Obama Responds to Daughter Malia Dropping His Last Name

Former U.S. President Barack Obama has finally responded to the news that his eldest daughter, Malia, whom he shares with human rights advocate, author, and actress Michelle Obama, has opted to drop her famous last name.

As a politician turned author and voice-over artist, Obama mentioned that he understands why the 26-year-old creative would prefer a stage name rather than carrying her father’s well-known surname into professional spaces.

‘I’m so angry at Barack’ Why Michele Obama hated her Kenyan visit

Earlier this year, in February, Malia made headlines at the Sundance Film Festival, where she premiered her film *The Heart* using only her first and middle names, Malia Ann, for her directorial credit.

During a recent appearance on the “Pivot” podcast, Obama shared his thoughts on Malia’s decision, admitting it didn’t come as a big surprise. However, he did caution her, jokingly reminding the budding filmmaker that dropping her last name wouldn’t fully obscure her connection to her high-profile family.

“Her first film went to Sundance and all these prestigious festivals, and she didn’t use Obama in the credits,” Obama laughed. “I told her, ‘You know they’ll still know who you are.’”

Obama explained that Malia’s intention was for audiences to view her work, *The Heart*, without any preconceptions tied to the Obama name. “And she was like, ‘I want them to watch it without any association.’” He added proudly that both of his daughters strive to build their paths independently of their family’s influence.

He continued, “Our daughters consciously avoid leveraging their status. They’re very independent, and even offering help is challenging. They’re quite firm on this.”

Obama also noted that his daughters have grown more averse to media attention, saying, “As they’ve gotten older, the paparazzi stuff really bothers them because they’re not seeking that spotlight. They’re grounded.”

The former president and Michelle Obama share two daughters: Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23.

‘I’m so angry at Barack’ Why Michele Obama hated her Kenyan visit

This year, First lady Michelle Obama was enjoying Beyonce and Jay Z’ performance in France while her husband Barack Obama visited his home and family in Kenya, Bondo.

The former American First lady Michelle Obama has now opened up on a possible reason why she did not accompany her husband Barrack Obama during his two recent visits to Kenya saying that her first visit in the country was just more than frustrating.

White sneakers

In her memoir titled “Becoming”, Michelle shared that on her first trip to Kenya in 1992 was full of misfortunes and even wore the wrong shoes. Obama’s sister, Auma, also had an old car that left her frustrated.

“Auma’s sky-blue VW was so old that it often needed to be pushed in order to get the engine into gear. I’d ill-advisedly bought new white sneakers to wear on the trip, and within a day, after all the pushing we did, they’d turned reddish brown, stained with the cinnamon-hued dust of Nairobi,” she shared.

The 54-year-old who was born the US in 1964 added that the trip was also tiring and although she witnessed some beautiful scenaries, she was really frustrated.

“For every bit of awe we felt in Kenya, we were also tired, which led to quibbling, which led finally, for whatever reason, to rage. “I’m so angry at Barack,” I wrote in my journal. “I don’t think we have anything in common.” My thoughts trailed off there. As a measure of my frustration, I drew a long emphatic gash across the rest of the page,” the memoir went on.” she said.

Obama in trouble! Moses Kuria, Wetangula and Boni Khalwale launch scathing attacks on former US president

Barack Obama’s recent trip to Kenya as a retired US President has not been without controversy. Several politicians are displeased by Obama for doing too little for Kenyans.

Former Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale was the first politician to fire shots at Obama accusing him of deliberately refusing to bring development in the country of his father’s birth.

“Dear BarackObama, I believe u have landed safely in South Africa, and hope that this finds u well. With tremendous respect Sir, can u tell us why while u were in the most powerful office (of the world’s biggest economy) u refused to bring development to ua home, Kenya?” Boni Khalwale tweeted.

Kuria adds fuel to the fire

Moses Kuria also faulted the former US President claiming he disrespected local leaders by subjecting them to security  screening in Kogelo. Kuria also claims Obama’s sister Auma Obama disrespected Luo leaders forcing Luo kingpin Raila Odinga to skip the event in Kogelo.

“Lakini Africans especially Kenyans are a weird lot. Barack Obama was President of the United States for 8 years. The most powerful person on earth, with unfettered access to the awesome American ecoomy and the nuclear codes. He did practically NOTHING for Kogelo, Kenya or Africa. Nothing! Zero! Today as a Eunuch former President he visits Kenya, we close all the roads for him. He then proceeds to Kogelo, body-searches host Governor Cornel Rasanga and reduces my good friend and Lupita Nyongo’s daddy into a spectator. The skinny kid with a funny name then delivers a 7 minute hollow speech with a curtain raiser from his sister Auma who sets the stage by giving a scathing and condescending indictment of Luo Nyanza leaders. No wonder Baba Raila Odinga skipped the event, rightly so. Meanwhile the Chicago benefactor goes on to open a US $ 200K obscure centre for God knows what. The guy found Bill Clinton’s Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) in place. The same was expanded by President George Howard Walker Bush . Obama did nothing, absolutely ZERO to expand AGOA. Today he launches a US $ 2OOK whatever in Kogelo. Nani alituroga??” Wrote Moses Kuria on Facebook.

Weta can’t agree more

Bungoma senator Moses Wetangula also called out Barack Obama for doing little for his people. Weta called on Obama to encourage the US government to engage Kenya in areas of development.

“We want to say that Obama’s continued engagement with Kenya is something that we cherish and appreciate because it gives the country the necessary positive visibility, but we also wish he did much more for Kenya when he was president of the most powerful country and he did not. We hope that all is not lost and that you will continue to encourage your compatriots and your government to engage Kenya in every aspect of development particular in areas of tourism and trade,” said Moses Wetangula while to journalists in Bungoma County on Tuesday 17th July.
