki ashikwe na nyege atoke mkuki…”

Ladies and gentlemen if this is not greatness then I really don’t know what is. I really don’t.

Odi Wa Murang’a also came through on this jam. Apart from his rhymes, there’s just something about his voice that makes you want to listen to him over and over. Quanchy also did well.

To add to that, the beat was also dope. The hook sticks in your head the first time you listen to the song, “Fimbo hadi upate kidumbo*3.”

I would rate this song at 8/10 but that’s just me. Maybe you feel it deserves better. Listen to Fimbo below and tell us what you think.

Odi Wa Murang’a Vs Ex Ray: Who’s the dopest lyricist in Boondocks Gang?

I’m sure most of you are fans of Boondocks Gang – the group that burst into the limelight after releasing the song dubbed Rieng’ or Peleka Na Rieng’ if you like.

Also read: Boondocks Gang is the future of Kenyan music

In the last few months, the trio i.e. Odi Wa Murang’a, Ex Ray and Edu Maddox, has become such a huge deal that some of the group members have even landed collabos with leading local acts.

That notwithstanding, music fans still love to compare them against each other and more often than not Ex Ray is pitted against Odi Wa Murang’a, or is that not the case?

Odi Wa Murang'a
Odi Wa Murang’a

Some argue that Odi Wa Murang’a, who is known for witty lines such as siwezi mwaga nje hii si maji ya mbosho is the illest of the three.

Others on the other hand claim that Ex Ray whose popular line is ninajiaminia nina nguvu bila njugu is the supremo.

As such, we want you, our dear readers to settle this matter once and for all by telling us who you think is the dopest lyricist between Odi Wa Murang’a and Ex Ray. Leave a comment below.

Meanwhile, you can listen to their latest release dubbed Mboko Haram below. Enjoy!

Boondocks Gang is the future of Kenyan music

I’m always awed by Boondocks Gang, the group that treated us to Rieng, because they are so creative. You agree, don’t you?

Also read: Stop looking for content from new-age musicians!

The group that is composed of; Odi Wa Murang’a (Kid Furnace), Edu Maddox and Ex Ray is without the future of Kenyan music, if they tone down their vulgarity.

Within a very short time, Boondocks Gang, has moved from an unknown group to one of the most most popular groups in the country.

Just like other new-age artists, they are really aggressive. They are fighting for a space in a very competitive industry an as such they’ve had to set themselves apart.

Boondocks Gang
Boondocks Gang

Apart from releasing a number of solo projects since 2019 begun, the group has also sought collabos with some of the leading artists in the country.

Some of the people they have worked with this year are; Willis Raburu, Kristoff, KRG The Don, DJ Lyta, Gwaash, Rankaddah, VDJ Jones, just to name a few.

These collabos have played a big part in expanding their fan base and as a result, their name has really grown. I just hope  that thy will keep the momentum.

Listen to their latest collabo with Krg The Don dubbed Mathogothanio below.

New-age musicians should not do collabos with established artists, here’s why

In my opinion, the new crop of Kenyan musicians should avoid working with artists who have been in the game for a longer period than they have. Instead, they should release more projects with their fellow new-age artists and push the new sound.

Also read: Stop looking for content from new-age musicians!

I’m sure many established artists are dying to do collabos with the likes of Boondocks Gang, Ethic, Zzero Sufuri, Ochunglo Family, Sailors Gang, Gwaash etc., because they are hot on the streets at the moment.

Zzero Sufuri

I, however, feel that they should not work with them, at least not just yet because it’s too soon and they should first grow their names and fan bases before they consider doing collabos with people who have been in the industry for many years.

Secondly, the new Kenyan sound will be diluted if they start doing collabos with established artists left, right and center. Truth is that the two groups have different approaches to music and as soon as they start working together, the older folks are likely to influence the youngins.

As a result, new-age artists will lose their rawness, for lack of a better word and be drawn to sensible music. On the other hand, established artists might also be influenced by the youngins and maybe, just maybe they will also start releasing Wamlambez-like songs and we don’ t want that or do we?

Boondocks Gang Chura
Boondocks Gang

Granted, the new-age artists stand to gain a lot by working with their older peers but at what cost? Who bears the brunt? The way I see it, this is their time and they should maintain the unique identity of the new Kenyan sound by working with each other.

The new Kenyan sound might not last for so long

Sometimes, I’m worried that the new Kenyan sound is just a wave i.e. it will not last for a long time, say 5 or 10 years. I can bet on this.

Also read: Stop looking for content from new-age musicians!

You see, Kenyans are very peculiar people. The might really be into something today but won’t want to hear about it tomorrow. Put simply, we live in the moment.

The way I see it, it’s only a matter of time before we outgrow the kind of music that’s popular in the country right now.

Ochunglo Family
Ochunglo Family

Truth is, what the new crop of Kenyan musicians are singing about is not any different from what Nonini was doing in the early 2000s but is he relevant today?

Now that they have everyone’s attention, new-age musicians sit down and should look for ways of sustaining the hype because let’s be honest, it will eventually die.

Look at it like this, if someone shouts “Wamlambez” next year will you reply or stare at them as if they are crazy? I think the latter is right.

Better still, will you still be listening to the likes of Lamba Lolo, Pekejeng, Rieng etc.?

Established artists who were phased out by the new age musicians are also not sitting pretty, I’m sure they are also looking for ways of reclaiming their fan bases.

Boondocks Gang
Boondocks Gang

I’m not saying that new-age musicians should make more sensible music, far from it. All I know is that they need to act quick! Enough said.

Stop looking for content from new-age musicians!

Every so often, you’ll hear someone rubbishing the new crop of local musicians and explaining that they lack content.

Also read: New-age musicians have killed Nigerian music and that’s a huge win

I always find this line of thought interesting because I’ve never seen or heard any of the new-age musicians asking people to listen to the songs that they churn out because they have content.

You and I know that these songs are purely for entertainment, they are meant to put you in a good mood.

As such, it would be wrong to claim that Kenyan music lacks content because most of the popular songs in the country are from new-age artists.

Ethic Figa
Ethic

The truth is that there is no shortage of good music in Kenya. If you are the kind of person who looks for a message in a song, then you’ll be spoilt for choice.

If, for instance, the new Kenyan sound does not appeal to you then you can listen to the likes of Sarabi who make conscious music.

Better still, you can identify another genre that you easily resonate with and let those of us who enjoy the new Kenyan sound be.

We have come far as a country, musically speaking, and we have the new-age artists to thank for the strides that we’ve made.

Gone are the days when local clubs, radio and TV stations would play one Nigerian song after the other and in my opinion that’s a huge win.

Boondocks Gang
Boondocks Gang

The focus has really shifted to local musicians, especially the new-age artists so much so that you could say that they helped in killing Nigerian music.

So, instead of castigating them every chance you get, support them!

Rieng’ hitmakers Boondocks Gang have dropped another jam ‘Mboko Haram’ and it’s too lit (Video)

Boondocks Gang, the super-talented group that is made up of Ex Ray, Kid Furnace (Odi Wa Murang’a) and Edu Maddox, is back with another massive hit and we can’t stop jamming to it!

The song dubbed Mboko Haram, which is a corruption of Boko Haram, is all about the male genitalia yaani chuma (I kind of felt ashamed while writing this bu it is what it is ladies and gentlemen).

For the umpteenth time, if you are the kind of person who likes to focus on what they are singing about and not the wordplay then this Gengetone is not for you grandpa.

The group, which is also known as Genge La Bundoksi, really came through with some dope rhymes on this jam. Their creativity is totally out of this world.

Boondocks Gang Chura
Boondocks Gang

Just like most people, I felt that Odi Wa Murang’a totally killed it on Mboko Haram.

There’s a part where he says, “Nishai vuta mbichwa nikaspinchi wagethomo, na mi si fala, najua nini hukaa kamoshono, ka singekuwa rapper ningekuwa refa wa ngono, unaendaje round moja, kunywa supu ya konokono.”

If this is not creativity then I don’t know what is, I really don’t.

The song was produced by the super-talented Sadafah and directed by Vikta Daniel. To say the least, they both did a commendable job, don’t you think so?

Side note: I don’t think they needed DJ Shiti and Kartelo to make this song viral. In my honest opinion, they serve no purpose at all! Come fight me!

Listen to Mboko Haram below and tell us what you think.

New-age musicians are giving established artists nightmares!

If at all there are people who are not so pleased with the emergence of new-age musicians then it’s the local acts who have been in the game for a longer period, say 5, 10 years or more. I won’t mention any names because you know them too well, don’t you?

Ethic

In my opinion, they have been backed into a corner by the new crop of artists and they don’t have a clue how they can get out of it. Put simply, they don’t know what to do to reclaim their fan bases. As such, some of them are left with no choice but to hate.

New-age musicians are very spontaneous unlike established artists. A random idea is turned into a song and they hit the studio to record it. Before you know it, the video (quality notwithstanding) is out and is getting mad love across the country.

Established artists like to think through all their steps because they feel they have been in the game for long, they know what works. In the end, they released a well-executed song/video but no one bothers to listen to it or watch it. They end up getting only a handful views.

New-age musicians are always on their toes. As soon as they release a song, they are back in studio working on the next hit unlike established artists who will wait for a song to marinate for some months. Before you know it, they have dropped another banger!

Truth be told, these youngins are giving established artists sleepless nights. In other words, they are their biggest nightmare. Imagine trying to keep up with someone who has been in the game for less than a year compared to the many decades that you’ve been doing music. I would also feel horrible!

However, I don’t think all is lost. All established artists need to do is see what they can learn from the new crop of Kenyan musicians if at all they want to survive in this industry because let’s be honest, times have changed so why should they stick to old practices?

You can’t resist the new-age music revolution!

There’s a time when I didn’t think much of the new crop of Kenyan musicians. It was around the time Ethic debuted on the local entertainment scene with Lamba Lolo. I thought the song was trashy at best.

Ethic Figa
Ethic

Just like most people, I was quick to dismiss them with them with the excuse that their music was raunchy and lacked any message whatsoever nevermind the fact that I found it a little bit entertaining.

With time, more groups or individuals whose music approach was similar to that of Ethic started emerging and I started warming up to the idea of listening to thier music afterall, most people were praising them.

There is a popular adage that if you can’t beat them, join them and in my opinion that’s exactly what happened to me and it’s not that I was coerced, I came to understand their style and as a result, my love for their music grew.

I moved from being a firece critic of new-age musicians one of their strongest proponents, if not the strongest. Chances are if you meet me along the streets, I’ll ask you if you’ve listened to the latest song by Ethic, Ochunglo Family, Sailors Gang, Boondocks Gang, Rico Gang etc. It’s just what it is.

I came to realize that you can’t really resist the ‘new-age music revolution’, as such, you need to embrace it because wishing them away won’t make the players any less popular. Truth is, they will still get massive airplay on local radio and TV stations even if you hate them so why not have a change of heart like I did?

New-age musicians are emerging each day, it almost seems like a revolution, one that will define the Kenyan sound for decades to come. I can only hope that their music will get less raunchy or provocative as time goes. Otherwise, they are the best thing that has ever happened to Kenya.

New-age musicians have killed Nigerian music and that’s a huge win

If you are keen, I’m sure you’ve noticed that Nigerian music is not as popular in Kenya as was the case a few years ago.

Gone are the days when local clubs, radio and TV stations would play one Nigerian song after the other and in my opinion that’s a huge win.

The focus has really shifted to local musicians, especially the new-age artist so much so that you could say that they helped in killing Nigerian music.

You see, the game really changed the day “Lamba Lolo” hitmakers Ethic appeared on the music scene more than one year ago.

In as much as the song was vulgar, many Kenyans couldn’t help but appreciate the fact that their style was different. It was out of the norm.

To add to that, it was very appealing and danceable (is this even a word?). Put simply, it was the kind of music that you could bump in the club.

Sooner or later, more individuals or groups  whose style was similar to Ethic emerged and before we knew it, most local clubs, radio and TV stations were playing their music back to back.

What I love most about the Kenyan music revolution is that the new-age artists are restless which means that unlike their predecessors, they are always in studio. As such, they are releasing hits back to back!

Kudos to Sailors Gang, Boondocks Gang, Ethic, Ochunglo Family, Rico Gang, Fat Boy Gwash, Zzero Sufuri etc.

I can only hope that one day we’ll get rid of Tanzanian music like we did with Nigerian music!

Rico Gang has teamed up with Kartelo on a new banger dubbed ‘Kimonyoski’ and we love it (Video)

Rico Gang, the group that is famed for songs such as F*ck Boy and Chachisha, is back with a brand new banger that we can’t get enough of.

The group, which is made up of Triand Rands, Gray Cee and Harry Craze, has featured popular comedian Kartelo in their new jam titled Kimonyoski.

Kimonyoski is a sheng word which means a group of people who like to have fun i.e. partying and whatnot.

Kartelo

If you are a fan of Kartelo then you’ve probably heard him saying ‘mbogi ya kimonyoski’. It’s part of his signature greeting.

He often says, “Oya oya oya eeh mimi unaweza niita Kartelo ama unaweza niita kwako, mbogi ni kimonyoski hitilafu sacco inna di area representing.”

Rico Gang’s new banger is based on Kartelo’s greeting but I have to say that the execution was above par. Of course, they added some words to spice up.

I was really impressed by the lyrical flow and the worldplay in the song. However, I have to admit that Gray Cee’s part really stood out. There’s just something about this lass that makes you want to listen to her over and over.

The beat by Waka Waka was also on point. Although the producer isn’t quite known, I think people should keep an eye on him.

Watch Kimonyoski below and tell us what you think. You might need your earphones for this!

Gwaash will soon take over the Kenyan music industry

To be honest, the first time I listened to Gwaash on Wabebe I didn’t think he was all that but with time I came to appreciate his music approach.

Just like any other artist, he keeps improving with every subsequent release and it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a household name.

I was astounded when I checked out his YouTube channel. I realized that he has been doing music from 2017 or thereabout.

Unlike what many people think, Gwaash had a couple of songs before Sponyo and Wabebe went viral in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Gwaash Kalongo
Gwaash

If you listen to his older songs, you’ll also agree that he has really grown. Back in the day, he was more of a trapper but he discovered Gengetone somewhere along the way and he’s been acing it since.

To date, my favourite songs by him or the ones where he has featured are Katambe, Aluta and of course Always say.

If you choose to ignore the raunchiness of the words in the songs and focus on the rhymes and wordplay, you’ll realize that Gwaash is talented, you might even feel like he’s way ahead of his time.

I wasn’t too surprised that he had been picked as one of the artists that will perform at Koroga Festival because he actually has it in him. Keep an eye out for Fat Boy Gwaash!

Watch his latest collabo with Boondocks Gang dubbed Kalongo.

Gwaash and Boondocks Gang have teamed up on a new fire banger dubbed ‘Kalongo’ (Video)

Boondocks Gang, or Genge La Bundoksi if you like, has teamed up with Gwaash on a new jam and we are really feeling it.

I’m probably dancing as I write this and you can’t even blame me. I mean, how can you?

When you talk about Kenya’s new-age musicians, you can’t fail to mention Boondocks Gang, who are known for their mega hit Rieng, and Gwash – who became a household name after releasing Wabebe.

As such, you know what to expect when you hear that the two are on one jam! Its smoooooking!!! (read this in Jeff Koinange’s voice).

The new jam dubbed Kalongo has been trending since it was released a few days ago. So far, it has garnered 95,000 views on YouTube and the comments section is a hot mess as you would expect.

Kalongo is a childhood game where people would pretend that they have a functional family i.e. dad, mum and the children. Kids would even cook!

Does that jog your mind? Well, the new collabo between Boondocks Gang and Gwaash borrows heavily from that.  However, they disorted the childhood game and I’d rather not talk about that.

Both Boondocks Gang and Gwaash really came through with some impressive word flow. However, I was particularly impressed by Odi Wa Murang’a. This young man has some good flow. Where is the lie?

Boondocks Gang Chura

The song’s chorus, which was done by Ex Ray, is very simple but catchy. It goes like, “Hiyo story cha baba, cha mama si hawa mangeus wanapenda kalongo, cha baba, cha mama, si hawa watoi wanapenda kalongo.”

The beat, which was produced by the one and only Mashakurah, is also impressive. It slaps hard! Where is the lie?

The song was directed by Qvisuals. Watch Kalongo below and tell us what you think.
