Sonko shares photos to prove he has dealt with hawkers who were invading the CBD (Photos)

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has finally heard the cries of Nairobians. City dwellers have been protesting hawker infestation of the Central Business District (CBD).

Nairobi CBD used to look like an extension of Gikomba market just a few days ago. Sonko allowed hawkers to operate within the CBD from 2pm.

Nairobians took to social media to protest about the CBD being reduced one big open-air market. Sonko has since decided to deal with hawker menace in the CBD.

Sonko plans to acquire KPCU building

The governor says he has comprehensive plans to ensure hawkers; interest are taken care. Sonko reveals that plans are also underway to acquire KPCU building and transform it into a hawkers’ market.

“My administration has a comprehensive plan to ensure hawkers’ interests are taken care of. As a long-term measure, my administration has identified Mwariro Market to be transformed into a hawkers’ market.
Plans are also underway to acquire KPCU building and transform it into a hawkers’ market as well,” wrote Sonko.

Hawkers relocated

Sonko says hawkers will no longer obstruct people and businesses. The governor explains that hawkers have been relocated to designated streets in the city.

“For the time being, my administration is working on means and ways that will ensure a progressive and humane relocation of hawkers to designated streets and lanes where they can freely do their businesses without obstructing other people as well as other business owners.”
